A bit smaller than the usual Wetherspoons so seemed crowded. OK but there are better pubs in Thirsk.

Visited a few weeks back mid afternoon. There was a porter I had my eye on at the bar, but sadly it was unavailable so I went for Porter by the Hop Studio instead, at only £1.85. I realised I have had this at another Spoons where I was not impressed, but it was delicious here so can only assume it was past its best at the other pub.
Unfortunately, a few minutes into my pint, a few rough looking mums came in with their primary age brats. They chose to sit near me. I tolerated a few minutes and then changed tables to a different section of the pub. I was not the first person to do so. Like some kind of curse the kids ran around the entire pub so there was no real escape, but at least I could no longer hear them banging on the xylophone from where I was sat. I have no issue with kids in pubs but keep them under control, or at least feign some kind of attempt at supervising them!

Just like the Golden Fleece , Wetherspoon's Three Tuns is an imposing double fronted hotel positioned in the corner of Market Place.
This was the last pub we visited and as we were staying here for the night it made sense to end the evening here. The internal layout is a little strange, 2 large rooms either side of the grand entrance with it's high ceiling and staircase to the hotel part. The long bar is positioned to your left beneath a low ceiling giving it a slightly claustrophobic feel. Beyond the bar and behind the staircase is a long seating and dining area leading to a patio garden and smoking area. Off of this long room are 3 little snugs again for diners, these are really nice little areas.
Now to the ales, the 7 hand pumps had 6 ales, I chose a pint of Nick Stafford's Yorkshire Session Bitter @ 3.8%, a decent well kept ale.
Not much atmosphere here on my visit, I find the layout slightly odd as mentioned.
However the building is lovely and of course being a 'spoons the food and drink is cheaper than other local establishments.

All 6 handpumps with beer clips were displayed when we walked in but on asking for the 2 most interesting beers the manager said they were unavailable. He said this was company policy. I find this difficult to comprehend. Why raise expectations only to be told the product is unavailable? weatherspoons have been doing this foe years. Perhaps try Little 3 down the road

This was my first venture into a Wetherspoons that is also a hotel. On entering the large staircase straight ahead is prominent (but roped off) and the bar area can be found to the left. Of the 6 hand pumps, 5 were available and I opted for a "Woild Moild" from Wolf Brewery, at 4.8%. At £1.99 you can't knock the value for money factor.
The "Woild Moild" is not the darkest of milds - I would describe it as being a dark red rather than the brown / almost black that many are. Would definitely recommend it - something a bit different.
No issue with service on my Friday afternoon visit. The place was starting to fill up but was not what you would describe as majorly busy. There is plenty of seating split across various smaller rooms. There also appeared to be an outdoors area to the rear, though I did not investigate this so not sure if it is a beer garden or just a smoking area.
Definitely worth a visit for the selection of real ales and the value for money.

I was there this week and there were six ales available - I had the Everards Gallantry @ 4.8% and it was in very good condition. Ambience of the place was good as well - cost me �1.70 a pint with my CAMRA 'sell-your-soul-to-the-devil' voucher...can't argue with that...

While agreeing with the other reviews that this is an interesting conversion of an old building, the beer choice has gradually deteriorated. On one recent visit 3 of the six handpumps were out of action due to "line cleaning" although pump clips remained in place. Yesterday there were 2 5% beers as well as the usual Abbot & Ruddles. Guest was Tetley bitter. The previous local beers such as those from York & Hambleton have disappeared. For a better local choice visit the Crown & Anchor in Sowerby.

This is a loverly well converted place, with lots of character. Used to be very expensive and run down before being taken by wetherspoons. Made into one of there lodge type inns. So you can stay the night if you wish! Nice beer garden at rear, little step down areas especially for candlelit eating or drinking, large bar with good choice of real ales, all of which are very good. Staff friendly, one of them even showed us round the place!
Toilets very good and very clean. Seating is comfortable and not too crowded together. Can get very busy on race days. Recommended.

Can't understand why other reviewrs have scored this pub so low.
The inside's pleasant enough, the (only) beer we had was excellent and at least you don't have to drink John Pith's. The barman seemed surpirsed that I wanted a FULL pint though (as opposed to 1/2" short).
5pm on a Saturday race day so it had all sorts in, most had had a few but no problems. OK, a few of the usual Wetherspoons scrotes but that's par for the course in JD's, and I've always had impression that Thirsk's a bit rough pub-wise anyway.
Would certainly go again.

above average Wetherspoons in a sympathetically converted famous old hotel. Many features of the hotel are retained especially at the front of the building. Usual varied choice of beers on keg and handpump including a couple from local brewers and kept in top form. Short staffed of course but those few employed are very efficient, tables cleared quickly and I personally saw someone buy a drink in less than four minutes.
