Where you go because the One Eyed Rat isn't open. Has ale but not as we know it.

GK house with standard GK range of beers which were well kept and served. Still has a friendly local pub feel despite obvious food leanings. Good stop off on way to the One Eyed Rat. Oh, and as that short walk takes you past one of the best fish and chip shops in England I didn't try the food.

Called into the Golden Lion for a pint with my partner while visiting Ripon. What a great pint. The food looked really good so we decided to stay for lunch. I had the homemade pie, chips and peas and my partner had the giant homemade yorkshire pudding with sausage, roast potatoes and onion gravy, I must say it was the best pub food I have had for a longtime, Homemade chips what were lovely, The pie was just how my granny used to make, The yorkie looked and tasted fantastic and both meals for just 10, a bargin. The staff were lovely they even tempted us with puddings, I had homemade cheesecake, beautiful. What a treat to find such great pub.

Visited this pub on the strength of the reviews, especially of the homemade chips which some people had raved about. Not sure if the chef has changed since 2010 but the chips were awful - like thin-cut oven chips, overcooked to within an inch of their life and were swimming in gravy. The food reminded me of motorway service station food - tasteless and overpriced! I ordered cumberland sausage which came with the chips and frozen peas and was definitely not worth the 8.95 I paid for it. My partner had the pie which also came with said chips and peas and that was 9.95. Very overpriced for a town centre pub and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for food and won't be returning.

Nice friendly boozer, food looked good all though we didn't try any. worth calling in for a couple of pints.

Lovely town pub with good food and excellent chips.

We eat at the Golden Lion several times a month and have enjoyed every meal we have had there. They serve large portions and serve homemade chips which are scrummy. It is a really friendly pub, the staff are always helpful. The beer is good too. The sticky toffee pudding is the best I have ever had - would have no hesitation in recommending the Golden Lion.

On average, we eat at the Golden Lion 2-3 times a month. As far as Pub food goes. you will find no better. If you want something quickgo to the chippy or get a Big Mac, the food at the Lion is lovingly cooked to order and is well worth waiting for and why not try Sunday lunch at the Lion, it is To die for
The price is very fair, when you think how much work and effort is put into what you are getting. Whilst you are waiting for your meal, there are several Real Ales for you to try as well as all the normal drinks you would expect to find.
This is a nice friendly pub, the staff are great, why not try it.you wont be disappointed.

called in for a meal on way home from work, good value for money, food homemade and you get real chips, what more does a girl want! it was nicely presented and tasted good too, the pub was clean and had a nice atmosphere will be calling back soon

My comment here is based only on the food: probably the worst I have ever eaten. I had things on my plate that I didn't recognise; were they animal, vegetable or mineral? I had to ask for a knife to cut my pudding it was so overcooked. Maybe it has improved since then?

Long white washed pub situated between two chip shops near the old workhouse. A large single bar with several distinct areas where walls have been removed. Certainly not a gastro-pub or restaurant as such but the emphasis is towards food. Pedestrian choice of beer, Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen, Theakstons Best and Black Sheep bitter, all competently kept, normal fizzys are also available. Bland decor, not much atmosphere, a Little Chef of a pub.
