First time here for many years. Superb (very) historical inn. 4 ales on, Ringwood best, Spitfire , Hogs Back HBB, and the excellent Dark Star Hophead which was on good form. Very pleasant staff. They do lunch snacks and main meals. We had soup and loads of tasty bread. We look forward to more frequent visits.

This is a really old pub with a fascinating history. Four real ales in good condition. Menu is quite large and prices moderate to quite high. Service quick and good. Cooking was excellent. I was with over a dozen other people and all were happy. And some of us are quite capable to moaning and complaining. We had a very enjoyable time and want to go back.

called in yesterday 4 ales on,was surprised to see a larkins brew cant remember the name but it went down very well.
|
4 ales on yesterday, doombar, black sheep bitter, pride and i think it was called hip hop, good service good ale.
|
the current owner- manager is rarely to be seen and We believe the place would benefit from a more hands on approach. The food is very good quality but the service very variable indeed. Also ,where dishes are advertised for a minimum of 2 persons such as a whole duck or chateau Briand they are very small portions and very, very expensive.

good visit.....would use again
|
Really enjoyed my visit and would definitely return if I was in the area again. The food is very good - gastropub prices but doesn't disappoint at all. They had 3 ales on when I was there and they obviously change them round regularly - 2 were changed during the time of my visit alone! The service was very friendly and, last but not least, the building is just incredible and justifies a visit on its own.

on our way to littlehampton, yesterday afternoon, only had coffee and a bottle of magners(so not relly beerinthemorning) but very pleasent service with big smiles..and my mother in law(she who will be obeyed)said what a very nice place lets go for lunch one day,so we will...rating given 6/10,may improve after next visit, whan we try the ale.

not a patch on the swan, but o.k for a light lunch. great building and decor.
|
Good beer and food, but you pay for it!! Pleasant interior with eclectic selection of furniture, but can get quite busy. Great open fireplace, and if you are really lucky you might bag the seat next to it on a cold evening.
|
Very good food. Service a bit charmless but ok. Something about the main bar doesn't quite work - it's a hotel after all. Public bar (Half Crown) is much more like a pub. Can't believe people come on here moaning about the prices - can anyone imagine how much it costs to restore and maintain a Grade I Listed 14th Century building?

Visited this hotel/pub on 9 October 2009 whilst staying in Petworth. We thought it was very beautiful and well presented. Folk in this area of the country are spoiled and so probably think it is just ok, but, as we are from Cornwall, we thought it was a little bit special as we don't have anything remotely like it in Cornwall. We had sandwiches which were delicious and the wine was good quality. OK, it wasn't cheap, but you have to pay for quality. There was a wedding taking place in the church opposite which was nice to watch while eating. The only drawback is the busy main road which it is situated on, but it wasn't really noticeable once inside.

Called in on the way back from Petworth this afternoon....perfectly pleasant place, tastefully decorated. According to the sign outside on the Green, it dates to circa 1250AD, so has stood the test of time well. I had a Pint of Fullers Summer Ale, and my sister had a Pinto f Sharps Doom Bar. Both in excellent condition, however nearly fainted when these two drinks, coupled with two bags of Walkers Crisps came to 8.10!!!! For the Pub, ambience, quality of Beer, I'll give it 8/10. For the Prices that they charge, unfortunately a 2/10, so overall, only 6/10. Note to Owners: Those prices are extortionate for Real Ale....and the highest that I have paid anywhere in the Country this year! You need to look at it urgently!!

Great choice of real ales on. A good stop of place. Didn't try the food but hey the beer is everything isn't it. The beer was from a Sussex brewery and sadly I cannot remember the name of it. Must be fairly new I guess. Excellent pint....4.2% but tasted like Summer Lightning. Great interior...you can imagine the old coaches still pulling up at The Inn.

Over priced Hotel... not your average place to stop off for a quick pint and cheesey chips on the way home from a busy day at the office this reminds me of the Spread Eagle in Midhurst, over priced and full yuppies, nice place tho.
|
Got to say that...I like it!
I spend a lot of time in the Godalming and surrounding areas (familly thing) and had never ventured to The Crown, having heard that it was a gastro-pub. Went into, I think, the Half Crown, and was pleasantly surprised. Nice little chat with the Landlord (Dan I think) and the Manager (Marcus) who were both very pleasant.
Butcombe was a little difficult to finish, but overall I thought it was great. Definately be back to try the food.

Had Sunday lunch here at the weekend. Pub itself is magnificent - a cracking building with comfy chairs, great furniture, proper towels in the loos - all very smart. Beer choice was excellent. I had a great pint of TEA and companions had pints of two different Cornish ales - both excellent. We were disappointed with the food though. It is pricey, which we expected in this area, but it just wasn't all that good. The meat was fine - my pork had a pathetic amount of crackling though which i was gutted about. The Roast spuds were just horrid though - very old and rubbery. Others had fishcakes, which were very average. Lovely building, great beer but food needs to be better in this county of gastropubs

I can't comment on what it used to be like as I've never been in there before, but I'd certainly recomend it now. There's a good lounge area where you can eat a bar snack or drink, with a real log fire which was kept well stoked. Plus a nice looking panelled restaurant and a proper pub bar area with a couple of screens showing sport and a darts board. Pretty much something for everyone, plus the staff were very friendly, it's a great 600 year old pub with bags of character and the food was very nice too.

We have now been reopened for nearly six months and have hopefully buried the disasters of the past. We welcome reviews from beer in the evening members and hope that you will enjoy our extensive variety of beers - Pride, Butcombe, Ringwood and special Guests. Large choice of wines and our all fresh traditional a la carte menu. Please do tell us what you think of the new Crown!

Re-opened last night. Totally refurbished, even the terrace. Good selection of ales and lagers. Too busy to get a real feel of how it will become but I believe there is a close link with the pub/bar restaurant around the corner.
|
Apparently reopening tomorrow. Lots of money being spent. Looks like the Kevin & Ray era is completely forgotten
|
Thankfully this place has now been closed down after the last tenants went bust. Hopefully it'll re-open under new management in due course. Whoever they turn out to be they can't do a worse job than the last lot.

I think it's called receivership Beersupper...spooky eh!

Spooky goings on here with the spirits not of the ghostly types either. Nudge Nudge

Hasn't been a Badger pub for years. Has a variety of guest beers, mainly Horsham and Arundel brewries. Good pricing! Is the 'locals' pub at present.

Went to this pub today to see a complete refurb with re upholstered chairs and a new layout. It looks great. It was busy and the sevice was great, food was good, beer was good. Everyone had a great time and will be returning. The owner took the time to show me around the hotel and explain the history. A delightful afternoon. Recommended

At first we were pleasantly surprised - nice beer, good value, etc, then one of the locals who left his cigarettes in the pool room (we were playing pool at the time), for some reason thought he had left a lighter with them. Every local in the place then thought that we were that desperate that we stole this chap's lighter.... a bit sad, the atmosphere changed after that and when we walked out they all glared at us.. we thought it was all quite funny :-)

Fine old building that manages to balance the hotel/restaurant/pub equation very well. Very reasonable drinks prices, lovely surroundings. Recommended.

I visited this pub for the first time last night, and was very impressed by both the decor, ambience and efficiency of staff. What a thrilling place!! I will definately be going back.
The menu looked superb, and the food that was going past me looked delightful. Very reasonable prices for the food and beer as well!
A lovely place, steeped in history, what more can i say!

The management at present have got it about right. Food very good and the locals bar is just where it should be. Well done, keep it up x x

Having never been to this pub before, I feel as if I have just stumbled upon a real find! I certainly can't agree with any of the earlier reviews, but this must be something to do with the new owners. Firstly, the pub is beautiful and being near xmas, was beautifully decorated and very homely with the open fire roaring in the main bar. A group of us went to eat and between us we had a mixture of the a la carte and the set menus - all the food was superb and the service was first class. The pub itself has a very welcoming atmosphere and there is no stuffiness about the dining area at all. There is even a seperate bar at the back of the pub where there is a big screen for football etc and pool tables, all away from the main bar, so as not to disturb those wanting a peaceful drink...I am so pleased I've found this pub, so I'm going to be recommending it to many people - a perfect place for a Saturday night or Sunday lunch and a drink!

I visited a couple of weeks ago to grab a sneaky bite of lunch and the food and service was great. We were warned beforehand by locals that it wasn't very good and was pretty grotty inside but under new owners it looks simply stunning inside and I really couldn't fault it. The new menus look great, and the cheese menu alone is enough to tempt me back for a proper meal. Plus it appears to sell real beer, which is a bonus.
I'll report back in due course....

I was really surprised at the previous comments. After years of "thinking about it" because we had heard awful stories of Christmas Day meals, we decided to eat out last year and chose the Crown. We were totally pleased with the meal, the service and the ambience, to the extent that we said we would never cook Christmas lunch again! We're there for Boxing Day this year - but only because my husband is working on Christmas Day. The only slight disappointment was that they had no Babycham (the first time I have asked for it in 35 years!) Actually, I don't think I would have got Babycham in any pub!!
Perhaps the fact that the other comments were posted anonymously implies that they are still actually using the Crown? All the best! Carol Richardson

A lovely looking pub, but we found the bar food very dissapointing.

This is the oldest pub in the village. Queen Elizabeth stopped here on her way to the coast. Huge 16th century inglenook fireplace. Friendly but The Swan down the road has much better food.
