user reviews of Golden Lion, Whitby

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's a small, friendly cosy place, and I'd say the better of the cluster in the immediate locality.

Unfortunately it was a bit too crowded to stay when we called, but I'd give it another go at a quieter time.

Small 2 room pub just at the bottom of a steep hill opposite the swing bridge.

My 3rd pub in Whitby to do and after 3 it was sitting in 3rd place! Nice old fashioned decor however on my lunch time visit it was very quiet, with just a couple of local blokes in. As we were leaving a large group of fellas came in and filled the small room at the front.

3 ales on cask, these were Wells Bombardier, Black Sheep Best Bitter and Golden Sheep. The Golden Sheep I had was very well kept and poured.

Worth a tick but not the best pub here in my opinion.

This was over favourite watering hole in town. Good selection of ales, although I was on the lagers so didn't sample. Vy friendly welcome and the communal seating arrangement facilitates a good bit of banter with strangers! Would definitely go back.

Quirky, characterful old pub.
Good beer on hand pumps, friendly staff.
Nice surprise just off the harbour side.

Visited this pub on the last day of the Whitby regatta and when I walked in the pub was full of geordies all pixxed.... not a good sign. A small but lovely pub the beer (Skipton Copper Dragon) was actually quite decent and well kept...

When some of the geordies left the pub the landlady sprayed air freshener all over and made everyones beer flat.... she replaced them though which I thought was a great touch... overall I quite liked this pub..... it had a friendly atmoshphere but when its packed its packed.... the beer was well maintained...
oh and not all geordies smell either !!

Not my lucky day - 1st 2 ales were off and no apologies - just a grumble about fussy southerners! My 'Yorkshire' father in law put the bloke straight agreeing with me on this one. I visited because of the high rating this pub had. I notice now (too late) that the reviews were rather old! Not a happy visit.

I agree with "postie", we called in on a Sunday afternoon when there were only three other patrons but as there were eight of us that wasn't a problem.

Good beer in a cosy room on a chilly afternoon. Great

What a great little pub, only two rooms but full of character very cosy, old photos on the wall good real ale and others, toilets outside but don't be put off, I called on a busy Sunday but not many people in, its a shame as its a little gem.

The quiet little corner bar can be an oasis from the crowds outside. The Black Sheep was quite drinkable - a noce cosy spot.

Very cosy little place, but not a great deal of atmosphere when we went - maybe the TV had something to do with it.

Had Tetley's Imperial, which is class (along with the MILD), which leaves me wondering why these two beers, with some taste, are shunted aside for the pretty tastless cask and smooth. There is no Imperial just 20 miles down the road at Scarborough and the last Tetley Mild i saw was in the Harrows in Wolverhampton

The eradication of Tetley MILD in North Yorks is surely the worst decision since JFK said 'lets take the convertable, i need the air'.

Back to the pub - happy enough to go again, but not at the level rated by the first scorer for me.
