The Black Dog was our third Grantham pub on Saturday following the Avenue Hotel and the Nobody Inn. The latter was easily the best pub in the town, but is not listed on the site. The Black Dog is a Marstons pub with only their ales available - Marstons Pedigree & Speeding Mallard, Wychwood Hobgoblin & Mansfield Cask Ale. There are a number of different areas you can choose to sit in. Live football scores were being shown in one area and live rugby in another. They were preparing for that evening's England v Wales game with banners and flags. So it is clearly a popular pub for sports viewers.

Soulless Marston's chain pub -the Mansfield ale was like 70s keg. Kind of disappoining, though what should I expect from the town that gave us the original mad cow.

First visit at lunchtime and a nice little boozer. Good selection of beers, food menu (though I didn't try anything) looked comprehensive and good value and it had a nice atmosphere. I think the other BITE-ers have got it right.

Vey good Marstons pub (I presume) with cheap but good pub food and above average Pedigree. Grantham has had quite a few pubs of this sort in the Beer Guide to complement the free houses and is a great beer town because of it.

Popped in yesterday after the Grantham Beer Festival and was impressed. Staff extremely welcoming and polite. We asked for 3 pints of Pedigree and was told the barrel had just gone, but the manageress -i think- offered to do our pints straight from the barrel which tasted absolutely fantastic.! Sky Sports shown and a decent menu was on offer too! Will visit again next time we're in the town.
