An unusual pub that opens at 10am and isn't a JDW.

Down a delightful narrow pedestrian street, dominated by views of the Cathedral.

Single room, mainly wooden furniture but with one low leather sofa. Quirky decor of old metal advertisements.

Four ales on, two turned the wrong way and both disappointing "chain" ales - Sharp's Atlantic and Hobgoblin.

Functional.

After my disappointment of being able to end the evening at the Foundry we went back onto Butchery Lane and ended the evening in the City Arms.

The City Arms is a very quaint pub on a site where there has been an Inn for over 300 years.

Part owned by Canterbury Brewers and a sister pub to The Foundry, this is a real adults pub, music playing via the bar but it was at a decent level and allowed the wife and I top have a conversation.

6 pumps on the bar that had 1 real cider, 3 Canterbury ales and an offering from Ramsgate Brewery, the other pump was spare waiting for a beer or cider to be put on. I opted for Foundry Torpedo @ 4.5%. A nice beer that was very drinkable.

This pub appeared in the 2014 Camra GBG but hasn't made the 2015 edition...however its a really decent city centre pub and is worthy of a visit.

Sister pub to the Foundry brewpub nearby. Same excellent beers although range not as big. Idyllic location next to the cathedral. These two places are just what Canterbury needed.

I agree with NathanJones about the friendliness of the barstaff and the customers. Not the biggest selection of real ales but those available are local and very well kept. The beer NJ refers to is from the Foundary just down the road and is well worth supping. This pub hasn't always been one I would choose to go to but I've visited a few times recently and been impressed.

Just moved to the area and got caught out in the rain today. dived into this great little pub. Girl behind the bar was really pleasant, customers nice ,the pub was clean and tidy. Most af all the beer is great, you can tell straight away its well looked after. The barmaid said it was brewed by the same company in a brew pub down the road. That's my next visit.

Found by accident, stopped for lunch and a pint. Shame it was Doom Bar, but what they hey. Ordered a sausage and caramelised onion baguette with no butter. When it turned up, I could smell the butter and it was making me wretch. It turns out they cook the onions in butter. Whats the point of ordering something with no butter, only for them to slap in a load of filling soaked in butter? Anyway, I ate around the onions but was left a bit disappointed. The staff were nice enough and welcoming, and the pub itself is a lovely little place. Alongside Doom Bar they had a local Kentish cider which was nice to see. Not bad, but my experience could've been better.

This has the potential to be a great pub. Tucked away down an atmospheric sidestreet it is let down by stunningly rude barstaff.
