Its a Wetherspoons, what more can I say, the beer is cheap, the place was clean the staff friendly, beats being at work, happy days

A maze of a place. Several different drinking areas, with a mix of half cut locals and lads on their way somewhere else, looking to join them. Seemed to be a lot of bar staff, but most of them wandering about, looking for something other to do, than serving. All the pump clips were facing forward, but various beers were off or in the "other bar". Eventually found they had Ruddles on. Which was nice and cheap. Food was O.K.

This was a quiet Sunday night. How on earth do they cope when its busy?

Well what can one say, this pub has the smelliest toilets I have ever had the misfortune to visit. When I pointed out the awful smell to the barman/manager all he said was "Yeah I know"
People sitting eating at tables near the door to the toilets either had no sense of smell or they were used to smells like this.
The beer was not in very good condition, although the barman did remove the sparkler at my request. A definite NO from me. If this was the only pub in Minehead I would be TT. Try the Britannia at Alcombe, 100% better.

As a weatherspoons I was plesently surprised with the decor.
The drink prices are excellent as you would expect from a chain pub.
Unfortunately the food is lacking as our steaks which were orderderd as medium
Arrived burnt beyond well done.
This may have been a foresight but not when the mushrooms are stone cold and raw.

One of the better outlets.

As said, still a well run Wetherspoons which is nice to see given how poorly staffed and cleaned the ones local to me are. Typical good selection of ales, enough trained bar staff so you can get served and a decent overall pub. Nightclub on the premesis too which is a little bizare but at least a talking point.

I'm not a Wetherspoons fan usually, but this place is one of the better ones of that chain. Tried a couple of beers (GK IPA and Exmoor Beast) which were fine, and had a steak which was good, but overcooked. Not a bad experience though.

Great wetherspoons pub in Minehead. It is massive inside with a range of different seating areas and bars all with different atmosheres. Food and drink were good at fantastic prices. 10/10 for this place!

Visited pub last week and had very much mixed feelings about the place. The building itself is impressive and the interior is comfortable however that is where the positivity ends.

I was disappointed when I visited as I was eagarly anticipating the beer ''festival''. Festival!!! - this was more small pub gig than Glastonbury. The first 3 beers I asked for were all unavailable and the rest of the choice was made up by beers that are easily available elsewhere.

Also, a strange guy was hanging around our table outside who looked like he was on day release from care in the community. There was another guy who nearly fell through the glass door and this was all at about 2 in the afternoon.

A lady that we were with who incidentally also likes a drink was so worried about this guy falling on her dog that we ended up leaving!!!

Worst JDW I know, an obnoxious manager, poor service, food not great and most of the time the majority of ales are not on. Add to that uncleared tables just left for ages and you will just wish you had gone elsewhere.

I've given this 3 separate chances now and it has let down every single time. We went to the Old Ship Aground in the harbour after the final fiasco here and were treated like kings, served superb food and some beautifully kept St Austell Tribute. Sorry JDW but you have lost another few customers thanks to this place!

Not our usual first choice when in Minehead, but a typical Weatherspoons, busy at lunchtime today (half-term?). Service was reasonably efficient, food quality not brilliant but at that price you can't really complain. Decent pint of Cottage Brewery Between the Posts. Thatchers Gold cider on draught.

One of the worst Weatherspoons I have ever been in. Saturday afternoon very busy, two bars one person serving on each. I gave up after 10 minutes, shame because they had some interesting beers. Went to a lovely pub on a road off the other side iof the square and had two excellent pipes min very nice surroundings.
avocet - 30 Oct 2010 21:46
PS, message for Gillhalfpint, they have reverted to dumping the toast and preseves on top of the breakfast plate again.

Visited for breakfast before last weekend's beer festival.

As with all spoons, dreadfully slow service, only one girl serving at any one time. The Guy in front of me in the queue wanted no mushrooms and extra egg, or something, with his breakfast. What a palaver, the girl couldn't work the till and the duty manager (who was as grumpy as he was when he worked in the Perkin Warbeck in Taunton) got involved. By the time it was my turn to order, I needed lunch as well as breakfast. What happened to the good old fashioned pen and paper?

At least the beer and surroundings were ok, by Spoons standards. Not the best pub in Minehead, try Steamers Bar.

Nice pub, beer good. They do a carvery on Sundays......dont have it, the meal was luke warm, the veg had dried up and the Roast potatoes ran out, they said more was on the way but they arrived after we had eaten everything else
paulb - 14 Sep 2010 11:41
As Wetherspoons go this is certainly one of the better versions, big comfortable lounge like rooms, clean (which is a pleasant change) and only one 'coming soon' on the bar. Obviously being a Spoons you get the familiar Marston range across most of the pumps with just 2 guests. The outside has a pleasant seating area, if you don't mind the occasional faceful of someone elses smoke. The beer was too cold and one was a little on the edge and it took a while to get served, but otherwise pretty good.
imdownthepub - 10 Sep 2010 08:36
lovely interior, friendly staff and good priced food and beer.
stevefarmer - 7 Mar 2010 21:33
If only all wetherspoons could be like this. Friendly barstaff, clean, good range of ales and a pleasent bunch of customers, puts my local one to shame.

Food was fine too, as ever, cheap but cheerfull. Certainly an improvment on the previous place.

Excellent variety of ales from local breweries. Birthday ale currently on sale supplied from Taunton Ales 'Wellington Pride' only 1.29, bargain! Other ales available from Cotleigh, Exmoor, and a some good Christmas ales too. Well worth a visit.

Couple of moans, but overall very impressed with the Duke of Wellington.

1. One of the hand pump clips kept showing IPA local ale available soon, in fact I was in Minehead for 4 Days , and I still never tasted it, so don't put clips on pumps that are never coming on stream.

3. Supped Exmoor Gold , excellent pint kept, and tried the local ales - found the Gold went down wonderfully.

4. Picked up a leaflet from reception , and didn't read until at home, but found that Lloyds No1 shows live sports, If I had been told that by staff I could have saved a few pounds by staying to watch the England match, and not paying 2.75 a pint ! Down the road.

There was Sky showing the sports news, and I did inquire would they be showing the England match, the answer was No ? - Better product knowledge could have kept me there all night again.

The Pub/Hotel were of a high standard, as was the ale, didn't eat as stopping at Butlins down the road..
The ale was such high quality that I never touched a pint in Butlins Camp !

wafflingdwarf - 18 Oct 2009 12:54
Called in with about a minute to spare for breakfast, and was cheerfully served so that it got through the till before the 12 noon deadline. Food was great, and it was lovely to have the toast and preserves on a separate plate with a clean knife instead of dumped on top of the breakfast like some McSpoons do. Shame the beers were not in tip top condition though. We had two Taunton beers and the Ale was a bit iffy.
gillhalfpint - 14 Sep 2009 10:17
Very impressive McSpoons probably the poshest one I've ever been in. Typical good prices but absolutely no atmosphere. Pleasant staff who called you sir, wow. Would have given it 10/10 but vowed never to give a McSpoons that so 8/10.

Oh yeah local bums use the benches outside.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 30 Aug 2009 21:59
Had been here a few times before it became a spoons. As i was walking towards the building - i was very pleased to see that name above the door!

Once inside, thought it was very well decoarated, the staff had been trained to a great standard, service was the best during my stay in the town! The food was also to a good spec at a gret price (4 for half chicken!)

Must say it was about time Wetherspoons got a pub in that town, the other pubs had been able to serve the same standards of food but at ridiculous prices!

Overal outstanding venue, the best Wetherspoon pub we had ever visited (and we have been in a few!) - a credit to the town!
boggle_uk - 7 Aug 2009 16:50
Went there several times whilst on holiday in Minehead as quite honestly we weren't too impressed with any of the other pubs in town. Having said that, I did think this was one of the best 'Spoons I had ever been to. The staff smiled, you could have some banter with them and were efficient. There was also enough of them!! Clearly the Wetherspoon pandemic has not reached this outpost yet!

The "extra" beers included Exmoor, Cotleigh, Taunton and Butcombe - the latter's Blond being probably the best pint of the week! The food was the usual stuff but at least the price is realistic - unlike some of the other places in town which serve food of the same standard but at twice the price!

Well done to all the staff there - keep it up if you can!

By the way . Do the drunks still put a parking cone on Queen Victoria's head every weekend.?
bee578 - 8 May 2009 02:07
Previously visited this in the !970/80s.Then a traditional hotel that regularly bankrupted its owners. Time moves on and the alterations reflect this . A very good spoons. Only a fleeting visit but the pint of beer tasted good. Must return soon. If BobOs rates it then I will take a couple of days over it.
bee578 - 8 May 2009 02:00
Having just called in again I must say this is the best 'spoons I've visited. Not your usual converted aircraft hangar but half a dozen good size rooms and a couple of bars that retain the character of the hotel that was. Very well run by Andy (ex Yeovil 'spoons and sadly missed there) and his friendly and efficient team. Good range of ales on including Exmoor Gold, Exmoor Ale, Butcombe Brunel (all of which were in excellent condition) as well as all the usual suspects. Normal pub grub of the chain.
BobOs - 2 Feb 2009 13:14
Nicely refurbed J D Wetherlodge, Still seemed to be doing the finishing touches to it when visited last week, not many handpumps sadly (once the token 99p ipa one is in place anyway!), still a well deserved 7/10
fat_beer_badger - 20 Jan 2009 20:41
As posted by others, is now a Wetherspoons.
Is now known as "DUKE OF WELLINGTON" rather than simply the wellington.

Cheap, but not very welcoming, beer only so so.
very quite over Christmas, opening hours seem to be a bit "pot luck"
mikeholt - 19 Jan 2009 13:20
Now a Wetherspoon pub!
Harz99 - 17 Dec 2008 16:56
So-so hotel and bar straight from the 1930's - quite twee and genteel - but it was a nice place to take my mum for Sunday lunch.
BobOs - 15 Dec 2008 16:47
