Recently refurbished pub which was quiet in mid-afternoon apart from some mothers with children. Beer was OK but somehow this place seemed to lack character. There are better pubs nearby, such as the Robin Hood

Recently modernised food oriented place.Apparently used to be a shit hole and needed a major rebranding exercise. Reasonable range of ale but very expensive (£3.90 for Castle Rock Pale Harvest). As for the food, my burger was mediocre at best seved with undercooked fries on a bit of wood (Isn't it time this rediculous fashion ended?), and my partner's tuna sandwich had stale bread. Two TVs were playing loudly with the sound out of synch along with piped music which was very annoying.
The place was, however, very busy so perhaps it's just not for me.

Now open after refurb. A very different place with very different clientele now. Emphasis very much on food I would say. Good range of ale when I visited though with the bar staff very friendly and efficient. Screens showing sport still there but more as a token compromise rather than a focus.

Currently being refurbished.

Called in for a pint (and to defrost) after watching St Albans City FC. The Black Sheep was good but the range of ales was limited. More of a lager & footy pub so, if thats what you're after, you'll not be disappointed.

went in today for their 1st beer festival and the choice and quality were good, new friendly landlady ,decent food.prices right for the area, very clean. short walk out of town past station or bus 3 times an hour, give it a try.
THUNFAN007 - 19 Oct 2011 07:26
was a good drink this easter entertainly had a gas leak but other than that beer and music was good
marinetank0 - 9 Sep 2011 19:17

Good pub to watch sports, but that's about it. Last time I went there was a group of coked-up children telling racist jokes, and the garden was littered with dog turds. Nice.

I decided to watch the World Cup in The Crown as a friend suggested it , I was a little nervous as I was aware how busy it gets for football games.
I found The Crown to be a brilliant venue to watch the games, the staff were very friendly and helpful even though they were busy, the atmosphere was brilliant and there was a real mix of females and males. The Manageress was very helpful and when someone knocked over my drink in the excitment of the game she came and brought me another one for free!!
The prices were resonable and the service was good. I will definitly be going back here to watch the football in future!

Large locals' pub round the corner from St Albans station. An attractive red-brick frontage hides a spacious interior with a number of different parts to it. A fairly basic "lager and sports screens" type of boozer. At least one real ale was on when I visited (Young's), which was more than I expected.

i've been in here a few times now to do the quiz, which is always good fun. They have changed management so it's now much better now. Only disapointment was I couldn't get a seat for one of the football games - will get there early in future.
puddenpies - 1 Feb 2010 19:00
Sports pub, worth a visit to watch something on the screens or have a game of pool. Not one to visit to get a crackin pint of ale.
RedHarvest - 18 Dec 2009 12:35
Went here to watch the british lions test matches. could not have asked for better service or atmoshpere or cleanliness. The several TVs and screens meant that you could have easily found a good viewing spot. The bar maid was friendly and quick at serving during the game and at half time. No over the top rowdiness or agro like you can get with football. Will definitly watch all future rugby games here.

i have been back in the Crown now around six times, and im pleased that the new landlady has kept the Beer nice and the pub clean.I went in there last tuesday and it was quite busy,a pool match i think.but very pleasant evening
andson - 3 Dec 2008 13:52
Wow,well what can i say.its been a while since i stepped in this pub,but what a difference,it was Thursday and a quiz night, apart from that the beer was good, and the place is clean for a change.Iremember the gents toilets were so bad,you could'nt even play pool down at that end.It could do with a repaint all over, its still dark and tired looking. But at least it looks like someone has taken it seriously now, which is great.I will definetly re-visit now, lets hope they keep it up.
andson - 21 Nov 2008 16:43
i must have another visit soon
hertsboy - 21 Nov 2008 11:11
It's improved recently. The new landlord seems a decent bloke. The rude woman who worked there (previous manager) is gone. The chavs are deserting the place (and there was me thinking people on benefit wouldn't feel the effects of the credit crunch). I still think the Guinness is a bit iffy.
Sherminator - 13 Nov 2008 22:08
Has lots of TVs for watching sport, and serves several varieties of Lager. Close to St. Albans City FC. Needs some TLC.
seasiderMM - 9 Apr 2008 15:18
The woman who works in the kitchen is an absolute joke! As soon as i see her coming out of that kitchen, i make a run for it, and so do a lot of people. If you want things to get better in that pub somebody needs to sort her out! SOON!!
andson - 22 Mar 2008 22:11
I'm not sure what the level below rock bottom is but the Crown is there. It's almost worth visiting to see the state of the gents. Was in there last Sunday and about 15 people were thrown out after two women started fighting. Am almost sure the lager had me sitting on the toilet several times the next day.
Sherminator - 26 Jan 2008 17:44
This pub could be nice if it had a)customers b) a friendly manager. I was here recently on a saturday and it was deserted!
hertsboy - 31 Oct 2007 11:00
Praying that a new tenant takes over soon - this place is now so bad that it would almost be funny if it wasn't my local. It's as if they're actively trying to deter punters, e.g. has it occurred to them that having loud, crap karaoke blaring out throughout the pub might be somehow connected with the fact that it was practically empty at 9pm on a Friday evening a couple of weeks ago?
GoonerNick - 6 Aug 2007 16:52
Better than I feared. Had a quite a reasonable pint of Adnams Bitter for 2.30 and there were some reasonable deals on offer for the food. 5 TV screens, quiz night on Thursday and karaoke (ugh) on Friday. Could be worse.
shygeezer - 30 Jul 2007 07:57
The manageress told me tonight that another company has taken over!! Praise the Lord. In the mean time they are not accepting cards at the bar. Ideal for a quiet drink because the place is deserted.
Sherminator - 23 Jun 2007 22:59
It has reached rock bottom. The lease is up for renewal, a saviour is needed. Last time I was in there there was a flood in the gents and no one cared. The lady running the place isn't the most customer oriented, I handed in a 20 for two pints and said I had the change so she could give me 15 change "too slow" she said and handed me a lload of coins!
Sherminator - 10 Jun 2007 21:53
It could be a lovely pub if they:
Did something about the smoke
Got rid of the locals
Gutted the place
RashersOKane - 2 Feb 2007 15:48
Had a quick pint of Bombardier here on Sunday, got to say its got even worse, well done for keeping the worst tasting pint in St. Albans!
anonymous - 18 Sep 2006 17:58
An ok pub, but rather dark and lacking in character and any kind of charm. Ok for a stop off beer if you're passing, but no more than that. Watch out for bar staff putting too much ice in drinks!!
anonymous - 7 Sep 2006 18:38
Identikit pub, nothing that really makes it stand out in any way in terms of character or beer choice. However, the staff are very friendly and nice and the prices aren't too bad.
treefrog - 12 Aug 2006 13:36
A huge place, with a somewhat impersonal atmosphere to match. But the service is good and there are lots of wines and shorts, reasonably priced. Not so good for beer drinkers like me: only Bombardier and Greene King IPA. Overall this doesn't "feel" like a St Albans pub - you could be anywhere.
anonymous - 5 Apr 2006 09:12
Enormous pub! The barlady was welcoming and the Bombardier I drank was OK, but the atmosphere was very formal and standoffish. But then again, how could it be otherwise with so many rooms, nooks and crannies? OK for a quick drink with a group of friends, or if the trains go haywire and you need a drink to pass the time.
anonymous - 12 Nov 2005 16:59
How sad. This pub used to be lovely, all dark and cosy with nice corners and wood and 'the office' and a really good pub quiz. Now it's hideous and well-lit. High ceilings. Terrible beers.
anonymous - 14 Oct 2005 14:15
Used to be ok but now do not care about ale drinkers, worst real ale in St. Albans, good for footie though (drink Guiness)
Henners - 31 Aug 2005 14:32
Surly staff, average pub grub, recent pub overhaul improves old dim image. No good ale. TVs everywhere! Huge pub.
Allan Stewart - 18 Mar 2004 00:52
Nice start to a crawl, down the road from the train station, massive place. Decent food and has a pool table
dpiom - 11 Mar 2004 20:23
Not too bad, it often has offers on drinks and stays open late. Quite far from the town centre though and not really worth the mission.
anonymous - 29 Dec 2003 17:49
great meeting place and how about more offers on the vodka!!! as it is the new it drink !!
janet rimmer - 16 Sep 2003 00:50
Another great pub with a constantly chaging list of guest ales. Music on 3 nights a week and an open mike night to.
Food is quite good and, along with the ales, reasonably priced -well worth a visit either as for quiet drink in the afternoon or the start to a night out !
