Ramsay's Real Ale Bar (at the Buckingham Hotel), Buxtonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
I stay at this hotel each year during the G&S Festival. Have to say that the beer selection and quality has gone downhill since last year. The food is still pretty good however.

Heard about this place from BITE and glad I checked as I would never have stumbled across it otherwise. Tucked away in the Buckingham Hotel we walked through a couple of corridors until we got to the bar which was surprisingly modern in decor and character. The range of beers though is truly fantastic, worth a visit just for that. What a shame I drank the house wine with the meal - it was rank! The food, like the beer, is great, and not expensive at all. There is a large dining area at the back which is more suited to large groups. The (pink) decor in that room is...interesting. Really friendly staff - really good place.

Something of a mixed experience here...arrived around 6.30pm on a Sunday night. Bar area was sparsely populated and a single barman behind the pumps. We approached the bar and began perusing the handpumps to settle on our choice, although he did not acknowledge us at this stage. During this period, and despite having no other customers to serve, the barman chose to come out from behind the bar and walked to the far end of the room where he started waving a TV remote around whilst discussing something with a group of drinkers at a table, presumably over something to do with the rather loud commentary coming from the three huge flatscreens pumping out the Spanish football. He then returned to the bar area, walked straight past us and started a conversation with first one, then another couple who were perusing menus and dithering over where to sit at tables. All this time, he strode past us several times before returning behind the bar and finally acknowledging us with a "you all right there, guys"? Mmmmm...no we weren't , actually. However, we were only there for the beer, so a choice of Titanic, Abbeydale and Church end beers were on offer and all were very good. We will return again, as events at the Opera House will draw us back, but the initial customer contact needs to be much improved to keep us coming back.

Attractive and interesting, but local beer was very average (despite decent turnover).

My wife and I have stayed at the Buckingham twice this year and I have been absolutely overwhelmed to find well-kept beer in a hotel bar! I agree that the decor is a bit bare and my wife is still cursing the management for not having any port but it's definitely a good place for a beer drinker.

Still as good as ever, bar food a bit on the expensive side but it is a hotel after all.

Visited at the end of February '09. Bar opening at 1800 hours is a bit of a bugger after a long drive. There are about half a dozen real ales, and although some are weak and blonde, there is bound to be something acceptable even if you've not heard of it before. I had a guest ale from Somerset - forget what it was - seemed a long way to go for a pint that came almost from my doorstep. Staff are excellent, and what a roast lamb the chef turned out for me. After a day of driving and no lunch I nearly ate the plate too. Highly recommended.

Looked forward to visiting this pub, but found out it does not open till around 6pm, and as my bus to Leek went out at 3pm I had to miss out. I did enjoy the real ale in Buxtons Beltane and Swan though. Pity I couldn't drink in this one.

Six real ales in good condition and five other good quality beers from around the world available from the bar. Excellent home cooked food. This is an essential visit for anyone in Buxton.
The (fairly) recent renervation has left the bar a little spartan, but the beer and food are as good as ever.

Although it's a hotel bar it normally has four or five real ales available in good nick. Also has a vast range of spirits of all types, including some good scotches. Admittedly I only visit here one week a year during the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Festival but have no reason to suppose it's not as good at other times. From time to time it has been included in the Good Beer Guide.
