It was an update - it was CLOSED then, now it's demolished, there is a difference even if you're too thick to spot it.

YOU posted 4 years ago, saying the same. Bored?

Demolished apparently to make way for more flats.

This Victorian pub, originally called the Railway Hotel, became the Royal Engineer (after the barracks opposite) in the 1970s, but because of the perceived threat of Irish terrorism was renamed the Railway Engineer. A few years ago it changed its name to the Angel & Crown, a name also used for an ancient pub by the Village Pond on The Ridgeway, closed in the 1930s and demolished in the 1960s. I'm not sure whether this pub ever traded as the Angel & Crown but if so, it certainly didn't last long and has been boarded up for two or three years now.

They tried but they failed - it is now boarded up with rumours about a Tesco Metro which of course is absolutely necessary seeing the nearest big supermarket is at least 500 yds away.

Can someone confirm if this is still open? Have been told it's becoming a supermarket!

This place seems a bit of a wasted opportunity. Looks huge from the outside, but when you wander in, the massive bar in the middle cuts the pub in half, with the pool tables in one (front) area and seating at the back. And that just felt a bit cavernous.
Had a couple of ale pumps, but both clips (Black Sheep and one other) were turned round, so it was Smiths and Strongbow instead. And 6.10 for the two pints, which felt pricey to me.
No Sky Sports either, according to the sign inside the door.

I popped in here on a week night recently and all the beer had run out except for the Carlsberg which was being changed. I asked the barmaid if the pub was shut and she snapped that they had been busy. It didnt seem that busy to me as the front of the pub was empty and there were a dozen or so intimidating regulars playing on the two pool tables and watching Sky Sports on the massive plasma screen.

I didnt like the staff or the clientele and there was no beer I'll not be rushing back.

They have tried of that there is no question. The restaurant area is a little clinical. The bitter was not good. Unfortunately it's infested with the same people as before and therefore you feel immediately uncomfortable. Imagine, four hillbilly looking females draped in various poses over the sofas in the front bar and one of them is changing a babys nappy! Would you want to eat or drink there? Will not be returning!

It always looks empty when you pass it on the bus - and so it was when I ventured in one Saturday night. The few locals tend to inhabit the bar at the back. I can understand why because you feel llike you're in a goldfish bowl in the front bar with it's clear panoramic windows inviting all and sundry from the surrounding flats and the bus stop to gawk at you while you're having your pint. The decor and general cleanliness is a vast improvement on it's former incarnation. Unfortunately the real ale was awful.... to the extent of undrinkable even. Even with it's bright interior and pleasanter surroundings it's a pub where you won't feel at ease if you aren't a local.
I have to give them full marks for effort in difficult surroundings I give the place a try but doubt I'll be back in a hurry.

This pub is now called The Angel & Crown. It has a games bar with 2 big screen TV'a and 2 pool tables. It also has an amazing restaurant that serves a Carvery on Sunday lunch, BOOKING ESSENTIAL, and a full menu at all other times as well as bar snacks.
It has been refurbished by it's new owner over the last year since he took it over. It is now a really good place for drinking and eating. A wide selection of lagers and also real ales now served.

This weekend has started off with the live band Far Cry. It was a great evening with a warm atmosphere, very enjoyable. Well done Donna for making everyone welcome.

since the enigneers has been taken over by new management it has turned itself around completely.
this is a great pub with a great atmosphere.
they have loads of live bands coming up and they have managed to get rid of all the hoodies.
they have turned the pub into a brighter and cleaner place to drink.
congratulations to the management and good luck for the future.

Friendly welcome for such a forboding looking pub, toilets awful! Staff surprising friendly and lots to do. Most customers somewhere near the next life! enjoyed it funny enough!
stemginger - 3 Oct 2006 23:25
good pub for watching sports......THATS ALL. Terrible lager (drink bottle lager) no food (blessing). snorkel needed for toilets, lots of hooded teens with no money hiding around pool table area, no managment, boxer dog goes round sniffing everones groin area. local wouldbe chemist doing good trade. health and safety issue here. only plus, good bar staff under pressure by delegated orders from management, who ever they are.
keiss - 28 Jul 2006 15:24

Big pub brill for sport could do with doing food

pub could do with a lick of paint in and out
IZZYBON - 27 Jul 2006 22:56

This place used to be great in the 70's, I used to sing there for free drinks and food! Always a great night!
