Gastropub next to West Norwood station. It opens at 10:30 at weekends for breakfast. So it made for a handy starting point for a tour around 10 pubs in South East London yesterday morning. One of the first things you notice as you walk in is a departure board for the station. This proved quite handy, especially when I decided to stop for a second half. Ales were Sambrook's Wandle & Truman's Arctic Ale & Lazarus. I later spotted a real cider - Ascension Shimmy. The Arctic Ale was £1.91 for a half with a CAMRA discount. The Shimmy was £2.60 for a half. I didn't dare ask for a discount the second time, as the barman hadn't got a clue how to pour a cider from a bag in the box and he certainly couldn't find it on the till. A couple managed to beat me through the door. They looked like they were there for breakfast. But they were drinking too. The resident cat sounded like it was waiting for breakfast too. A decent start to my day.

Once upon a time you'd have gentlemen walking around this pub collecting for the cause. That was an age ago.
It's alright. Identi-kit gentrified pub but serving some interesting decent beers.

This pub lacks a lot in atmosphere, single bar. Not the sort of pub to meet for a chat, as the music is constantly too loud and not the best for sport. No food menu. Bar staff welcoming. Overall better pubs in the area.

Changed management a year or so ago. Policy now appears to be to play loud music, whether you want to hear it or not, until you leave. Free bit of grub on a sunday to try and tempt people in.
Main reason for going in was to chat to one of the barmaids who was a good laugh, but she appears to have left now as well.

Not a lot to recommend this pub. No real ale, no character or atmosphere. Just one bar of course � I remember when it used to have two. One side of the bar is occupied by no less than five one-armed bandits or other games machines. I don�t suppose I shall bother to visit again � The Hope around the corner is far superior.
