Delightful classic village pub that I was lucky enough to stumble across recently. This place pulls off the rare trick of simultaneously feeling very cosy, whist also being spacious largely by having a lay out consisting of several small separate areas. Either side of the door are two areas with comfy sofas and views of the road outside, then there is a square room behind the bar where the regulars seem to congregate in a snug-style environment and opposite that is a larger area seemingly dedicated to dining and a jolly nice place to settle in for a meal it would undoubtedly be.
So enough about the building, what of the drinks, food and service? Well the former are very pleasant, they had two real ales on Hobgoblin and the less frequently encountered Buntingford Highwayman IPA which myself and my companions had. Jolly nice it is too, a quaffable beer with a nice earthy taste to it. The beer was well kept and at £3.30 a pint, very reasonable too. There was also a real cider available.
Food was generously portioned and tasty. I had the locally farm produced Sausages with mash and onion gravy which consisted of some plump, robustly flavoured bangers a hefty dollop of creamy mash and a very rich gravy swimming with onions, all very good. My companions had generous plates of ham, egg and chips which I am told were very good.
The service was friendly and attentive, setting up a tab without our requesting it and checking everything was fine throughout.
In conclusion, if you find yourself in the Wareside area and are either hungry thirsty or just fancy somewhere to relax a while, you'd be a fool not to pop into The Chequers.

A lovely little village pub serving a couple of ales and a cider. Youngs Special & Buntingford Highwayman IPA were the ales. The cider was Gwynt y Ddraig Happy Daze. Had a fairly decent menu too, with plenty of game and fish options. The interior is fairly large with a front bar area and a larger dining area behind. There are some outdoor tables at the front and at the side.

Nice welcome from the landlady/staff and interactive with the locals.
Buntingford's Highwayman is still the long-time regular ale alongside the two changing guest beers.
From the chalkboard I chose the pigeon pie with veg - it was delicious.
The pub has not changed much over the years - which is no bad thing.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Cosy, old-school pub in a sleepy hamlet on the Hertfordshire Way if you like waking.
I would concur with the last poster - no way is this place cliquey or unfriendly. In fact, on my half-dozen or so visits over the last couple of years, I don't think there has been a single occasion where we haven't struck up a conversation with someone. The couple that run the place are really genial too.
Beer choice slightly limited for me, usually Buntingford Highwayman plus two nationals and a cider. Always well kept though, and food is very reasonably priced.

Characterful village free house with a mixed clientele. Contrary to the previous post, I'd say the pub is very welcoming.
Three real ales were available- Highwayman from the Buntingford Brewery, Theakstons Grouse Beater and Adnams Explorer.
I also purchased some very reasonably priced hot and spicy pickled onions.
I would strongly recommend this pub if you're in the area.

It has been some time since I was last in here. A bit of a locals pub that tend to give you the silent treatment upon entering. Luckily no one was in on this particular Saturday lunchtime (just how I like it - no crowds).
The chalkboard menu has always provided adequate choice at slightly above average price, nothing had changed there. My rump steak was rather on the tough side.
The ale choice was always hard to swallow as well, Greene King or its offspring. But this has now changed. Buntingford's Highwayman is the house regular. Fullers Summer Ale and Everads Tiger were also on.

I love this pub. I take my old mum out for Sunday lunch every Sunday and this is a regular venue. It has the double advantage of being dog-friendly (she has a little Westie called Zippy) and vegan friendly I am vegan and do not find many pubs can feed me. The Chequers food is very good and all home cooked. They have developed a nice range of vegetarian and vegan meals including soya and vegetable pies. The fish and meat dishes are according to mum very fine too. Very cheap Sunday lunches. And an ever changing lineup of beers. Brilliant..

Traditional style freehouse with a couple of ales and real open fire. Friendly service and chatty regulars. Homemade pickles and chutneys are sold behinds the bar.
I really like it here.
