user reviews of the Aqueduct Inn, Froncysyllte

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Of the 10 pubs we tried in the Wrexham area yesterday, this was certainly one of the best 3. The Aqueduct enjoys a splendid location on a steep bank overlooking the Pontcysylltye Aqueduct and is also alongside the main A5. There are 3 choices of rooms on entry. To the left is a dining area, to the right is a games room where darts is played and live sport is shown on TV and in the middle is perhaps the smallest room, where locals congregate. The ale range was better than I had anticipated - Hafod Clwydian Bronze, Titanic Steerage & Slaters Top Totty. Parking is a bit tricky. But if you're passing by on the A5, give it a try.

visited in july 2014 on a saturday lunchtime. Glorious weather, fantastic view over the canal, great choice of real ales on tap (and in excellent condition) plus knowledgeable and friendly staff - what more can you ask for!

Ignore previous ratings which are very old and a previous generation of owner!!

The Aqueduct Inn, Froncysyllte .
A ray of hope for Froncysyllte real ale drinkers.....The Aqueduct inn which has been closed for some nine months has been sold to an enterprising pair of guys who plan to open again on Saturday 25th May 2013. @ midday.
The very Charismatic Paul Beard will be at the helm and has plans to run the Pub very much on the lines of involving the community. Having met Paul several times I can only say that if he can't make it work no one can. He is a real people person with a great sense of humour (essential in these challenging times).

Paul plans to initially have Greene King IPA and Hancocks HB which is a 3.6% session bitter originally brewed by Hancock's brewery................ along with a Natch west country cider. Will also be doing the usual keg Lagers no the non converted .
Food will be also a part of the service initially being hot & cold snacks.Hot snacks availabe at re launch as follows....Burgers in a bun £3.00 dressed with salad.. Bacon baps..£2.00, and Hot dogs. £1.50

Paul has already had a meeting with locals in the community centre in order to let them know the initial plans ,and crucially asking the locals what they would like to see and have...now thats a real step in the right direction.Paul said they have been bowled over by the welcome from the locals at the meeting , and got some very useful feedback.
The exterior will be re painted by a local company, and the seating is to be made comfortable with new fillings and covers....also the former "very red Bar" will be "toned down" I am informed.......
The re launch on May 25th will be celebrated with a 72 hour "discount drinks promotion" ( I would call it a very big happy hour ). There are plans to introduce a quiz night with prizes like a gallon of beer for the winning team !! ...also thinking of trying a music quiz . I wish them every success .

As already stated the pub has lost its character in the make over.
We used to call when walking in the area and enjoy both the beer and the food. Now advertises cask ales and offered two 'major' beers. I chose Brains SA and received the worst pint of SA I have had in Wales. Left without finishing it and won't be going back. Pubs like this have to realise where quality and value are or they will add to the list of closures.

I was looking forward to a pint here after walking along the towpath from Chirk. Unfortunately it was closed (during half term with loads of people about) as the board outside the pub declared Winter hours (in Autumn) from 4p.m to 12 p.m...so I had to go elsewhere. Oh well, their loss.

Well, it looks like I'm the first to post on this one as well.

Haven't people in Wales heard of BITE, I wonder ?

The Aqueduct ( with an "e") Inn is a smallish roadside pub on the main A5 road in the village of Froncysyllte, approx 4 miles south from Llangollen and close to the famous "canal in the sky".

When I first visited this pub a few years ago, it was a slightly run down but characterful Marstons pub, retaining evidence of even earlier days as a Border Breweries pub. The hanging pub sign now indicates that Admiral Taverns have acquired this pub. The interior has been sanitisedsomewhat and much of the original character has disappeared.

There's a carpeted games room on the right ( snooker table, dartboard ) and a comfortable lounge on the left designed for dining. The small central bar is bare boarded and, on my recent visit, was dominated by a smallish but loud flat screen TV. There's a new small outside decking area at the back of the pub which affords views of the canal, but not the aqueduct itself which is round a corner in the canal and largely hidden by trees.

Prince Charles popped in to this pub in March 2009, but there's no evidence of this apart from a framed letter of thanks from Clarence House.

2 real ales were on when I visited - Brains SA and Morlands Speckled Hen. The Brains was in good nick.

Despite the pub being on the main A5 road to Holyhead and close to this tourist site, I was virtually the only customer in the pub during the lunchtime period of 10 September, although the friendly young Welsh landlady told me it had been much busier the day before.

It's not a particularly inspiring pub, but it's open all day and currently serves food from 12-4 and 6-9 if you fancy popping in.
