Steam, Newquayback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A very large pub which also serves food and has accommodation. It is owned by St Austell brewery and has their usual range of beers including a very good pint of Proper Job. It also has a large outside space with seating which has a panoramic view of the sea. Years ago this was known as the Western Bars and was a bit dark and dingy... but some decent bands used to play there. It has to be said that the current arrangement is a vast improvement and fits well into what today's Newquay has to offer.... even though lacking a bit of the character of old.

Went in for a quick pint with low expection and was pleasantly surprised. Bright, clean and huge it clearly caters for large family groups. Beer, Proper Job, was in good condition and served by very friendly barman.

Early Dec 2011. Clean tidy and friendly pub/hotel bar. Superb Proper Job. Decent food. Lovely views and professional staff. Usual St Austell brewery high standards.

The bar has been nicely refurbished and the food is improving after a poor start. The outside terrace on the cliff top is lovely and the views fantastic. Shame the music has to be so loud outside though. It's supposed to be suitable for families and older people, not the usual Newquay stag type crowd. However, when I was there the music was so loud you could hardly engage in conversation and several other groups looked really unhappy and ready to move on. The 2 stag parties enjoyed it though and were in fine voice! Perhaps this is what the pub is ultimately aiming for.

They had the seasonal ale, Liquid Sunshine in last week. It was in very good condition but we did have to keep requesting our pints to be topped up. They are rather slow tidying up tables when vacated, the only table we found available was swimming in some sticky cocktail spilt from a jug. Apart from that, this is a good bar to get away from the stag parties which tend to migrate towards the centre of town.

Steam is the recently refurbished bar and restaurant of the Great West Hotel and is open to non residents. The room itself is huge, but there is a nice warm homely feel about it and there are stunning views from the windows over the Great Western Beach and there are similar views from the large outside terrace.
The hotel, which is part of the St Austell Brewery estate, serves Tribute, Proper Job and Tinners. I did not sample the Tinners, but the pints of Tribute and Proper Job that I drank were superb.
The food is pretty good too. Perhaps the menu which features a selection of Cornish and Mediterranean dishes might not suit everybodys taste, but it is freshly cooked, nicely served, and many of the ingredients are sourced locally.
All-in-all, there is nothing really to be critical about. Steam is clean and very comfortable; the dcor is tasteful; the staff are very friendly; even the toilets are first class.
