Stayed at the Mortal Man for 1 night at the end of November. Room was very comfortable & clean. The bar/restaurant was very busy in the evening with diners, it was a Saturday mind. However, this did not leave much room for drinkers if you did not want a table for dinner. The actual bar area is pretty small so felt a bit in the way standing at it having my pint. I did manage to sit on 1 of 2 bar stools to one side after a while so ok in the end. They had 4 ales on, all local from Cumbria, good condition and tried them all - couldn't decide between Hawkshead Sally Birkett's Ale or Loweswater Gold as my favourite. Both excellent. Took a 6 mile walk round the valley with beautiful scenery the next morning. This place is well worth a visit. Oh, be warned, if travelling up by car and using satnav, beware of huge potholes in the little lane it sends you on up to the pub - especially on the sharp right hand bend! There is a better way in as I found the next day but I did arrive in the dark.

Beer choice and quality was top notch - 4 Cumbrian ales to choose from including Coniston Bluebird, Loweswater Gold, a Hesket Newmarket Ale and a Hawkshead. Great beer garden as well - also, had the vegetable Tagine along with Tzatziki as side dish, all homemade and delicious - no issue with paying slightly higher prices for quality and location.

great for a pint in the garden or the bar, but for a meal, totally hit and miss. You might get what you ordered, if not, check your neighbours table. Same goes for the bill. Fine if it works in your favour. otherwise, a shambles. Avoid the garden room, looks nice but nobody comes to serve you. Understaffed. The manager must know how many bookings they have taken for the evening. Shame for such a nice location.

Very handy for a refreshment after the walk from Ambleside. Good selection of real ales and flavoured hot drinks for the tee totalers in your party. A little pricey but a nice old fashioned country pub.

Came in on the strength of "CAMRA's Lake District pub walks".
Good range of beer and excellent garden as the book says. However, and I don't blame the author of the book (!) we were a bit hacked off, as a group, that the tables in the main bar were occupied by a family consisting of about four small children (aged under ten) who had a large chair each and a pair of tables to themselves forcing us outside. Parents, needless to say, seemed not a jot embarrassed let alone apologetic. Pubs have to decide if they are catering for paying adults or acting as creches!

Excellent food, reasonable, well kept beer range and a view to die for from the beer garden too.

Well done to the guys who have taken it over with best intentions following recent troubles. Their reign started slightly chaotically but reports are they are getting back on track - potential to be a truly great pub.

Dropped into The Mortal Man on a glorious September day midway through the classic circuit from Ambleside. Had no idea about it's troubled recent past. Pleased to report that the new owners have done a terrific job inside and out. Enjoyed a couple of fine pints of local ale (but can't remember which!) in what must be one of the best beer gardens in the country. A special place.

The Mortal Man has now thankfully re-opened. We have missed it. The new owners have done a wonderful job superb food both bar meals and an excellent restaurant, a good selection of beers and wine. Its also a great place to stay the views of course are still magnificent.

CLOSED. This used to be an excellent pub (c. 6 years ago) and I had looked forward to re-visiting this 17C pub with, perhaps, the best view in England. However, when I arrived, it was closed, seized by bailiffs for Ent*rpr*se *nns. A talk with the locals and a look at TripAdvisor show that the most recent landlord seemed to have run the place into the ground. TripAdvisor reports seem to show a disturbing run of credit card frauds at the place in the past 3 months.
