John Peel Inn, Bowness on Windermereback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
I recently attended this pub with a group of friends, for food, spending around £60 on food and drink. When I told the landlady/owner - an elderly lady with short, dyed blonde hair, - that I had HUMAN FAECES on my hands - (BEFORE my meal arrived) - after finding it smeared on the toilet door handle, I was left feeling VERY disappointed when I - very discreetly - told the landlady/owner about it, and asked for some anti-bacterial solution for my hands, as I was just about to eat my meal. I was spoken to with condescension, contempt, and complete disrespect in response. Apparently I should have known already that the soap in the toilets was anti bacterial, and I shouldn't have been bothering her with such an inconvenient request. There was NO APOLOGY, and no attempt to resolve the situation. She had already spoken to one of my friends in a very disrespectful manner too, and if we hadn't already ordered our food (and paid for it) we would have walked out on the spot. I think this women should learn a valuable life lesson. Leave paying customers happy, not feeling ripped off, disgusted, and angry that they get spoken down to like they are stupid, and they won't feel the need to go home and warn others about their experience on review sites. These people, that she obviously feels are way below her, keep her business running. While I obviously don't blame the pub for the faeces incident, the way this woman spoke to me, and responded to the problem was WAY below what I would have expected. After all, I was a paying customer, about to eat my meal, and who had just had a very unhygenic experience.

I would call this a bland pub. However it had customers in and drinking at 4pm also serving food. Flat but non threatening atmosphere. Ghost Ship on and very nice. Needs good staff, dynamic and engaging. Bar man couldnt give a hoot, totally disinterested. Please engage people, drinking in your pub is a choice, one of many, some with much nicer credentials. Sell your pub at all times.

Found it a reasonable pub with three ales on although they were all Christmas brews. Beer was okay and pub wasn't bad for a tourist haunt.

It is hard to understand how this pub has such a low rating.

Pleasant enough, but a bit quiet at this time of year.

Well, I'm not a local....yet, but I've yet to have a bad time in this pub. I've always found the staff to be friendly and the licensee and his wife are more than welcoming. I once had a pint here, which was poured with a rather head and and landlords wife came and took it away saying "we don't do big heads like that in here" before topping it up properly. I was in there last week and the roaring fire and staff made it a very warm place indeed. The landlord knows how to keep a good pint in the John Peel and the guest beers are great. I know that some people have said they've had a disappointing time in here but I can only say that my visits here have been very enjoyable and I for one, will definitely be going back....the 'Christmas' guest ales are worth a visit alone!

Went in last few days. Rude and brusque staff. Overpriced beer , very average food. Avoid
|
Truly awful pub with little or no atmosphere. Avoid like the proverbial plague!
The staff are rude and unattentive. The alleged manager/owner even worse!
The food was OK............................just
You have been warned.

Never again. Surly owner who was VERY rude to a customer who was obviously a tourist - only interested in the locals (only about 3 of them in). We all felt quite uncomfortable in there - not made to feel welcome at all more like intruders. Owner should realise a lot of his custom comes from holidaymakers - we will never go in there again.

went into this pub june last year. lass behind the bar as miserable as sin. food ok though, as was beer.

This pub was a bit of a let down. Looks like a place where you may get a decent choice of beers, but despite claims about proper ale on offer only one hand pull was on. Decent pint of Theakstons though.Looks like lager and blue wicked are more their crowd.
|
Couple of decent ales on. Certainly not the best of the pubs in Bowness, but would definitely lift the standard in some parts of the country.
|
Its a wee bit tired looking but a good pint of theakstons best worked a treat
