The Chetnole Inn was another bonus pub for us in Dorset. But this was another disappointment. Ales were Butcombe Gold & Adam Henson's Rare Breed, Wriggle Valley Golden Bear & Ringwood Forty Niner. The cider was Cheddar Valley dispensed from a font.. But the barmaid informed me that it was fizzy. So I politely declined. We were the only customers and we sat in the lounge/dining area. Several tables had dinner reservations laid out on them. There is another separate bar area.

QUIET LIKE MOST PUB IN THE AREA THIS TIME OF YEAR.

We visited this pub for lunch and found it spotlessly clean, maybe a bit clinical, and thought it would benefit from some carpeting or drapes to make it more cosy and improve the acoustics. The staff were polite and friendly.
Our food was good but rather pricey for a rural Dorset pub - �6 for a dessert is too much. I doubt we will be returning as there are less expensive places to obtain a good meal, which is an important consideration in these recessionary times

We visited on a Saturday night in January and had a fantastic 3 course meal in the lounge bar, coupled with well kept Doom Bar and Otter Bitter and a good choice of wine. The end bill was a bit lumpy, but overall I have no complaints as the service was brilliantly helpful and the food was spot on - one of those meals you rave about for ages and bore your mates about. An intelligently put together menu that clearly uses local ingredients where possible, with a helpful chef who happily catered for my gluten-free partner which marks it up several notches in our book. That's judging it as a restaurant... as a pub however the lounge bar doesn't quite cut it - just a little bit too cold (literally and decoratively), despite the log burner in the hearth which in the recent cold weather draws me like a magnet to a pub. There are too many reflective stone or painted surfaces . On a previous visit we noted how noisy the restaurant side was with a crowd of diners eating, obtrusively noisy in fact; I understand in a previous decorative setup there was carpet over the flagstone floors - yes the stone looks lovely, but a nice thick rug or two would do wonders for sound absorption as well feeling a bit more homely and, well, 'pub-like'.
The other bar got extremely lively later on in the evening, so that must be where the party's at - next time we'll pop in that side for a beer if we're not eating. The landlord and his staff seem well liked in the area and attract people from far and wide, so they're onto a good thing and it's a cut above the average country gastro pub.
I'd give it 9/10 for food and 7/10 as a pub

Visited on a Friday lunchtime - nice walk there from the station. Place has two bars - the lounge is also the restaurant. Good beer - Doom Bar and Otter, both in good condition.
It was as per previous posters comments though no well-off pensioners - just a few other people. using both the bars. Food very nice but perhaps either need to shave back the prices or increase the portions slightly. But still good overall - 8 out of 10.

The landlord here has got everything under control: a good choice of well-kept beers; a short, sharp menu full of fresh food choices; and, oh wonder of wonders, everything is so clean! He served drinks at the bar; took food orders at the table; delivered the food orders; and then cleared away. All by himself and without any sign of anybody being kept waiting. He was very pleasant too - why can't more places be like this? Lunchtime clientele comprised well-off pensioners and not much sign of anyone else, but then I'm getting close to the pensioner bit myself. Definitely a place to go back to.
