Busy bar with live music on Thursday evening. Food looked good, and decent range of ales.

if you find yourself in Scarborough and want some quality ales, this is a good place to try. quite a walk from the centre. They brew their own beer, Scarborough Brewery, is I remember correctly. 5 or 6 ales on.

3rd pub on my lightning tour of Scarborough, again great selection of ale and very decent atmosphere for a snowy Tuesday night.

A gem of a place this, much nicer than some of the more "touristy" pubs in town, & definately worth the 10 minute walk from the seafront. Good and varied mix of clientel, both young & old. Quite during the day (tho it was a Thurs pm in November) but very busy when we returned on the Saturday evening when the excellant live band The Shamrockers had everyone tapping and singing along.

Nice enough inside, various SIB beers all in good form. Food was much nicer than the price or location might suggest. TV in one half, quieter in other. Well worth a visit. Easy to miss if in car. (If there's still a contradictory posting from me below it's because I got the pubs mixed up!).

Not particularly salubrious inside, bit like a tired WMC. Very hot as well when we went. Nice big outside area though. The beer was excellent, about 6 independents ales. Easy to miss if in car.

If only he would stick to his opening times and keep his beer board and beers up to date..Also the quality of beers can be a bit iffy from time to time

Lovely little place, another downstairs pub that could easily be passed by. Radio was too loud but the barmaid was abviously bored as it was very quiet when I went in (early January). Six ales available and nice decor. I'd return.

(Like the Valley a few doors up Valley Road) at first an unpublike pub, with the basement bar below a large house that has a large outdoor drinking area out front. The bar itself is small but welcoming and combines a well mixed clientele including children and "lads groups" as well as older people and some live music. There is a big screen with football and around 5 pumps (e.g. Durham "Frostbite", Black Dog "Whitby Abbey Ale" and Great Newsome "Pricky Back Otchan"). Quiet and low-key but worth the trouble.
|
A likeable little bar, serving decent beer, although very quiet on my visit which is a bit of a worry.
|
About 5 ales and mostly interesting micros - a little bit of a detour from the town centre but well worth it and it's in the Good Beer Guide to boot.
|
The longest standing pub for good beer, ales in pretty good nick. Large projector type screen for footy, it's about 5 doors down from the 'must visit' Valley
|
good selection of regional ales, inc riggwelter for the brave. not town centre, but walking distance comfortable enough.
|
Definately worth a visit, as the real ales were fine and bar staff were happy enough.
There was nobody else in, so very quiet, although there was a big screen showing Gillingham in the play-offs, which, as RobCamra says, seems a little out of place
|
A small downstairs bar that nonetheless trades well on live live music and a retro entertainment theme (see the old show and music posters dotted around).
3 ales on during my visit (I forget exactly what) which tasted good. Food also available but didn't sample.
Was pretty quiet in the early evening, looks like a place that gets lively around 9pm. Worth seeking out.

We went to The Cellars whilst on holiday in Scarborough in November 08. We remembered a nice atmosphere from previous visits and having stayed in their self-catering flats above the pub. Also the real ale and food used to be good. However this time it was not to be. There was loud football on the TV. We had to ask loudly if they were doing any food (it was Sunday lunchtime) as we were hoping to have a roast. However, we were told by a middle-aged female (I don't know who she was or who she thought she was) that the chef was on holiday for the next two weeks. This got a few chuckles from the locals. As the lunch time was passing by, we left without having a drink as we were looking for food. As we were going through the door, some local decided to have the last laugh and told us to "Come back in a few weeks' time!" That started a good general giggle inside the pub. Pity that they have yobs and bar staff that don't make EVERYONE welcome. This establishment should have had a sign outside saying "only locals allowed in", at least we would have known what to expect. Luckily we knew that this was not the only pub in Scarborough having stayed in the town a few times before. And, as the week passed on, we found that The North Riding Hotel (CAMRA's town PoTY) was a very good and friendly pub.

Good range of real ales, well kept. The food is pretty good as well. This is a very small place, yet it still has live bands on. The big screen TV can be a bit obtrusive but this is due to the size of the pub. Call in the Valley as well further up Valley Road.

Stopped here recently on the way to The Valley. Both bars are on a street full of B & B's, and it looks as if you are walking into a seaside guest house. However, the service was friendly, and there were a few real ales on offer. The cider was Stowford Press.

Above average selection of beers, good quality too. Recommended.

I suggested this pub after a visit in April. Enjoyed beers from Black Sheep, Sharps and Yorkshire Dales breweries. Popular for food and music.
