Magor was holding a May Fair on our bank holiday Monday visit. The Golden Lion was at the heart of it all and as such, it was heaving. Inside seemed busy. We thought it might be quieter in the garden. But the small area for children was absolutely rammed. How the children's play frame and swings didn't collapse under the weight of so many kids, I'll never know! The Rev James was the only ale available. Clearly they didn't have the foresight to realise how busy it would be. Service was quick though, despite the crowds. Would like to visit again on a normal day to get a better impression.

The Golden Lion is a delightful pub in the beautiful welsh village of Magor. It has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere created by landlords Julie and James Dawson. The pub has an award winning first class resuarant which can well cater for the diaetary requirements of any customer. During the week we were staying in the Cardiff area we visited the Golden Lion on three occasions and each time we were equally impressed by the service, good food and excellent beer.

Had lunch before a football game against Newport County. Lovely pub, good food (all day breakfast excellent) and good choice of real ales. Friendly staff and great log fire (it was snowing outside)

I don't live locally which is a crying shame because I would definitely make this my local. It's a really nice pub with a truly welcoming atmosphere. It's situated in a beautiful setting of a square and appears to be the centre of the village. The meal was absolutely delightful and extremely difficult to select from the great menu. When I'm next back that way I'm going to make a bee-line for the Golden Lion and revisit the excellent experience we had.

Having moved into the Magor area in October last year, we undertook the high priority task of checking out our local pub, The Golden Lion. Both keen foodies, we embraced this task with some lip smacking relish!
Under the enthusiastic hand of the new hosts James and Julie Dawson, the menu has undergone a complete overhaul. The bar menu now comprises a wonderful selection from Tapas, good honest homemade shepherds pie to an excellent range of homemade burgers. Something for all tastes and budgets.
My wife was particularly delighted with the Spare ribs � and declared them without doubt the best she has ever eaten. No small compliment from someone who trained and worked alongside Albert Roux!
The restaurant menu and Specials board are particularly good. With a decent selection of dishes to suit all palates put together with an emphasis on fresh, good quality ingredients. Many of the starters (haggis, tagliatelle, Thai fish cakes to name only a few) are available as a main course � this is good news as we are able to indulge our fondness for the extraordinarily good haggis dish on offer.
We eat here at least once a week, often bringing friends and family and the standard of the food, presentation and service never disappoint. The emphasis on good quality fresh ingredients, a varied and contemporary menu along with the considerable skill of the new chef ensures that every meal is of the highest standard and a pleasure to devour. Subtle, tasteful changes to d�cor (and less subtle improvements to the cleaning!) have created a real country pub which reflects the character and flair of the hosts whilst retaining its village charm and appeal � something which so many pretentious so called �Gastro pubs� fail to achieve.
James and Julie are welcoming, affable hosts. Staff are attentive without being intrusive; each of them will readily try to accommodate any specific requirements. We have enjoyed the talent of the locals during many of the jamming music sessions and pitted our wits against CJ in the quiz. We saw in our First New Year as Magor residents at a wonderful evening at the Golden Lion complete with sumptuous buffet, live folk band and a piper to see in the New Year � all for under �20!
Our table is already booked for this year.
The exceptionally friendly service, superb food and relaxed surroundings make the whole experience of dining at the Golden Lion a real pleasure.

Popped in for Sunday lunch today. Though clearly very popular, as the restaurant was full, the service was still excellent and the food, delicious. The landlords, Julie and James, were very friendly and welcoming; which was mirrored in their staff. Sat in the garden for coffee afterwards, all in all an extremely pleasant afternoon - would happily have stayed longer, and will definitely return.

I had heard The Golden Lion was under new management so though we would book in for a meal. (June 2009) We were extremely surprised - what a difference! The new owners have done a huge amount of work to the place and turned it around significantly. The restaurant menu had a wide selection of starters & mains to choose from, including some specials on the board. (Also a pretty good wine list) It had a lovely atmosphere and we were made to feel most welcome. Later on in the evening we headed to the bar area where we were entertained by some local guys on their guitars who were very good! We will without doubt make this our local!

Under new ownership, now owned by scottish family, looking good now with a changed/improved menu!
Much better than the average score, I give it a 7!
