While the place looks great inside and out the beer is not the best. Only two real ales of which I think is poor for a Camra rated place. Should also be serving food, but when I tried at 6pm there was no service except for a small office Xmas group at the back. Disappointed.

Dropped by, two pumps, Bombadier and another, neither to our taste so we moved on

THAT'S BETTER, what a difference a year (or two) makes. Then, I didn't see much in the way of real ale on the bar - only keg crap. Today, Saturday, there were three hand-pumps offering a good choice of real-ale. Brentwood's Marvellous Maple Mild was not in the best condition - but drinkable nonetheless. The regular house beer S.A. from Brains was okay. While the festive ale was Wibblers Winter Wibble, an excellent 6%abv sweet and dark brew.
Good choice of family favourite meals at reasonable prices. Well cooked, tasty and good size portions. Although not busy with food orders our meals took longer to arrive than expected. The bar-girl/waitress did apologise and explained that the pub's kitchen is small and therefore has limited cooking capacity.
Both the two girls on bar duty were very pleasant, immediately cleaning vacant tables and interacting with the customers.
No reason not to return................yet.

Full of the local idiots again. What a shame!

I have stopped drinking here since the new manager took over a couple of months ago. It was the best pub in Stortford but it has gone down hill!
|
Nice pub - probably the best pub in Stortford.

Visited at lunchtime today. Two regular ales (incl Bombadier) and an excellent guest (Manns St Georges). Reasonable pub grub. Reasonable prices. Nice staff. Sat in beer garden in the sun - perfect. Will go back next time in BS.

Came back to Stortford last Sunday. Talk about "a new broom sweeps clean". Real Ale is back, no idiots in the bar, now Highly recommended, try it and show your CAMRA card and the Landlady will listen to your suggestions to her guest ales list. I will be back, sorry and all that.

I'm telling a lie, 2 handpumps have just appeared one of which produced a decent pint of Bombadier.

Went in recently, no sign of any difference and certainly no sign of any handpumps!

The Star was taken over by new management a few months ago and it is a much better place to drink now. Almost all the Chavs and Muppets that did drink there have gone back to the Black Lion where they belong. The food is much better and it seems a lot busier at lunchtimes. The staff are very friendly and apparently they are getting real ale very soon!

Large pub with several drinking areas, pool room, fruit machines, decent yet old fashioned decor and quick service. It's never been that busy when I've been in. Prices fairly high.

This could be a fantastic pub - full of original features, long rambling building, exposed original wooden beams but unfortunately it's a real ale desert populated by lager swilling chavs taking a break from the betting shop opposite. Plus the lager is about the most expensive in town. Still if you're looking for a fight on a Saturday night this will do until you go to Chicago's.
