Good Mini Beer Festival in progress at the mo,

We found the place by accident towards the end of a 15-hour journey. The staff really looked after my wife and I and our two small kids. No problem with bringing the kids in. The Mexican food is pretty spicy - great if you like it (I do), if you don't, best go for the other stuff on the menu. The Spitfire was tasty. All in all a real find, and if I lived closer it would be my local. And I can't give it higher praise than that.

Food good, but Ale quite over-priced I felt.

Popped in for lunch in the snow today. I've done that before. Two ales & two ciders on the hand pump. Service excellent, and friendly locals unlike the pub next door.

This pub has greatly improved since I last visited it 5 years ago. It has a good selection of real ales and mexican food. I enjoyed the westons cider. The only drawback is that the popular pub has become too expensive. Just under 10 for a burger and chips and 2 for a small cut of tea made with a tesco teabag.

After slogging around the local (waterlogged) pitch & putt for the previous 90 minutes, this 19th hole was warmly welcomed by our small party (me and my mate). Fairly typical "country" pub inside, dinner service was in full swing, and the smell of Mexican food inside a pub is a very pleasant one. 5 ales were on offer, including one of my favourites, Sharps Doombar. I elected to sample the Ansells Mild however, while my cohort plumped for the Harviestoun Old Engine Oil - mine was excellent and my accomplice reported the Old Engine Oil to be superb. A little in the pricy side however, with the round weighing in at a shade over 6. Seating to the front and the rear of the pub is available - worth seeking out, especially if you are looking for some decent tucker.

I have to say I do still love this pub and following my earlier comments, I can say that it is definitely getting back up to it's previous, glorious standards !
Now 5 real ales on. Not quite up to the peak of 8 back in the day - I still have the HIC (Hoodies Imbibing Champion) certificate to prove that I once drank my way along the bar in 1 session ! Nevertheless, 5 ain't bad and they are all well kept in my experience. They even had Doom Bar in there on my last visit....priceless ! Food is great and very plentiful. Service is always extremely friendly. Still no fruit machines etc...great ! (not that there's actually room to put one ) The only odd thing is the big screen on the wall which I've never actually seen working but seems completely out of place - especially given the low ceilings. Not really sure what they were thinking of when that went up.
Anyway, good to see the Hoodie making a return to greatness. Long may it continue.

This is without doubt the best pub in the Ashford area. A delightful village setting, consistently good ales (usually five on at any one time). Excellent food, which is plentiful. Friendly staff and generally fast service. I live on the outskirts of Ashford (on the Great Chart side), so I am pleased to refer to this pub as my 'local.

The Hoodener's Horse (formerly The Hooden Horse) is a testament to what can happen when a brewery doesn't understand it's clientele. Some years ago it was part of a small privately owned local chain (The Hooden on the Water & The Hooden on the Hill) and was always busy to the point of being overcrowded at times, especially at weekends. The reason for this was simple. 7 or 8 real ales which were constantly rotated, no draught lager, fantastic food and decent music (mostly Jazz and Blues) supplemented by the occasional live act. In other words, a real local success story. Then the owners sold out to a brewery and naturally, the first thing they did was to rip out all of the above. The result was predictable to everyone (except a brewery manager, I guess !) Now, after a number of changes of manager/owner (back in private hands, I think), it appears to be back to something approaching it's former self. Lager and Guinness are still on tap but so, thankfully, is proper beer - all well kept too ! Food is consistently good from a mexican based menu (another nod to the old regime) and service is always friendly. Maybe this is the start of another local success story. This writer certainly hopes so !

Quaint pub with five hand pumps and excellent menu. No pickled eggs, but you can't have everything.
