A classic in terms of decor , a stuffed otter apart - all distressed wood and tasteful real furnishings. The bar is small and cosy and at the heart of a fascinating area close to the docks. Food looked outstanding even if we did not partake - lentils, fennel and squid as a combo is very rarely not a winner. The beer selection is perhaps the one minor failing - Sharps are over represented and there was little to get the pulse racing.

So far this week this has been the best pub in Exeter, went here twice in one night. Good beers, Nice decor and surroundings, friendly customers and staff. Food looked good.

Popped in to see if it would be worth eating at this Good Beer Guide pub sometime in the future. Charged £3.70 for a pint of indifferent Bath Gem in pretty shabby surroundings. Don't think we'll bother to try the food. Friendly staff, though.

Lovely little place. Couldn't recommend enough. Beers on good form and nice staff.

Tremendous! A real wee gem worth seeking out a few minutes from the centre. Upmarket yet , excellent beer.

Fantastic pub, excellent food (well worth the money, this really is high class grub but with a home-made feel), great selection of spirits. Decor and atmosphere are relaxed. Moved to Devon from Oxfordshire a few weeks ago, this is the best pub we've been to down here yet.

Good range of well-kept beers. Food excellent, not cheap though. A bit of a London feel to it as befits many of the DFL inhabitants of the expensive locality who frequent it, a few of whom have brought their London frostiness with them to Devon.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends for a couple on the way back from the city centre...
This is cosy little pub a few minutes stroll from the city centre. Although there's not much room, we were able to get all 4 of us around a table and thoroughly enjoy ourselves playing a board game we had with us and leafing through the Encyclopaedia Britannica running along one wall (the highlight of the general pub tat lying around).
There were about 4 hand-pull ales on, but we stuck to Otter Bitter, which was on a good value 4-pint jug offer. It was very well kept, and my longest wait at the bar was while a clean jug was retrieved from the back. The staff were friendly and fitting the atmosphere well.
At first glance, Exeter city centre lacks good pubs. If you go looking, you can find gems like this one.

Quirky backstreet pub that is also a big food place. Not as pretentious as i thought it would be, can get busy. 7/10

Dropped in here on the walk back from Double Locks Hotel on Saturday - had seen it before on last visit to Exeter but it was shut. It has that slight kitted out "how a proper back-street boozer should look "feel - stripped wooden tables etc.
The pub's cat slept on the window ledge next to us throughout our visit. For some reason the two bar staff seemed to be pretending it was 1898 not 2008 with their banter / dress - no idea why........
Good range of beer - Branscome Branoc, Hook Norton Old Hooky plus another. The wife had some nice wine and she liked the atmosphere.
Food looked nice but was expensive - we ate elsewhere. Would definitely recommend a visit.
