I am not a local but when visiting family always pop in. This place is back on track, real effort seems to be going in to the pub again. Ales were very good and on my most recent visit busy in both bars. I hope it continues as so many pubs in the vicinity have closed

Fantastic local which has been used by me and my partner under past and previous landlords. Reading previous review i have to say its more an unhappy ex employee or customer with a bit of the hump as trust me its been a great local for years and continues to build on traditional family and community values. As anything in life you have to experience for yourself what a place is like and i guarantee its a good night out and also a good day

pub has gone down hill dramatically, last visited late 2013 and this was a lovely boozer. Came in for NYE when visiting but left due to Landlord being under the influence of drugs and finding cocaine in the toilets. This pub needs to be closed down or the a new landlord should be put in place, as i think 'Simon' ( i think that was his name) is running this place in to the ground! Should have reported to the police on the evening but was heading back home a few days later. Would never visit the pub again and have told friends and family to find another place to drink in. Such a shame as this had real potential when i visited last, the old landlord (Knocker/Knicker?? i think) was brilliant and its sad to see this lovely place go into such disrepair.

over the last few months the standard has deteriorated, not very clean, toilets smell, and flies everywhere, such a shame as it was a beautiful pub

Good place, except there is a local who thought i was naughty. i am NOT, and why was there a car parked in the beer garden? there is a black and white dog (i think his/her name is hugo) who visits now and again.
been disappointed on my last 2 visits as I can't abide Oakleaf beer and on both visits London P had not been deleivered - coincidence? Landlord still accomodating but pub sadly bare of customers on my visits.

superb pint of cornish knocker, good to see this pub getting busier and better again

First time visit for us. Very impressive frontatge (Portsmouth and Brighton United Breweries) - it really stands out in the street and must have been a wonderful sight in the "old days". Three beers on when we visited-we skipped the London Pride (it's an OK beer but it gets everywhere these days) so we went for Betty Stoggs and Oakleaf both of which were fine. The landlord came over and chatted to us and even though we dont wear football col, ours and he did, we soon got chatting about the beer and the forthcoming game. It turns out that most of the real ale is sold in the "Lounge Bar" but he brought ours through for us. There was a pool table in the "Public Bar" as well as darts and everything else you would expect to find in a good back-street boozer. We liked it and would probably go back again next time we go to Pompey.

The pub was great about 5 years ago when there was a great landlady lots of guest beers
getting busier again, has good a new friendly landlord and good beer, can only get better
Reopened yesterday, lets hope it gets better again
Closed again for refurbishment. Hopefully it might stay open a bit longer this time.
getting a bit better, 3 beers on had batemans rosey nosey but needs loving back to form
Popped in last evening to see how it was going. Only punter in there. Still only London Pride. Very sparse. No optics in the lounge bar...?? Not exactly the thriving corner local it used to be. Very sad.
re-opened today, only london pride on the ale front, looking a bit spartan, will report back shortly
There are workmen in there but difficult to tell at the mo if redecorating or gutting
closed at present
Now also does Suthwyk Ales' Old Dick. Fine drop!!
now has a new guv, nor, the beer quality is top notch, does mr. whiteheads cider as well

A real gem of a pub, with one of the best beer gardens in Portsmouth. Public bar more "spit and sawdust" than the more comfortable Lounge Bar, but equally welcoming and great atmosphere. Never hugely busy, but equally, rarely super quiet. Summer BBQs in the garden a particular pleasure. Very highly recommended.
Still a great pub, plenty of atmosphere and reasonable prices. Only used the Lounge, where everybody is welcome. Can't comment on public bar.

excellent backstreet pub with a good range of ales, lively public bar and a much more sedate lounge, lots of wood panneling and original features, with a nice enclosed garden, a nice find in the backstreets of southsea
