John Thompson Inn, Derbyback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Nice place. XXX is a very mild beer, but very nice. Decor/ambience of this place is very different from room to room. Friendly staff, nice location - would recommend.

Called in the John Thompson at lunchtime yesterday and I am delighted to report that it is good as ever and gets another perfect 10 from me again.
As well as being in a delightful rural location overlooking the Trent, it is spotlessly clean and comfortable, the staff are all very welcoming and efficient, the beef carvery has to be one of the best, if not the very best in the UK and the beer is excellent. JTS XXX and Gold were both available plus a guest, Doombar. I had two pints of Gold with my lunch and they were superb.

Came here for a Christening party as opposed to your normal pub visit. A large car park greets you with lodges to one side and the pub's brewery by the garden. Various rooms lead off from an L-shaped bar with plenty of tables to drink/eat at. Food seemed limited to sandwiches, jacket potatoes or carvery. Of the many ales that it brews I was disappointed that only two were on the bar. JTS XXX 4.1% okay but nothing special; JTS Gold 4.5% a much better light ale with a good flavour. There was actually a third hand pump, although I could not believe what it was dispensing - the atrocious Greene King Speckled Hen. Why? Maybe it's a cunning ploy to make their JTS beers taste a bit better in comparison.

The beer is always good here. Not really a young person's pub. Service is always efficient and friendly. Some nice local walks start here (leaflets in pub).

I cannot fault gillhalfpints review. The John Thompson is an absolute gem. Their excellent home brewed beers are not too expensive; the superb JT Gold (4.5% abv) costs just 2.40 a pint. The lunchtime beef carvery is one to die for. It has to be one of the BEST, not just in Derbyshire but in the in the WHOLE of the UK.
The staff are all friendly and efficient and are totally dedicated.
No hesitation 10/10.

What a wonderful place this is. A converted farmhouse made into a pub/restaurant and a real ale brewery too. Heaven, especially as the food was a brilliant carvery. A lot of wooden lodges were being put up round the carpark, so could be a good place to stay. The real ales were excellent, and the staff friendly.
