Swindon & North Wilts Cider pub of the year 3 years in succession!! Go Team Gluepot!!
Not much else to say, still a good little real ale pub relatively close to the station. Dog friendly, cyclist friendly, no fruit machines, juke boxes, or tellies.
For a real ale fan or a real cider this is well worth a visit.
As I was in Swindon on business, on the way home I called in The Glue Pot, intending to stay for a few pints. I did not feel at all welcome or comfortable. I had the distinct feeling JC did not like me.
I had one drink then went to Yates round the corner, where the manager made me feel very welcome. He also had some excellent beer on which was very reasonably priced and some decent food.
All the bar-staff are very pleasant and friendly and the beer is good but I have always found JC extremely rude.
When he's gone, I will start drinking there again
Ballymoss, apologies if you found the language offensive. Except for the last paragraph, that was a copy of a post on the landlords facebook page which has since been deleted.
JC went through a phase of swearing at and in front of customers and crashing glasses around, possibly due to his medication. I don't know.
I've been back a few times when visiting Swindon and really enjoyed it. He was chatty and really friendly, and also having a bit of banter with the bar-maid.
Hopefully, that is a sign that things are going a lot better for him.
A Saturday afternoon visit produced an enjoyable time with good service and one of the best choices of Hop Back beers and Downton guests I've seen in their (HP) pubs. Very helpful blackboard beer listing with descriptions. Historical location in the Great Western Railway village built for the workers at the adjacent loco works
No need for foul & abusive language regardless of what you might think of them.
Jonathan 'jc' Crisp 1 hr · Swindon · Customers are bloody stupid! "Sorry that beer will be off for about half an hour while we clean the line" "no problem, put two in and we'll wait, we're not in a hurry" "ok but I can't guarantee how long it will be" 2 minutes later "is our beer not ready yet?, guess we'll have something else then" cunts!
Charming, as the old saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, let someone else have a go
Went in there a few days ago and the beer and atmosphere were really good. I didn't think I would say this again but JC was both friendly and cheerful. He was having a bit of banter with a really lovely young lady, who apparently works there, which was nice to see.
There are probably a lot of things in JC's life I know nothing about. Hopefully, whatever was upsetting him is now in the past.
Well worth giving it another chance
I notice that it's advertised that they still do food. Strange after the Swindon Advertiser has named them as one of the places in Swindon that was given a 0 star rating and not able to sell hot food. It also still shows on Hop Backs own website that hot food is available. And yes, I agree that JC is a miserable person who hates being told when he is wrong. It's a shame really because I used to enjoy going in there but will not put up with a grumpy, rude bar manager.
Went in there a few days ago with some friends and JC was in a filthy mood. He practically threw our change at us. Really don't know what was going on there.
We didn't stay long
I was in Swindon, so popped in for a couple of beers. Didn't feel particularly welcome but the beer was good as always.
The place has been spruced up a bit with a new carpet. I forgot to ask JC, if he had started doing food again.
Nowadays, I much prefer The Hop Inn Old Town, next to the Arts Centre, or The Carter's Rest Wroughton, a short bus-ride from Swindon bus station on the no 49 or no 72. In both these venues, there is a much better selection of beers all in top condition and no grumpy idiot of a landlord swearing at or in front of customers and banging bottles and glasses around. This is something I find rather off-putting and one of the reasons I haven't used the Glue Pot for a while and am unlikely to do so in the future.
I have known a few alcoholics. All the signs seems to be there, bad temper, abruptness. If that is the case, JC probably shouldn't be working with alcohol.
For some years now, JC has been on medication. He also likes his beer and whiskey. Combined this probably explains the temper tantrums bottle crashing and really foul language customers are often treated to.
About time I started chipping in on BITE again, methinks! And what better place to start than here?
It is still one of the best real ale pubs in Swindon, beyond any shadow of a doubt. Yes JC can be found wanting on occasion, but now that he has found some new barstaff, his load should ease. It is frustrating if you have to wait to get served, & I'll not even try to defend the length of wait "lovejoy", but I've waited longer (or walked out) for worse service in lots of pubs, including 2 of the local 'spoons. My advice would be that, if you're happy to drink in a soulless barn of a place, but get served quicker & cheaper, then don't use the Gluepot. But also don't be moaning when there are no small, proper pubs left.
Still a good range of ales, limited only by brewery restrictions. Still probably the best range of ciders in town. Still a good locals/regulars atmosphere. And still worth the extra couple of minutes walk from the station to find it.
Brewers take note though, it needs sprucing up (a new carpet at least).
Thought I'd give this place another go having heard that the old miserable gits had finally moved on. The place still seriously needs a makeover. You get the impression that the place hasn't seen a lick of paint since before the smoking ban came into effect. Given its position within Swindon's Railway Village this could be by far the best pub in Swindon but that's probably as much the fault as the Hopback Brewery as it is it's management. Well, my visit lasted around an hour. 40 of those minutes were spent stood at the bar waiting to get served. Thankfully a pint had already been bought for me upon my arrival to meet some friends, but getting the second pint in was fruitless. One person serving, no more than 5 people at the bar when I approached, but absolutely no acknowledgement from the barman, he had no skills in knowing who to serve next, people approaching the bar new were getting served before people who'd been waiting a while and just as the final insult - after over half an hour of being ignored - the barman swans off to the toilet. At that point we gave up and left. What makes it even worse is the barman was volunteered some help behind the bar to which his response was 'no, I'm fine on my own thanks'. Seems as if someone could do with some basic bar and customer service training. The saving grace of the evening was that it was only a few minutes' walk to the local Wetherspoon's which served us almost immediately with some decent beers. Looks like we'll have to wait for another change of hands before returning here again.
Great Beer but....... Been a fairly regular visitor to this pub over the years and have experienced the highs and lows of the various landlords. The previous one (Keith?) was often a bit grumpy but at least you got served promptly and had pleasant staff on hand to cope with busy periods. However the present incumbent (JC?) Seems out of his depth. At first things definitely improved, prices dropped slightly, a generally better atmosphere reigned and the pub stated to get busy again. But recently, standards have dropped considerably, JC seems to be trying to run the bar single handedly and he simply can't cope. In this run up to Christmas, it really shouldn't be a surprise that a pub might get busy and that one person simply can't handle a busy pub. The result has been a very bad tempered and resentful (why?) JC. I've seen almost as many people walk out rather than endure a long wait to be served by a rude, swearing, bottle-crashing man. What's going on?
Tried The Glue Pot again recently. JC was quite friendly and chatty, more how I remember him. Last time I was in there, he was probably going through a bad patch, something I can identify with. The beer was excellent as always. On Mondays, They knock £0.50 off all pints of Hopback and Downton beers
I used to enjoy drinking here but on my last visit, I felt about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. I knew the bar-man JC before he started working there and always thought of him as a friend.I went in there Friday lunch-time 3 or 4 weeks ago and had ham egg and chips. Beyond asking me what I wanted and then asking me for money, I didn't get a word out of him. I didn't know anyone else in there and felt uncomfortable. When I left, he was out the front having a cigar. He did say goodbye but only after I said it first. Maybe he was having an off day but after that, I don't feel in any hurry to go back there
Good and ever changing beers. No frills. Friendly and convivial.
A square box of a place not the most aesthetic of places and a little run down but still one of a very few places that serve a proper pint in Swindon (possibly the only one in the "new" town). The Cotswold Wickwar Way was quite drinkable on this visit.

The Glue Pot has always been a source of a decent pint in Swindon. It went through a disappointing phase some time after HopBack took it over and stopped the poular free house philosophy which was a big shame... and the decline in clientele showed the effects. However, despite that, a couple of hardworking licensees later we have a pub that does the HopBack/Downton range with the occasional guest and manages to keep its head above water, although as Hodge says, it's not the cheapest. Today the HopBack Entire Stout was punctuated with Mauldon's Black Adder. You could do a lot worse!
Pub half empty last night (Friday) Entire stout an astonishing 3.30 a pint, you need deep pockets for a session here...
Great little pub with a great range of beers (Hop Back and guests). Very handy for the station and not that far out of the naff shopping centre. Shame about the old Railwayman's Institute across the road (boarded up and looking very sad) however this pub is well worth finding. A couple of benches outside when the weather is good but it's the beer you go for - and they do rolls!! Small bar area but probably the best pub in Swindon (certaily in this part of town).
After traipsing through Swindon trying to find a decent looking pub, we finally stumbled across the Glue Pot, and boy were we glad to find it. We were in the area for one night only, but really loved the place. The beers were excellent, the staff very friendly and welcoming to two strangers with a Sunday night in town to kill.
We loved it to bits, and would have stayed for much longer had it done food. The barman helpfully pointed us towards the few places we could get a meal.
Should I ever come back to Swindon, I know which pub I'll be heading to. The Glue Pot's a cracker.
Chavvy? What does that mean? The 'pot is anything but "chavvy", it's a proper real ale pub, which is probably why it was quiet when the previous comment was made. It's a harsh reality that real ale drinkers are not particularly good business. The Cricks tends to be busier than the Gluepot on a Sunday, but, in my experience, not for the rest of the week.
Visited this place on a Sunday night and it was empty yet chavvy The Cricketers across the square was heaving!! Very strange, as they serve decent beer and cider in the Gluepot. I see some people are moaning about the prices but three quid pints are becoming the norm these days, I know its not nice on the wallet but it could be worse, look at London. Its nearer 4 up there..... Hmmm. Unfortunately, after re-reading what I've just typed it looks like I've become resigned to the 3 pound pint.... Bloody hell, they've won.
I agree with you SW6, prices far too high now here, I now visit very infrequently, pub often empty at times you would think it would be full. 2.90 for the cheapest beer, I'll stick to the Sir Daniel now an d pay 1.96 thanks. Shame,.
Still a great little pub with the best selection of ciders in town. But it seems to be suffering at the moment, they can'tkeep their prices this high and survive, (in my opinion) Great quiz on a Thursday.
Been drinking here on and off since 1987, other pubs come and go, the Gluepot remains steadfastly unchanged and all the better for it. Fantastic pint of White Horse Brewery Black Horse Porter last night, so good I had to have 4! The usual 5 or 6 others from the Hopback stable also available. Still by far the only decent pub in Swindons dismal town 'centre', unless you like overpriced vertical drinking fizz parlours or depressing naer do well filled W*nkerspoons....
In the beginning there was Arkells and then Archers came and then Archers went. The Archers sign still hangs outside the Gluepot but it seems like there is some kind of link with Hop Back as four out of eight ales on were from them. This is s small, square, street corner local a little worn and run down but still a good pub serving excellent beer. Tried the Downton Hip Hip Hooray and the Shefford Dunstable Gaint - both of which were spot on. We often go to an alehouse for differing reasons but the primary one is to get a decent pint and the Glue Pot certainly delivers on that front..... and for foodies - they had cheese and onion rolls.

A cracking little pub. I'm new to Swindon and went to this pub on the recommendation of a mate at work. Barman, landlord and landlady all very friendly. On my 3 or 4 visits so far I've tried a range of the ales and without exception they were excellent. The quiz night on a Thursday well worth a visit.
One of the better pubs in Swindon which isn't saying much. The beer is good and the customers are friendly. It's a shame the bar staff are so miserable otherwise I'd go there more often. They often treat their customers like a nuisance which is a shame. The beer's good though.
One of Swindons better pubs. Small sitting area but lots of real ale.
Rather plain pub but with 8 ales on - mostly from the Hop Back brewery, of which the 'Medley of Hops' was very nice. I've been told this is one of the better pubs in Swindon & from the beer point of view it probably is.
Whatever you do, do not ask for a sampler of the beers in this pub! An impressive 8 real ales on tap in a pub in Swindon's historic Railway Village. A right old boozer of a pub with partitioned seating with a pretty varied crowd, 2 of the 3 kids near me were drinking the real ale so a big thumbs up for that. Pretty much an automatic entry for the Good Beer Guide.
Well said Jay_Cee_1961 and Hodge1.
I couldn't agree more
I don't care how miserable the landlord is provided he greats me and serves me with a decent well kept ale, and on and off I've been drinking in the Gloom for 20 years and have never had a bad pint yet. I think 'an ecunemical matter' should stick to pubs in Bristol where he belongs!
In response to the recent posting from "an_ecunemical_matter" I'd like to correct a few of his points, I was the "industrious and friendly" barman on this occasion, I took over the bar from Kieth the landlord at 2pm and he came back down to help me as soon as I called him when the initial rush came in from the Beer Fest, together we served a very busy afternoon, and enjoyed the company of a great many of the festival goers. If all "an_ecunemical_matter" can do is snipe at the landlord via this means frankly I hope it's another 2 and a half years before we see you again, leave a seat spare for those who are more objective, Mike & Becky aren't coming back so get over it!
I am currently enjoying Hopback's Red Ember, very moreish.
Since Keith and Karen took over, I have always had good and friendly service, no matter who is behind the bar. IMHO, that, was not always the case when Mike and Becky were there. Does anyone remember Dave the barman.
The beer is most certainly the best kept in Swindon
Cracking little pub, decent selection of beers. Been frequenting the place off and on for a year working in swindon, and it's the best pub I found. Well worth a visit
Returned yesterday after 2 and a half years self-imposed absence, and it was great to find not much has changed.
The barman was both industrious and friendly, the Honey Blonde and Crop Circle were both excellent and good value. The unsmiling and (still!) less than charismatic landord appeared only after the barman had dealt with the throng who piled in after the beer fest chucked out.
A pity politics and principles would preclude me from visiting again but honestly there's not much reason to miss this pub if in Swindon.
After a blustery and showery day, walking the Thames Path from the source at Thames Head to Cricklade, and catching the last bus, we had 30 minutes in hand. So I steered Carol to look at Brunel's model dwellings for the GWR workers, and coinicentally to the Glue Pot. I'd only been in once before, 4 years ago, but the welcome was the same, with a very satisfying pint of White Horse bitter.
Cracking little pub. Great selection of beers, fantastic Hopack and Downton ales, as well as an ever-varied range of guest ales, and some a fine selection of real ciders.
Always got a varied crowd with the local barflys, office workers, and the odd eccentric combining to make a cosy and warm atmosphere.
Great quiz on a Thursday (worth the 1 entry for the home-made sarnies!) and good value food at lunchtimes during the week.
Only realised I hadn't reviewed this place after a visit in August. Apart from the Hop Back they had White Horse beers. Excellent pub and worth a visit.
Varied choice of real ales, frequently changing guest ales supplementing the Hopback and Downton regulars with lager and cider too. Delightfully unpretentious pub menu, popular with office workers at lunchtime but also a locals pub. Outside seating at the front has views of the old railway village and inside has a traditional feel with high-backed pews for cosy chats. Friendly staff.
There are actually 5 Traditional Ciders, the all come from Westons.
Very good pub - nice and simple, ample seating. 8 real ales plus 4 real ciders, all mainly well-kept. Well worth seeking out if you're in Swindon. They are also selling their own HopBack and Chimera bottle-conditioned beers behind the beer, and they are both good value and excellent quality.
Worth noting that the pub now opens all day 1200-2300 except for Mondays when it opens at 1630 now for some reason, I got caught out last week. People keep moaning about the landlord being miserable, but I can't say I've noticed and in the evenings the pub is often packed.
Entire Stout has sadly come to an end for a while on the bar here, it is still available in bottles.
For regular updates on the current beer range I recommend joining the facebook group "Proppin' up the Glue Pot bar"
Entire Stout is back on the bar now for a limited period.
There is also a Facebook group "Proppin' up the Glue Pot bar" for fans of the GP
Traditional Cider selection now stands at 5 available all the time.
Good basic boozer, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Up to 6 Hopback/Downton beers and 2 guests on tap, good quality basic pub food at lunchtimes ie sausage beans chips etc, open 1200-2300, a oasis in a sea of rancid vertical drinking plastic bars and w*nkerspoons.
Good, old-fashioned (in the best sense of the phrase) pub, with an excellent selection of 8 Hopback and Downton beers. Nice pint of Elderquad. My vote for the best pub (by some way) in Swindon's Railway Village.
This is a great pub. It has a good choice of beers Hopback/Downton and for those of you who like cider there is a good choice as well. The best thing about this pub is that it is not one of the new modern pubs but a good old fashioned local pub.If you like a good beer then this is a good place to start.
I do enjoy this pub. Hopback is about more than just Summer Lightning.
Absolutely great pub, a real gem and a refreshing change from the local 'chain' pubs. Hop Back/ Downton beers are fantastic, always well-served, and in good condition. Staff are friendly and great sandwiches. If watching your team at swindon, this is a good place to go to avoid the crowds and get a decent beer.
Best thing about this pub is the selection of ales. Hopback Beers are always tip-top. On my Sun pm visit, this place was quiet (only two other customers at first), but still friendly and the beer was not lacking.
It's good to see more people reviewing pubs in Swindon, but I'm disappointed that they have all reviewed only this one. Still no matter. The range of ales seems (to a non ale man)seem to be the same as it ever was, as is the range of ciders, the place isn't as busy as it used to be on a Sunday but that is probably down to personality loyalty rather than a reflection on the pub. It's still a good pub even if the landlord is a Bristol rugby fan.
Having read reviews about this pub I feel that as a regular I should endorse the positive comments entered. I have been a regular here since the early 70's and this is and always has been a local real ale pub and in my opinion with the best kept beer in Swindon. This pub has been a tied house since I came to Swindon,Wessex, Archers and now Hopback except for a short periodin about 2001 when it was a free house.Whilst as a real ale drinker one would like to have kept it as a free house, the'Council' who own the premises decided on the security of a brewery for tenancy. I think we struck lucky with Hopback who produce an excellent product, The range of beers is first class with a good mixture of dark and light ales with occasional guest beers. The beer is kept exceptionally well by the present landlord,Keith and both he and his wife Karen having been in the trade for a number of years make the customer very welcome After over 30 years I still find this to be the most welcoming real ale pub around
I always feel welcome in this pub and the beer is always in good nick! Swindon's best....by a country(?)mile.
good call delete_button. That review is spot on. The gluepot is great pub. cant go wrong with a bit of the old organic vintage either, the memory eradicator.
I really don't understand some of the negative comments I've read about the Glue Pot on this site.
I've been drinking here for about six months and genuinely consider it to be the best pub in Swindon. I was mostly working abroad during the previous managements tenure, so I can't really comment about them.
However, Keith and Karen are always warm and relaxed, welcoming most of their customers by name, and creating a true community in the pub. The bar staff seem more like friends then bar staff, and, I've never experienced anything remotely like trouble in this pub. Maybe some drunken raised voices, but, hey, it's a pub!
The Glue Pot is situated in a beautiful and historic location by Swindon standards, and the beer is excellent. As it should be in a pub of this calibre.
Some of the cider can be a little dangerous though...
Since retuning to Swindon, I have been using the Glue Pot regularly for about 3-4 years. In all that time, I have never known any trouble in there. I have always found both Keith and Karen, the landlord and landlady very friendly and easy to get on with. Also Keith is highly enthusiastic about real ale and keeps his beers well, which is exactly what is needed in a CAMRA pub.
Some of the Glue Pot regulars, felt the previous owners Mike and Becky where unfairly evicted by Hopback. Though my understanding, is some of the customers (not me) complained to Hopback about their attitude. I suspect that is what ecunemical really has a problem with, though by his/her own admission he/she had been drinking for 10 hours prior to their visit. It is highly unlikely, he/she would have been in any state to know what was really going on. Maybe he/she/it should pluck up the courage to speak to Keith or Karen directly instead of taking the cowardly option of hiding behind a computer keyboard making snide remarks. They are both very approachable and I'm sure would be prepared to discuss any reasonable concerns.
Neil or Jason as he's known to his friends is working there part-time so that he can afford to go to college. He is young, has long hair and a beard but is intelligent and again very approachable and friendly.
Thank you for your balance, that is the object of BITE!!!!
But I am far from an "unknown assassin",indeed my own review was rather balanced also.....
I was alerted to the previous comment by a friend of mine. I don't usually bother to comment on pubs, if I don't like them I stop going - no need to make a fuss. However to add some balance to the unknown assassin I would like to say that I have always found the landlord to be very friendly, just the right sort for a real ale pub, the bar staff excellent, including 'Neil' and the beer without rival. Definitely the best pub in Swindon. I shall continue to vote with my feet and stay as regular a customer as finances allow! Keep up the good work.
There are indeed new hosts, and no it's not their fault, but they are not to the taste of some of the old regulars. Not damnation but observation. The beer range is as good as ever, they still have good ciders, I will take the word of someone who has tried it on the quality of the burgers. Still worth the extra 3 minutes from the town centre.
anonymous - 2 Oct 2007 12:11 |
Gem of a pub. Surprisingly near to the town centre's trendy wine-bar style pubs, and yet completely different from them. What a find! Trad pub atmosphere. Brilliant wide selection of real ales (mostly local-ish, i.e. from Downton). Nice burgers (though they ran out). And the most friendly, attentive, switched-on hosts you'll encounter anywhere. Someone complained that these guys are new; well, that's not their fault is it?!
I'm a visitor to Swindon, hailing from the Antipodies, I immigrated from blighty 12 years ago and still rate real ale at the top of the things I miss. I'm in town for a few days visiting some good friends of mine Jo & Tich and really wanted to have a beer in the Glue Pot as I've read a number of Robert Goddard's novels of which a number of his charachters used to drink the in Glue Pot. So the pub is glabbaly famous because of this. Had an image in my head of what the place looks like but as always entirely different. Top beer, highly rateable pub Cheers all
The new folks seem to be OK, if different, and are making an effort to keep things the same. Fortnightly open mic nights are back, but I'm not sure that they're the ones to do the quiz.
Atmosphere has gone downhill and it's now pretty easy to get a seat, but how far that's due to disaffected locals, the smoking ban, or the new guys, only time will tell.
It's all going to POT. Mike and Becky's last few days at the helm. I suppose we should give the new bosses a chance but it won't be the same. The Cricks might be a good substitute if things don't work out. This is another example of good landlords being forced out by accountants.
anonymous - 15 May 2007 20:42 |
Bad news. Mike and Becky and Jack the dog are off in May. Hopback should be ashamed of themselves. Can't say too much but if the brewery appreciated their tenants hard work and left them make decent living instead of milking them for all they're worth I think they'd be staying.
WHAT A PITY.
Splendid range of ales with a frendly and unique atmosphere. Don't have a bad thing to say about the place. Top marks
Haven't posted on this for about a year. Still a great pub. Quiz night Thursdays, just started an open mic spot (see posters for details). The brewery restricts the range of ales which is a bit of a shame, but what they do have are very well kept, still a good range of ciders (including Stowford Press), excellent food, Jack (the dog) is as ace as ever & the bosses and staff are good too. I've noticed a few odd reviews about Swindon pubs from people who appear to have got off the train for a quick pint, well here's my advice "take a couple of minutes longer and ask directions. Find the Gluepot."!!!
Haven't posted since suggesting this pub but my fears about it being taken over were completely unfounded. A great pub got even better. Becky and Mike are cracking hosts and the beer is excellent. Good range of continentals and whisky as well as the hopback/downtons/ciders and guests. Good bunch of locals, no TV, no jukebox.
Quiz is still hard but less focused on the works of William Shatner now that the legendary Dave has moved to pastures new.
Like Nigel Tuffnel's Marshall the rating for this pub should go up to 11!
In a desert for real ale this is a total oasis. 7 ale handpulls but the landlord has the noodle not to have all 7 on early in the week to keep the quality up. People (from a certain 5-lettered organisation!!)occasionally bitch about the range but I don't see what the problem is. Usually 5 or 6 from Hopback/Downton and rest from a monthly guest brewer(alas not chosen by the landlord.) Castle Rock,Brains,Youngs,Caledonian have recently featured. Go somewhere else if you want a wider range of VINEGAR cos you won't get it here!!!! All pints 2.00-2.30. Enormous portions of great value food lunchtime. The nature of the welcoming landlord and landlady is reflected in the good punters. No telly, bandit or jukebox. Nice hound whose friend call in to see him. Just a pub as it should be-10/10.
Plenty of well looked after beer (and cider), great atmosphere, good food - and plenty of it too. Oh and a nice pub dog too.
About as good as it gets if you like real ale.
anonymous - 28 Feb 2006 15:51 |
Couldn't agree more with anon. Great proper pub. If you're looking for sport on TV, loud music & "beautiful people" stay away. Good beer, great range of real cider, good food, good staff, I strongly recommend this pub.(good prices too)
Great pub. Good staff, excellent range of ales & ciders, good food, great atmosphere. It's run like o pub should be, there is plenty to learn here for other landlords. NUFF SAID!
I would like to point out that the pub has a nice range of rough ciders. As a matter of fact an elderly gentleman told me in the pub that it had actually been mainly a cider pub until the early sixties.
Be this true or not The Glue Pot is a great pub for fans of the traditional scrumpy cider.
Nice little pub, good beer. Very hard pub quiz.
An old man's pub in the best possible sense, nice location, small and very friendly, great place to while away the long summer days and in most cases nights. Kudos.
Despite being taken over by a brewery, the Glue Pot just seems to get better and better. The amount of guest ales is still 7 or 8 along with the usual Hopbacks of GFB, Summer Lightning, Entire etc. Lagers have also been added along with Stowford Press for the cider drinkers. A lick of paint and a new carpet have improved the look of the place but the atmosphere is as friendly and relaxed as ever, with the new landlord and lady being even more welcoming (as well as better chefs) With most beers at around the 1.90 mark and well looked after it is a superb place to spend time.
anonymous - 20 Aug 2004 12:11 |
Best real ale in pub in Swindon, a choice of 8 ales on the blackboard. Hopback ales make regular appearences. No loud music, no flashing lights, good beer at good prices
Al - 11 Aug 2004 10:08 |
Without a doubt the best pub for real ale in Swindon. Think freehouse in a corner shop and you've got the picture with a couple of tables outside for the summer. Unfortunately the lease is up for renewal and the landlord, who is a God in terms of real ale, is likely to be replaced by Hopback brewery. Continually changing Guest ales. Catch it while you still can.
