My husband and i have visited this pub several times during the last year and i must admit i have read the comments which have been posted above and i am i find them extremely hard to believe.
Our last visit to to The Romping Donkey was Sunday 10th April and as in the past we were greeted by very friendly faces.
We ordered our food i had a very nice Steak and Ale Pie which was served with creamy mashed potatoes carrots and peas my husband Phil had a Mixed Grill which came on an enormous plate which i must state was full and extremely good value for the price, and the children ordered 1 fish chips and mushy peas and 1 mushroom stogonoff (may i also state that the chips are homemade)
Everything was lovely and it is so nice to see a family run business where the landlady and landlord are working together smoothly with their family.
We look forward to our next visit which hopefully wont be too long away....keep up the good work guys and thankyou

Extremely disappointing. 3 of us visited for an evening meal while visiting the area. The place is run-down, dirty and unhygienic. When visiting the men's toilet it was so smelly that I had to hold my nose in order not to retch. I ordered a so-called 'Homemade' steak and ale pie. It was revolting and I had to leave most of it. I only persevered in order not to embarrass my friend who had taken there. My companions meals were slightly better but not of a standard which would cause you ever to repeat your visit to the pub. I was shocked that such a place still existed. It ought to be visited by a trading standards officer.

Visited in Aug 2008. We had great expectations which were sadly dissapointed. On the night we arrived the chef had just left for family reasons?! We were directed towards the basic menu they were offering. A few things put us off. The bar smelt unusaly badly of stale beer. I brew beer and know this bar was not clean. The beers on the special board were not available and the replacement served to the customer before was cloudy. My beers(2)were cloudy. The beer garden was littered with broken furniture and there was a broken go cart which should have been put out of reach. The ride-on 'metal horse' had rust holes which were a danger to small fingers. The grass was overgrown and the place generaly unkempt. This is a great shame as someone had invested in some excellent play equipment!! Did the chef elope with the gardener? All of these things gave us no confidence that the food was going to be enjoyable and we departed. The whole place looks like a potential gold mine if managed well.

Had a name change from the Red Lion the friendly locals informed us. The pub was in mid-refurbishment on our visit.
