Next up for us was the Mariners. I had high hopes and it didn't disappoint. There are 2 rooms - a popular front bar with loud music and a much quieter rear room with horse racing being shown. A selection of guitars suggested this is where live music possibly occurs. The barman was very friendly and knowledgeable. He was on his own, but doing a good job. Ales were Triple fff Goldfffinger, Saltaire Raspberry Blonde, Harveys Sussex Dark Mild, Mauldons Silver Adder, Greene King Abbot, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, Skinners Cornish Trawler, Woodfordes Nelson's Revenge, Oakham Bishop's Farewell & Acorn Barnsley Bitter. Ciders and perries are in the fridge behind the rear bar. But there are pumpclips in the rear bar. On Saturday afternoon, they had Westons Rosie's Pig Hand Brake (a very nice damson cider), Sandford Orchards Old Kirton & Mr Whiteheads Midnight Special, Novo Pyrus & Newton's Discovery. Recommended. But we were later to find an even better pub.

Excellent choice of beers. I had a porter from White Horse brewery. Only gripe was a lack of locally brewed beers

very good 2 roomed pub,8 beers on,great pint of salopian darwins origin.well worth a visit.

The nicest pub we found in Great Yarmouth, and so we passed several very enjoyable evenings there.
There was an interesting selection of beers, all in good condition and very professionally served.
Fascinating ornaments, artefacts, pictures etc. are dotted about the place too.

Along with the St.Johns Head on North Quay (and now the Barking Smack on the seafront) this pub makes a visit to Grt Yarmouth for beers worth while. A great selection of 8 real ales served in a boisterous but friendly bar.

The Mariners Tavern was probably the best pub we visited whilst in Great Yarmouth if what you are after is a traditional old style pub serving a very good range of cask ales and ciders. Unassuming but pleasant enough red brick and flint exterior, which hides a very pleasant two room interior either side of the central serving area . Twelve hand pumps on the bar, six either side of the central pillar. These dispense a constantly changing range of local and regional brewery beers and all the local brewery beers we tried were in good nick. All in all, a top notch traditional ale pub, and not to be missed when visiting Great Yarmouth.

Superb pub, if the rest closed in Great Yarmouth I'd be glad to keep this one open!!

Visited on a wet Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed a very pleasant time in there. Plenty of Ales available, looked like 7 or 8 and the beers I had were all in good nick. Chatty locals, friendly barstaff, it was certainly the best pub I went in to in Gt Yarmouth.

Good beer, great staff with a mixed and friendly bunch of regulars, not only that they put up with me when on leave, what more could you ask for (apart from some frank zappa on the juke box).

Had a quick visit this weekend during a Bowls Tour in the area. Wished I had longer! 8 ales on tap and 3 ciders - mostly local but some from further afield. Had several halves to try the quality - all superb! An ale lovers paradise! Toilets currently being refurbished, and to a very high standard, by the family running the place. Several themed festivals each year when they have 16 or so ales and 6 ciders. Of the beaten track, so few tourists find it - unlike the Troll Cart! Highly recommended.

Went there twice in mid-August whilst holidaying in the area. Thanks to Sean the guv'nor for his hospitality. Some very good ales on offer, lots of choice. An excellent pub and any one that has such a passion for real ale plus scampi or bacon flavoured fries gets a big thumbs up from me.

Visited at end of August. Excellent selection of real ales. owners/staff very friendly and helpful. Best pub in Yarmouth without a doubt.

This is easily the best real ale pub in Great Yarmouth, six beers at least in top notch order. The service was friendly and care was taken in topping up my pint.A cosy library feel to this pub that was very relaxing, I had several pubs to do and as this was my first i had to shake off a desire to curl up and stay ( very tempting).Later on after a pint in the John's Head I passed by and the barman was having a fag , he enquired if I needed directions and went out of his way to guide me to my next pub, whilst this was happening the landlady joined in the conversation and was a real delight, I cannot wait to revisit!

Traditional friendly family run pub. Beer available as listed below by Rod_Harigo. Good to see local three local Green Jack beers being supported. This was included in our recent crawl as in GBG and part of Woodfordes Ale Trail. Good sounds and selections from the jukebox whilst we were here. It seemed a well supported community pub with quite a chat going on around the bar area.

Visited here on a Sunday early evening for a beer on the way back to the station. Traditional style pub with a great range of ale: Lurcher, Summer Dream, Orange Wheat, Wherry, Moorlands Original, St. Edmunds, Abbott, two ciders and a perry. Would've liked to have spent longer here but had to get back to the station. Worth a visit for any real ale fan. Apparently the recently re-opened Mariner's Compass in Gorleston is its new siter pub (and also well worth a visit).

Any pub that serves ales entitled Granny Wouldn't Like It and Headcracker gets my vote

First found this pub last year in the Good Beer Guide and decided to visit again at the weekend after the Great Yarmouth Beer Festival session finished. To my surprise they were having their own Scottish Themed Beer festival with a descent rock band in the main bar. It's not the place to bring the family but great for a descent pint normally sourced from micros local and far away. Staff very friendly and collecting for childrens charity while festival was going on.

This pub has had its ups and downs. I was unlucky enough to visit a few years ago when it was a run-down dump with no real ale and no customers. Returned a few days ago to find it transformed. New owners have put in carpets, comfy chairs and a real fire to create a really pleasant ambience. More importantly there are 5 or 6 real ales served in excellent condition ( as well as a vast selection of bottled continental beers for those who like that kind of thing). The pub was very busy, obviously with loyal regulars, and deservedly so.

Enjoyed a visit to this friendly pub in October last year. There was a good real ale selection available, and comfy sofa seating. Enjoyed wandering round, and there were interesting paintings on the walls.
