really not very nice. went in to watch some football and it was full of smelly man-children. cheap beer and newcastle brown ale helps but the shifty manager/owner doesnt. heard he might of gone so maybe it'll be useable eventually

My least favourite pub in the area. Little or no atmosphere except for the live music on a thursdays. Boring pub which feels cold and unloved.

Phil, the manager of the Walpole Arms is the most unprofessional, egomaniac I have ever known. He booked our band well in advance of the gig date (19th July 2008). We turned up having come up from as far as Gravesend. Phil wasn't there but the doorman/duty manager was and had no idea we were booked. He phoned this Phil, who insisted he cancelled us (which he didn't) then went on to ask what music we played and how much we charged and denied ever booking us! A terrible manager with no social skills! Shame as he would have lost out on a lot of beer money as we had a big crowd coming down. (When we got there, there was about 4 people in the pub).

strange atmosphere in here, thursday night jam nights always a treat though

I didnt realise the pub had a new manager. This is probably a good thing as the last manager always insisted I have a loyalty card which I didnt want (nice enough guy but about 12 years old). Great great food and such big portions for sandwiches (well it used to be, havent eaten there since new management). Always nice for a meet-up. It does lack a bit in atmosphere but is well kept and quite neutral in that it is easy to go there for different occassions (eg, grouo night out, alone, with partner)

Polish night was scary, I didnt realise people still danced like that and the music was worse than anything I've ever heard. Ever.
However, cant fault the people, they were lovely and the atmosphere was cool, they just need to raise the bar up about a foot so it's the right height, I cant be dealing with these low bars.

Much improved since Maggie - the new Manager took over at Christmas, better atmosphere i think she will do well.
|
Used to be a bit rough, seems better now. Although they could upgrade the bar maids, I think they are on commission to not get you drinks.
I second the comment about the kids, thank god!

The Thai food is great! You get a huuuuuge plate for under a fiver, and it's so tasty, better than Thailand restaurant, I reckon. The waiter guy is really friendly as well. However, the Walpole gets a bit bizarre after 9pm - it turns into a mini-club... So you'll be sitting there eating your nice food in what was a restaurant setting, then this guy who looks like a convicted paedophile sits in this box in the corner of the pub and starts playing early 90's rave music.... weird, but strangely not offputting. Don't even think about going at the weekend though, it's chock-a-block. Ooh and they do Hoegaarden, which my boyfriend is pleased about.
|
Thank god they sorted out the kids situation, I swear I've seen ten year olds staggering out of the Walpole in the past.
Thai food is fanastic, booze is reasonably priced and the staff usually serve with a smile.
One small complaint was how loud the live music was, I couldnt hear anything my mate was saying while the guy on stage was droning on for a good twenty minutes.
Other than that much improved, a decent New Cross pub.

this place is great, music is good, atmosphere is really nice. good people in here. drink is reasonable, only thing trying to get served on a friday or saturday is murder especially if you are a female, the bar maids have a tendency to go to the blokes first but other than that a great night out and th4e best thing is it dont shut til 2!

hello its brendan the manager, thanks for your comments right where should i start, well we sacked the nanny so no more creche and every one is now over 19 as ID must be shown, the air conditioning has now been replaced with one that works, also the sound system and DJ'S have been changed...regarding trouble thankfully we have had no trouble since these changes have been in operation, there is now a nice mellow atmosphere with candle lit tables and new pleasant bar staff...so thank you for all your comments good and bad as it helps us to improve on our all ready great pub.!!
If there is anything you would like to discuss with the manager he is always around so just pop in and ask for Brendan.
|
I used to go there on a weekend before it turned into a bloody creche! nowadays the average age in there is about 14. I feel old and I'm only 18 myself! Plus, crap air con, even worse sound system and the DJs...no comment.
|
I heard a rumour its gone over 21's now, is this true?
|
great place if you are a burberry sporting, hackett wearing CHAV.
don't go near this place on a weekend if you want to come out with all limbs intact.
the thai food isn't bad though!

This used to be an honest Irish boozer with cabbage and bacon on St Patricks Day, live music and a blinding array of whiskies and brandies. Now it's full of student trendies pretending to be poor. All that's left is the great tile work inside. Poor old Tipperary Tony. Avoid - unless you are a student trendy

Thai food is truly great, but they are wasted on that venue. If they sorted out the toilets, got a better sound system, and while they were at it some better DJs and some air conditioning it might, just might be worth going into again. Otherwise a struggle to hold a conversation over too-loud, distorted house music on a week-day night. Didn't they used to have live bands at one point. What happened there then? Used to be quite nice. Now its not.

The great food & friendly bar staff are hampered by a very cheap & easily distorted sound system. If they sort that out it could be a great place.

the walpole arms is a quality night out! The music is blaring the beers are flowing and everyone crams onto the small dance floor to party the night away. Can get very packed, mainly young ppl. They also sell snake bite! woo hoo the only bad thing is the lack of air conditioning.

Amazing thai food!!! The Pad thai is one of the best in London>>>fresh REAL (no fake reconstituted chicken) ingredients and large servings for a very reasonable price with 10% for students.

This is a pukka bar to meet up in before you go clubbing, i always meet in here before i go to the venue, nice bird behind the bar, dj that mixes of a weekend, chilkled out candle lit tables, or stalls round the bar, reminds me of an amsterdam smokin cafe with its chilled out warm stones atmosphere. 100% go there youll love it, the geezer below is chatting bollocks !!!

Great looking pub, nice tiles on the wall, outside seating (if you can bear the New Cross traffic)... Interesting mix of clientele that accurately reflects local residents. But why the loud music? Spoils an otherwise fine pub.

An awful, awful pub with music that is far too load (old disco). Poor selection of beers. And attracts the worst sort of clientele. It should have stayed an old mans pub. It had potential just after it refurbished with decent Thai food and a mellow atmosphere. Whoever has taken it over has completely ruined it. Is New Cross turning into Falaraki or what?
