user reviews of Marquis of Lorne, Gillingham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Are there two Marquis of Lorne pubs near the Black Lion in Gillingham? I ask because the fatigued old pit I went in the other day was certainly nothing like the reviews below.
Clientelle was mainly old/ mutated/ hammered, ales on offer numbered one (a Christmas ale - in February), interior was in severe need of updating and the side bar was being used mainly as a storage area for excess stock and beermats.
The one plus was the amusing Action Man and Hitler dolls adorning the shelves; almost worth the agony of drinking there. At least the local yoof stay well away as there's no pint smashing the place up when it wont be noticed.

'Popped in' with a friend for the first time yesterday for a quick drink. Left about 5 hours and several pints later! Excellent, traditional pub with character and welcoming landlady. - all are too rare nowadays. I don't live particularly close but will definitely be back - next week!

Good old pub with a good character. Great real ales. no chavs. and very welcome. cant make it often but when I do I really enjoy the place.

I live quite far out of town so go to lots of pubs in this area. There some good ones and this is one of them.

Not far from train station opposite Black lion sports center.

I like drinking here alot some places can be a bit clicky and unwelcoming nowdays but not the Marquis of lorne. I always get a friendly welcome from the land lord and find it very easy going.

The beer is amoungst the best iv had round Medway. there is also a large range of local ciders served strait from the barrel. good schnapps collection too. There is usually some kind of chilli product on offer.

Pool table is now gone so there is more seats. There is a dart board now though.

As far as we could tell, this is the only decent, proper pub in Gillingham. Very friendly landlord and staff. Their mission is to get this pub working the proper way through serving great beer with a smile and friendly athmosphere.

They display four proper ales of good quality and reasonable prices. If they stick to this concept it shouldn't be too difficult to succeed in Gillingham...

Following on from the last post of which I totally agree this is a genuine locals pub in Gillingham near the high street and bus stop close by and easy access to train station so no excuse not to come over and give the pub a go!!
Good beer selection including 4 ales and all at very reasonable prices or even better for the current market.
TV up on the wall for sporting events, pool table and friendly atmosphere with a good natured landlord who knows whats what in the pub trade and is always welcoming.
A real pub in an age when real pubs are dying so come and give it your support and dont let the great English Pub Die!!

I went in the marquis on a recommendation from a friend as it has a new landlord. I was very happily greeted by the landlord ( Jay Sandmann from the Man of kent in Rochester i was later to find out whilst chatting )when i stepped inside the old decor before was dowdy & dated from what i remember but it has had a face lift inside, very nice, bright, airy, a good alround feel to the place. It has a good selection of 4 real ales which when drunk are the best & cleanest i think i have drank in the Medway towns for many a year & at very good prices for the best quality, its an all round good friendly pub & the landlord want to maintain the old pub feel to the place, bravo sir you have done well so far & not a chav in site or stella may i add. WELL WORTH A VISIT WHEN YOUR IN THE AREA. :)

Situated next door to the rather lifeless Black Lion pub, is the Marquee Of Lorne. I paid a late morning/early afternoon visit last Wednesday (23 April) and was surprised to encounter a fairly lively and dare I say it, buzzing and vibrant local. Certainly, the conversations I over heard amongst the regulars was basic and the language somewhat unsavoury, yet it was pleasing to find myself in a pub with a bit of purpose and not one which is merely rotting away - as is the case with so many other 'locals' in towns such as Gillingham. The choice at the bar was naturally mainstream, though the one ale on offer (Bombardier) was expertly poured by the overly friendly landlord and was a snip at 2.30. The layout is rather basic and the front-bar a little pokey. At the back of the pub is a pool table, a second bar, though be it, redundant, and the gents. In fact, the only major gripe I had on my visit was the door to the toilets being open. Watching men pee (and fart!) is hardly appropriate when trying to sup a pint. All in all, this isn't wonderful pub, though it is functional, currently has a life and I personally feel that places like this should be visited before they're gone for good.
