Saturday night doesn't show this pub in the best light I'm sure but it was still pretty poor. As in almost every pub we visited this day, Tring beers were on tap but the plus points pretty much end there. A testosterone fuelled crowd and a bad reaction to our Czech companion's complaint that a half of Budvar wasn't up to scratch hardly complies with a 'customer is always right' mentality.

Well to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. We hadn't been here for years. Not since the days when you could buy some decent grass and watch the footie. They seem to have outed most of the old clientelle and thank god for that. It's actually quite civilized in there now. The drinks, service and atmosphere were better than most other pubs in Berkhamsted and they seem to have poached some of the Rising Sun regulars seeking refuge from the barking dogs, children and generally odd people that cram themselves into that tiny little place these days. And I can't blame them.

The George has all the hallmarks of a pub that has tried to turn itself into a trendy bar and failed. Consequently its now a pretty poor bar with, I suspect, all the characters and faults that made it fail as a pub. Not exactly dying on its arse but I reckon its fairly close. So much more could be made of the property with a little investment but I fear the only thing that would be viable would be a restaurant.

Put a trendy new sign up outside a few months back but its still the same smoky place inside. Always seems to have police and/or ambulances outside it most Friday & Saturday nights. Friendly?

Fantastic friendly pub. Definately a great place to go for a tequilla binge. Plenty of people join in and if simon from the coment below joins an amusing chaos ensues

Old Town pub with a loyal band of followers, run by Mark and Catherine. Pedigree, ESB, lagers, Scrumpy Jack. Atmosphere usually excellent with antipodean bar staff and various promotions/themes. Large screen in one bar for sport. Gets pretty smoky. Good local, find out anything about the towm in here and make some new friends.
