Quite busy on our recent visit, friendly locals, pleasant & helpful barmaids, 7 ales on. I indulged in Rat Brewery 'White Rat' [decent pint] & Riverhead Brewery 'Lemon Sherbet' [nice & tasty].

They have done a great job with the pub after it had been a scruffy mess for years.
|
Now re-opened, cosy pub with comfortable seating, helpful barman. 7 ales on, I had Wigan Brewhouse 'Back to Back' [a decent ale].

Undergoing a very major refurbishment to bring back its Victorian splendour

Decent enough pub, locals friendly, smoking area at rear, the Hobgoblin was in fine fettle.

Had a great pint of Marston’s Porter here, thoroughly recommend this, best pint I had all day by far. The locals here really are spoiled, great ales sold at low prices. The Pub itself was what I imagine a traditional Northern Pub to be, no frills but friendly staff and good ale. Unfortunately, I left if too late to try this pub and had to catch a train so only had time for 1 pint. However, I was happy to find that my train had a half hour delay, time for me to nip back over the road and have another pint of Porter. Happy days.

Popped in for a swifty whilst waiting for a train. Only one other in the pub. Friendly enough, clean, beer good. Would go back. 2 ale choices available today.

Marstons pub opposite North Western station, that was packed on our Saturday evening visit. There are multiple rooms, plus a corridor complete with access to the bar. All rooms have a traditional feel. Only 2 ales were available - Banks's Original & Wychwood Hobgoblin. Other more 'interesting' Marstons beers were available including Dirty Tackle & Tizzie Wizzie. But it seemed these had all run out and not been replaced. Could be better with a better range of ales. But handy for the station.

went in around 1600hrs mid week and tried the ringwool old thumper which was excellent. the pub was very quiet only me and 3 other in the pub. when i was last in 10 years ago and used every other week for a pint it used to be quiet busy. pity it is quiet pub now because the ale excellent

At the moment the lease is up for grabs, due to the previous tenants being given notice (rumoured to be due to the number of guest beers not being to the brewery's liking). Present "couple" work for a holding company, and the place has improved and is spotless. Marston's beer in evidence but well kept at present. Couldnt be handier for the Railway station, give it a visit on the way to the Wigan Beer festival March 4th to 6th!

Lovely pub with well kept ales. I was on holiday nearby when I visited Wigan. I very much liked the town in general and particularly some of its pubs. This has to be one of my favourite pubs in England, and I've supped in a few. Give it a look - you shouldn't be disappointed.

No... just no.. not nice.. not friendly.. just a no place. Avoid.
|
I find this pub a bit rough-and-ready these days, and don't visit as often as I did. The beer can be hit-and-miss as well, though quite competitively priced for the town centre.
|
Very friendly, good beer choice and has original interior with tiled floor. Cosy feel and handy for North Western station.
|
Visited on a cold Sunday afternoon. Was greeted with a warm welcome, a choice of five real ales and some good value sandwiches. A friendly pub with ale - I tried the George Wright 'Roman Black Ale' - in excellent condition. Well worth a visit!

This is a nice pub with a classic unspoilt interior- mosaic floor, several rooms etc. But in terms of its beer it's on the slide, there are about 8 handpumps but only 2 ever seem to be working. Also seems to be attracting dubious types from the grotty pubs up the road. Food used to be good and truly excellent value- about 3 for sausage and mash. I haven't tried it for a while, so not sure if this is still the case. It's definitely worth a visit, but I hope it can pick up again soon.

Friendly pub between the two railway stations. Had Timothy taylor (poor) lancaster bomber (ok) and bombadier (mmm, fab) on todays visit.
|
Nice little pub; directly opposite Wigan North Western station. Good selection of real ales, friendly staff. Popped in before a Wigan Athletic match, wearing away colours. No hassle, felt very comfortable.
