Yes, I remember coming here many years ago on a piss up. I liked it here, but maybe thats because I was pretty drunk. It was pretty bland from memory.

Gospoda is a Proto-Slavic name for Inn or diner. Although this is totally irrelevant as it is now called The Royal .
|
This pub is now called The Royal and has its own local trade.
|
Anybody want it? I hear it's up for sale again .
|
This pub has now been closed, reopened as the 'Royal'

Real Ales are now available. 3 of them at least.
|
Now re-opened as The Royal (!!??!!) No real ale that I could see although I'm told they are advertising it. At least it is open and trading so it could improve.

I am delighted to report that this diabolical venue has been shut-down by the powers that be with it's licence revoked. Considering the noise, violence, and general dubiousness that this place inflicted upon Reading it was a no-brainer really. Although granted the majority of Polish dregs that frequented it were equally sans the grey matter other than the Neanderthal level IQ required to rustle benefits and increase the local crime figures. One can only hope their next establishment of choice is a bar in Heathrow or Gatwick on a permanent outbound flight...

Totally gone to pot. When it first opened it was like a breath of fresh air but GOK how it stays open these days.
|
This used to be the Battle Inn, but it is now a polish pub for polish migrants that come into reading for an evening gathering, not much cop if you cant speak the language as they dont speak yours most of the time,
|
On our visit there was no draught beer. There were no other customers except a few girls and a guy. the girls went off with men who came in. This is a knocking shop for prostitution.

Avoid like the plague.

Used this a couple of times for food at quiet times (early midweek eves) and was impressed ... portions are huge, especially meat content, and authentic (try the buckwheat pancake filled with "goulash" or the Golbaki) ... bit pricey for pub grub but OK value considering, and until some enterprising person opens a proper Polish restaurant off the Oxxie Road ! Really friendly crowd when it gets busy, I'm Hungarian but love the Poles, but gets a bit intimidating for "oldies" like me late Friday / Sat nites when you can hear the music blaring and bouncers outside ? Obviously not a "real ale pub" but full marks for what it does. and long may it survive ...

If there is any thing below Zerooooo Rate, I would not hesitate to say it. It was my first time in my life to go to a such unsafe, unsecured, unprofessional, dodgy, disrespectful place like this, be aware that you can be assaulted in this place if you complain about the very bad service provided, my personal advise that if you have any problem there just leave and go specially if you have ladies with you as the door men are not professional and they would just fight with you. Door men are just there to guard the bad attitude from drunk teenagers towards people there.Really can not find words to describe how horrible was the place and staff unprofessional attitude ( door men did not even have licences show).

This pub is in a VERY dodgy area of the town so this was not a good start. High prices and poor decor. Could do far better.

Got to agree with Fat beer Badger - the barmaids are VERY easy on the eye! Pub is really geared up to selling fizzy eurolager - and some very exotic cocktails. I suspect they make half of the latter up as they go.
Not eaten there but the portions look IMMENSE. Don't go there if you are looking for a light snack. Ditto if you are in a hurry - they make & cook food properly so 30 - 45 mins wait is not unknown.
Zywiec is now sold by the pint. Asking the staff to top up your glass will cause a raised eyebrow but they'll do it with a smile. And anyway, with barmaids like that who's going to quibble about a missing sip of beer.
I hope the owners make a go of it. With the demise of the Polish club in Reading it is the natural spot for Poles to gravitate towards. Plenty of other E. Europeans as well though, and bizarrely a strong Brazilian contingent.
Na zdrovya! Do dupe!

been there for saturday night disco, great fun, good crowd, would recommend. Interesting DJ .
|
Really a restaurant but it does have a large bar as well, being an ex-pub I think. Nicely done out in what I imagine is authentic Polish style. Guinness, Fosters, Stella and Strongbow along with Polish beers.

Visited for a Sunday evening meal today. An incredible transformation from its previous incarnation... really tastefully decorated, and felt like a cosy place to sit out the torrential August rain. Food was really quite good expecially the starter (sauerkraut and sausage stew thing). Beer range is a bit disappointing - only Zyweic on tap (sold by the half litre rather than pint) alongside the usual stellas and guinnesses. But as a venue, good... 7 out of 10 from me and I'll go back.

Fittest Barmaid In Reading, Full Stop!!

Visited Gospoda on Saturday for a change of scenery:
Not the smartest part of town, nor the greatest looking building...BUT the friendliness & quality f service / food was a lesson to many of our other so-called gastro pubs.
Don't expect anything fancy, but do expect a good hefty serving of filling, tasty food, Also be prepared to wait, because little if anything goes near a microwave.
Thumbs up for what it is; not my kind of pub, but faultless in their service approach and food standards. (IMO).

You wouldn't recognise it from it days as the Battle - completely reformed interior, very nice. Polish TV and music, with Polish food available.
A little disappointed with the beer range though - it's all the same Polish fizzy pop you can buy in Weatherspoons. Was expecting something a little more unusual to be offered, really. Worth trying once or twice.
|
Okay, now visited. Bit of a threatening start - all windows closed and doors shut. But once in, greeted by a wall of warmth and pleasant modern decor (all polished wooden floors and shiny fixtures). Staff and other drinkers (mostly Polish) very nice and accommodating, even though we couldn't pronounce any of the items on the menu. Food fresh, hearty and tasty. At least one Polish beer on draught and lots of bottles of various Polish beers in the fridges. Wide selection of more common British beers (stella etc) and spirits. Was expecting lots of different Polish vodkas but only spotted Wyborowksa. Basically yeah we had a good night :)

This is what used to be the Battle, which closed, and is now apparently being transformed into a Polish bar. Gospoda means 'restaurant'. Quite eagerly awaited actually - if they get it right then they'll make a packet, both from West Reading's sizeable Polish community and the native Brits (Reading's got quite a varied collection of drinking spots and the locals seem to like diversity in their watering holes).
