Went in here for the first time on Monday for the pub quiz. The pub itself is OK (6/10) although the service when I arrived was DIRE!!!

Anyway, there were good-ish beers on (the Scrum Down helped me forget England's showing in the RWC!) and service improved once the quiz started.
This was the first pub quiz for me in years and I enjoyed it thorougly! £1 per person - I was Nobby No-Mates on my own but still came 5th out of 15.

Quiz recommended, pub was OK but, like everywhere in Romford, approach with caution (especially, I would think,m on Fridays and Saturdays!)!

Walked into this joint and was full of ruffians- was very wary...anyway, so ordered a pint of Ringwood and then.....KICK OFF!! Drunken scumbag with ripped T-shirt had a pop at a very polite and nice bouncer and that was it !!!! PUNCH UP TIME....we bailed out of course not even bothering to pay for the pints...all that's bad about Britain but in Romford...the whole place is bad....what a total dump

Love it in here, nice staff and good prices. gets very busy on a weekend and you always feel safe, which for anyone that knows Romford will agree is a good thing.

I've been a regular at this pub for about 8 years now, and the huge, rude bouncer on the door still doesn't acknowledge me when I say hello.
As for the actual pub itself...well...it's alright. That's all you can say really.
The barstaff seem to be handpicked from the prefects at Confusion school (about ten of them over the years have had to ask me what Brandy is), however they do work their hinies off on a Friday/Saturday night.
It's always a bit grubby in here, (don't even think of leaning on the bar), and seems to have lost a bit of it's charm with the re-vamp. Food is also pretty terrible, mixed-up orders are a common occurance, but hey-ho, it's better than the filth chip shop next door.
All in all, don't expect much more than a cheap pint, dirty elbows and some bloke called Dave pinching your arse.

Positives -
- Cheap drinks and food
- Big smoking garden
- Quite a bit of indoor seating

Negatives -
- Very rude doorstaff, who will practically throw your drink away to get you out of the pub way before closing
- Very busy on the weekend, yet there never seems to be enough barstaff. The barstaff themselves are pleasant enough, but on weekends they seem to be overworked and tired. More staff are needed
- On the new food menu, the vegetarian options are practically non-existent.

Opposite station, cheap beer, chain pub...I was expecting this to be ghastly when I went in recently for the first time for years. But it's actually quite good. As rachael says the old alky brigade seem to have moved on (nextdoor it would appear) and there is now a mixed age crowd of generally nice friendly people. Huge garden out the back which even non-smokers like myself can enjoy. Definitely worth a visit.

Downside: It's just changed hands from M&B to some new pubco, they've taken some of the beer range away (Kronenbourg, Carlsberg & I think one ale) and put the prices up (London Pride from 2.10 to 2.55 - still cheap for Romford but quite a hike all the same).

It's a GREAT PUB!
Especially now that the smoking ban has come into place alot less old drunken men are there.
It's become pretty youthful actually.
The drinks are really cheap, not only the beer but cocktails and bottled alcho-pops are too.
I would defiantly spend every weekend in here!

two words come to mind s*** hole

Nipped in here as it was the nearest pub to the station, vast place, much like a W*nkerspoons, but with a garden out the back. I bet its wedged on a Friday and Saturday night, I had a pint of OK LOndon Pride at the very reasonable price of 2.10, Tetley bitter was also available, the huge bar has a staggaring number of fizz fonts, it took me a while to find the handpumps!

Beers are still quite cheap and the atmosphere is good. Pub staff are polite and helpful but struggle to serve when it's very busy at night. The meal deals are very good value. It is the ideal pub if you don't like the music playing.

sucha shame about the sniff heads in the place now.. well and truely lost what it used to have.
Jackrum - 18 Sep 2008 00:40

anonymous - 9 Oct 2007 03:22
Been Refurbed and lost the atmosphere, now it has joined the chain pub clone look
Jackrum - 10 Sep 2007 21:51
If the ex trax customers would go back it would be better.. its rammed every night now which makes the place hot and takes ages to get served.

still cheapest pub in romford though
Jackrum - 12 Mar 2007 15:48
This seems to be a much larger place than the Morland that it used to be (hope I'm not losing my marbles here). Still a bit down at heel, but beer was fine.
hotrods - 21 Jan 2007 07:28
Bit Tatty But @ 1.39 a pint that can be overlooked! 8/10
fat_beer_badger - 11 Jan 2007 16:40
Extremely packed, however extremely cheap. Nice beer garden polite bar staff. Would be less packed if punters formely of the firkin returned to the bitter end .
sctyc - 22 Sep 2006 13:22

what a great place if you want value for money and a mixed range of clientele, sort of place you could take your parents on a saturday night and spend less than a tenner per round. we sat between a group 50year olds and a group of students and both seemed to have a great night
the_one_eye_spy - 24 Apr 2006 00:27
this is an ok pub, as has been mentioned the drinks are very cheap, cheaper than even wetherspoons, which takes some doing, and they have a couple of ok ales, and a pretty decent range of lagers.

its a very mixed clientel within the pub, with the older generation of 60+ making a good dent on the percentages, and then the 'goths / grungers' & also the local 'rudeboys' & 'hooligans' also taking up some of the numbers.

i've never encountered any trouble in there.

the only downsides are that it gets very crowded and at times takes absolutely ages to be served because it would appear the bar staff have no memory whatsoever as to who is next to be served, and they just move randomly around the long bar, so being served is a lucky dip, also the toilets are a pretty sorry state, usually overflowing, with a huge dent in the trough, which seems like someone has gone head first into it at some point... lovely....

other than that though its an ok place if you are with friends, or an old man wanting a dark corner to hideaway in.

Originally the 'rising sun' hotel, then 'the morland arms', this was my first spiritual home and the one place me and my mates spent all our time trying to get into before we hit the legal age. Being the only pub in romford town centre with a geniune beer garden (not a 'patio' which is more common) and so close to the station, it's perfect for either a summer rendezvous, a quiet drink in the evening, or a beer-up before going out properly.

The best thing about the goose is its quality service and afforable alcoholic beverages. They also do favourable deals on Sambuca, Aftershock and the like, making it very easy to get very messy. It's a bit of an old-timer's pub, though, and while a bunch of gents approaching their mid-twenties will quite easily blend into the background, a younger group of lads would be, effectively, stared out of the pub. Which is good. The only criticism that must be levelled is the apparent absence of a suitable air-conditioning system, allowing the venue to become somewhat smokey at the best of times (even when no one's smoking it seems), making it a no-go for asthma suggerers and families. It should be observed that were its location different (i.e. not right outside the station), it's quite possible that I'd never set foot in the place.
duffy - 10 Feb 2006 11:08
a lot better since it became the goose was my work local when it was the morland arms and that was crap , like it in here still have a pint in here whenever in romford , nice and friendly normally end up chatting to someone at the bar so the locals are friendly (for romford) , the staff are superb (whenever ive been in) always seems ok in here , bar next door is the worry but heard thats been closed down or something , this pub on my scale will be noted in dispatches , wasnt quite awarded a george cross cause last time i was in i got puked on by some chav idiot .
all in all a good punt worth a visit and the beer aint bad either
romfordir - 6 Feb 2006 16:46
This is the place to get drunk in before hitting the Romford clubs, and trust me, you'll need to be drunk to enjoy the local hospitality.... cheap drinks but full of scruffy looking children in their strange goth outfits... Still, have met a bloke in here before called Hitler and another fella who told us about his mate that died while trying to swim while drunk in a vat in the old brewery, so can be an eye-opener!
drunkmarv - 8 Sep 2005 16:48
My regular, spent lots of time here with mates

Nice to relax in.. its a lot nicer than it used to be too.. Nice garden too
Spartakoos - 15 Aug 2005 21:08
this has got 2 be the worse pub in romford
the staff seem ok. cheap beer.
toilets are always wet and dirty.
the boss is very rud and likes 2 bully people smaller then him.

beerdrinker35 - 11 Aug 2005 21:19
Old Style, and Cheap Drinks but still a terrible pub!
DNA1984 - 9 Aug 2005 16:11
Decent pub, true the smoke is way too think in there but its a pub not an oxygen tent, and i dont smoke.

Great place to chill out in the summer in the garden. which is a nice change to the grotty cobbles allyways that all the other pubs in romford seem to have.

Prices are very very good, bar staff are very competant and friendly.

Its a good place to have a few before going to any of the local clubs.

Jackrum - 21 Apr 2005 22:35
This must be one of the worst pubs I have ever been in. As you open the door you are greeted by huge clouds of smoke thats also desperate to get out. It is populated by the type of people that think Weatherspoons pubs are expensive. Burberry and fake bling abounds on the clientele whom wouldn't know a decent Bacardi Breezer as they were bottled by it, never mind a good pint of beer. The rest of the population is made up of old men, looking as if they had been sleeping rough most of their lives, getting quietly drunk around the walls of the pub on one of the knife scarred stools, hacking up as much phlegm as they can muster.
On one of the two quick visits I have made (mainly as a stopping off point to use the particularly smelly toilets) I was able to witness a bar brawl between two young girls having of course first moved their requisite pushchairs out of harms way. And this was at 4pm on a Saturday.
I was gracious enough to give it one point as the beer is cheap and so I didnt mind leaving most of it as I beat a hasty retreat.

Great Pub.. Relaxing, Old Style, and Cheap Drinks.. What more could you ask for.. Gr8 Pub
Dan - 13 Oct 2004 11:53
cheap beer, good service but can be full of p**s heads & odd old geeezer asleep over his pint
kevin - 17 Sep 2004 14:47
its great for a get together with some buddies....drinks are lovely and cheap for even me to afford rather than having to pay 4 quid for a vodka!!
gemma davies - 2 Oct 2003 12:05
Compared with the rest of Romford, I rate the Goose up there at the top. The drinks are cheap, the door staff are inoffensive, the bar staff are competent and they actually have a proper beer garden as opposed to a patio. Plenty of seating inside and out to cater for even the largest parties of friends.
