user reviews of the The Rail View, South Croydon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Rail View became the View. The View was boarded up last week and will not rise phoenix like from the ashes. In several months time the local CAMRA Branch will show there true mettle and send a small footnote to the London Drinker and lament the Views passing by downing lots of ale in their bunker at the Hope Carshalton. Campaign my *rse!

After looking at this site and reading the previous statement below, even though a few years previous I must say I find it a very strange statement. From my understanding the management then is still in ownership now. But even though I'm not a regular regular I do attend quite often to watch the football or other events and I cannot compliment the host for their hospitality more. I've never felt I wasn't invited and have often been involved by the obvious regulars and never felt a "closed shop" mentality at all. But then what pub if you're not a full regular wouldn't make you feel that way?

In all I find the service from staff and owners delightful and would highly recommend anyone to this pub.

This pub is a potential goldmine, it has a great location, parking its large and even has a lovely garden.

it is surrounded by many pubs doing a roaring food trade, but the management are failing miserably and have even had to close their kitchen. And they are really pushing their luck.

Sadly this place is a 'closed shop', something I thought didn't really exist anymore. As you walk in and if you are a new face the silence decends and as one other chap mentioned in his reviews the service is cold, frosty and unfriendly its run by the kind of cagey people who don't look you in the eye and that make you just feel uncomfortable and certainly not wanting to hand over any readies to.

Looking for great business opportunity?

Find out who owns the lease change the name to something classically pubish - go upmarket and make this the great pub it certainly has every potential to be, I give it less than a year under present management!

That's decided then, one pub I shall continue visiting, knowing that slerpy will not be going there any more.

I was given to understand that "The View" was holding a beer festival this weekend,as this was the first time that such an event has taken place hereI did not expect much and was not disappointed.Walking towards the pub I saw so many notices advising of forthcoming events etc.that reading them all would take up a ridiculous amount of time,I was not overly bothered when Cameroon played Denmark. The festival boasted five ales.I chose a pint of B.G.Tips from Blue Monkey Brewery which was drinkable but did not persuade me that I should order another. The service was poor, the barman and guvnor were put out by my appearance as I disturbed their conversation( customers always wanting to be served!) The outside garden has a huge decking area which looks decidedly"chavvy" a horrible thing to do not what would otherwise be a decent garden.I will make a point of not bothering this place with my trade again.

The View is a two bar traditional pub, situated not too far away from South Croydon station.

Although it's still basically the same pub as it was on my last visit several years ago, it's clearly had quite a major change in emphasis since then, which has resulted in a name change from The Railway View to the rather pretentious sounding The View. Sadly, the splendid railway pictures in the comfortably furnished saloon bar have been replaced with a series of art prints of pop stars including The Beatles and that splendid role model, Amy Winehouse. This has created a pub with a bit of a student feel to it and, perhaps in recognition of this, the food menu is pizza orientated. Notably, both bars have a dartboard. Sporting related prints ( eg - World Cup 1966, George Best ) remain in the smaller adjoining public bar, which has a tiled floor

There's a fine outside decking area and garden, which, despite the pub name, does not have much of a view worth talking about.

On my Bank Holiday Monday visit, the pub was rather deserted and I was able to watch in splendid isolation on the TV screen the conclusion of the Test Match against Bangladesh at Lords. The barman seemed more interested in working on his laptop than in engaging in meaningful conversation with yours truly.

Beers on were London Pride, Adnams and Harveys Best, the latter being on good form and at a keenly priced 2.85p. A Fathers Day Beer Festival is being held over the weekend of 19/20 June. The pub was in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide a few years ago when it was The Railway View, but it's not in the 2010 Edition.

This was not a particularly memorable visit in all honesty and the jury's out on this one as far as I'm concerned, but a return visit is not ruled out at some time in the future.

This has been the "VIEW" for sometime No railway, you can't blame Doctor. Beeching for this one. A Beer Festival is due on the 19/20th June. Not many ales but seriously well selected-Jaipur Thornbridge, BGSips Blue Monkey,Hoopa doodaldoo Brewsters,Lifeboat Titanic etc etc.If the weather is good the garden here is rather nice.

My first visit yesterday. Two of the three handpumps on, Pride & a decent Harveys, 2.75. The two rooms either side of a central bar both have a dartboard, the lounge on the left (where the pumps are) was showing the rugby and, when we opted for the empty vault (public) we were invited to flick on the tv if we wanted to watch it. This side sports images of Taylor, Bristow, Bobby Moore aloft the 66 team, Best. Seems a community local and was being decorated with balloons & 50th birthday bunting while we were there. Itd be nice to see that 3rd HP in use with a micro beer, but I liked the place. Shame the name has been shortened to the slightly pretentious sounding 'The View'.

Friendly popular local a with good selection of real ales from a selection of brewers and not just Green King IPA...

Has a decked terrace and a garden if it's too busy inside which i y has been on a couple of occasions.

Worth a visit.

I have visited this pub on many occasions and the staff and occupants are friendly. Place is kept clean and tidy.

Good local's boozer, although can be overrun with teenagers at the weekend thanks to the disco and karaoke evenings regularly laid on. Always the same old faces both sides of the bar, though, which makes for a homey feeling, and it has the best provision for smokers in South Croydon with a nice decked terrace out back with a heater which actually works.
