Stupidly, I was persuaded by some friends to go into this pub again. I regretted it instantly - some very chav looking customers and the staff weren't much better. London Pride cheap but not in the best of nick. Drinkable but not a patch on the pint served by the Flowing Spring which we went on to.
Yer pays yer money, yer takes yer choice.

For a chain this isnt bad. Good pint of Breakspears and the food is top notch.

More restaurant than pub most of the time - but as the evening wears on, the pub side of things gears up, based around the pool table. There's a definite core of regulars who use it as their local.
There's a beer garden back and front, a good selection of bitters, and plenty of room, but it's really just a big barn full of tables.

I popped in here over the weekend, as I'm trying to visit all the Reading pubs I haven't yet been to at least once.
Not good I'm afraid. As someone else has said, it's one of those soulless large spaces that somehow fails to feel anything like a pub. Bar staff were chatting at the end of the bar despite three customers waiting, eventually with a sigh sidled over. Tsk - pesky customers. Still, got it ticked off the list.

I think I paid my last visit the other night. Despite there being plenty of punters waiting to be served the entire barstaff consisted of one spotty herbert (nice tattoos BTW). OK, the poor lad was trying to do his best but they needed 2 if not 3 people behind the bar because a lot of food was being ordered.
I gave up after 5 minutes as I could see I wasn't going to be served any time soon. Several of the staff appeared to be on their break, filling their faces with greasy burgers. I understand that staff need time to eat and sit down for 15 minutes but surely it is possible to stagger the breaks?
Sorry TR - you could have a lot going for you but not with the present management. Take a visit down to the local Spoons and see how they cope in busy periods.

Bright garish lighting and largely open plan bar make for lack of atmosphere. looks and feels like a working man's drinker's pub (for those of them who actually work). Plenty of loud drinkers, male and female shouting across the full length of the pub to each other. Must have been displaced from the now closed Star pub. On the plus side though, friendly, prompt staff and well kept ale at a reasonable price. The food is quite good too and perhaps better than expected from a chain and at a very reasonable price. Worth a visit? Probably not, unless you walk up from the big council estate in which case you can drink plenty of good, cheap ale and smoke and shout your head off to your heart's content.

This pub seems to be selling its own "in-house" bitter right now - EPA. On special offer at the moment (1.99) and a pleasant enough drink (especially at that price).
Be warned though: not all the staff seem to know it is on promotion at the moment, and they have tried to charge me 2.40!

Some interesting comments about this pub - which I use quite often. The beer (Fullers London Pride/Brakspears Bitter and one other - which can change) can be variable. The Pride is usually the best bet as they sell a lot of it. I would like to see some local beer on offer (Loddon; West Berks; Two Bridges for example), but the prices are very reasonable. I have never had the need to eat here and judging by the remarks from other people I need not bother. It looks like standard branded stuff and I think Wetherspoons probably do it better (and that's up for debate!!).

I continue to go here once or twice a month (to meet up with mates) and it really is becoming a pub of two halves. The good half is the beer is always more than passable. The staff seem to know, on the whole, what's what when it comes to "real ale".
But the food - dear oh dear. They must be using the very cheapest of ingredients and none too skilfully assembled. Best avoided unless you are absolutely starving.
Bit torn as to what score to allocate. 9 or even 10 for the drinks side, barely 2 for food.

A Sizzling Pub Co chain pub which usually I'd avoid, But. as it is next to the crematorium, does get used.
Brakespears, Pride and Ringwood 49 yesterday at an unbelivable 2.20! Quality was fine as was the service. The other drinks looked very reasonably priced with, for instance, Guinness at 2.90.

Go here for Beer. It's good. It's cheap.
Do not go here for the food. It is by far the worst I have ever experienced.
I've not ventured into the garden, but hopefully they do something to address it.

Beer is good in this pub and very reasonable prices. The food I have tried a few times is fairly poor and I had today a Steak pie that did not have a scrap of meat in it at all. It had just a jelly like paste which tasted of salt. Probably the worst meal I have ever had in any pub.

Bit of a soulless place, but on the upside I have never had a duff pint there. Staff are friendly enough and eager to serve. Garden at rear is a total shambles - wonky benches, fag-ends lying everywhere and the grass on the lawn(?) looks like it gave up the unequal struggle years ago. Quite pleasant sitting out the front on a summer's evening though.
Practice your secret handshakes if you want to get into the building at the back!

The beer is cheap alright, but I'd say not very well kept. The pride was not the worst I've tasted, but it could be considerably better. I ended up drinking the John Smith's - so maybe the Pride was bad after all

A suprisingly good pub given the Chain Pub feel created by the signs. Often with these chain pubs the first thing to go is a proper pint of Ale because of the bother / effort in maintaining them however this is not the case here with three ales on tap - London Pride was on at a very reasonable 2.09 per pint which was very good, also available was Timothy Taylor's Landlord and if I recall correctly an Admans beer.
As well as the drinks being reasonably priced, food is also pretty cheap and whilst not the finest cuisine ever is perfectly fine.
You will notice a lot of people around in black ties - this is the nearest pub to the Crematorium so this place does a roaring trade in wakes.
