please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've lived in Colchester all my life but for one reason or another never ventured over the Rowhedge for a pint. I was invited along to the Albion last week. What a little gem it is.

There were 4 good ales on tap and the staff were very welcoming. Very traditional interior with some people quietly playing chess in the corner and some piped music at times. There's a beer garden accross the road right on the River Colne with some great views. Well worth a visit.

Very well kept ales and good place to sink a few. Just wish they sold sarnies as well. But you can't have it all can you?

Darkstar Old Chestnut, Nethergate Dr Johns Panacea, Roosters Elderflower, I feel sure there were more pumps (4or5 in total?) but thats all I noted (well, this was the 9th pub). Comfortable woody interior, chairs, settles, barrel topped tables nr bar with barstools. Wood-burning stove near entrance, no it wasnt on. Good dartboard with, unusually, sensibly placed chalkboard sorry Td, dont know how we managed to allow friction to enter the game. Welcoming guv was a good craic, as were the handful of locals at the bar, I heard that there will be a fest next week (10-12Jul, Rowhedge Regatta on Sat, so expect it to be busy) with 9 at a time rotating through the bar, very tempting. It has a nice aspect over the Colne and, as LGA says, the 66A (every 30mins) will whisk you here in just 10mins from outside the British Grenadier, and take you all the way back to Colchester North if youve finished your tour, as we had (or, more accurately, the tour had finished US!).

I only started going to this bar because I thought Simon the landlord was well buff. Anyway, he's married and apparently not into middle aged men and although the pain is still real, I haven't stopped going, due to the fine ever changing selection of ales and the lovely waterfront location. Big up the Albion, and don't forget your slippers.

Excellent free house in the heart of Rowhedge. The pub overlooks the River Colne and Wivenhoe on the other side. This is a very friendly pub run by Simon and Dawn. 4 hand pumped ever changing ales are usually available including a dark one. The pub is quite large and even has an upstairs room which I believe you can book. The pub is currently Colchester CAMRAs Pub of the Year (2007). There is a large screen TV which often has a well known satellite sports channel on a Saturday afternoon.

You can get to the pub by a 66A bus from Colchester Town which does not take long. In better weather if you are feeling energetic there is a nice walk from Colchester. Aim for the right hand side of Hythe Quay taking you along side the River Colne to Rowhedge. I understand they also do not mind well behaved dogs as they also own one.
