Sometimes you just have to have a pint of Harveys! Lovely pub in all respects.

This pub has existed since the early 14th cetury. It is full of character and charm. There are two rooms and it seems that the focus is on food. The large selection on the blackboard looked tempting. But unfortunately this was our last pub of the day and we'd already eaten. Nevertheless, the pub does not neglect drinkers and there were 3 ales on - Harveys Sussex Best Bitter, Shepherd Neame Master Brew & Growler Bitter. The pub was busy and people had spilled out into the car park. It's in quite a secluded location, next to the village church, but is well worth seeking out if you're a fan of traditional unspoilt pubs.

Great service, great food, lovely garden.

Proper restaurant prices not restaurant quality, not enough portions for the money paid, location is good, plays upon past reputation. Don't bother go to somewhere that serves honestly priced grub

Overpriced food and painfully slow service despite there being few other diners. Whilst waiting 30 minutes for desserts, we overheard the landlord pontificating about the fact that it only takes one negative aspect to sour a diner's opinion of an otherwise good experience. It turned out that he had forgotten to send the order through to the kitchen. Oh the irony!

I think this place is an absolute delight! the food was superb , we went on a very busy evening, the landlord and lady were very welcoming on our arrival and seemed to be greeting everyone which was a nice touch. The lady behind the bar was lovely, friendly and most helpful and the young waitresses were all sweet and good fun. They seem to have a great mix of local drinkers and the diners and it seems to work very well. We will defiantly go back

Lovely atmosphere, good range of quality wines and the service was very good and the food excellent

Great local pub with an awesome garden outdoor area to sit in when the weather is good. Indoors, original 12th century oak beams, fireplaces and multiple small sitting areas. Mike, the owner was there when we cycled by and he was a great host I recommend it!

Fantastic atmosphere, like a second home to me. People are friendly and the food is excellent. A short stop by for one drink turns into all evening. The owners Sue and Mike and all the staff always make me feel so welcome and cozy, even when its very busy and crowded. It is always tidy and clean, and the garden is fab with all the flowers and water feature. Couldnt recommend more! :)

Mike and Sue Chapell are now running this pub again (they had it in it's heyday in the 90's and until 2006). Well worth another visit now.

The Star is our local pub and after not going there for a while, we were looking forward to returning. Service was very slow and attitude of staff not good. 8.15 table and main course arrived at 10.10. Food is good but needs better customer service to make it a good place to go for a nice evening out.

Hi Kipper, Only 4 people have rated it so it only takes one zero to drag the whole score down. I was in here again recently and it was good so I upped my rating a tad.
|
Don't understand the low rating. It is an old country pub with stacks of atmosphere. Service was friendly and efficient. Harvey's best was served. Wine list was limited, but if you want a choice of 50 go to a wine bar. Sunday roast was excellent. We shall return!

Looks like a nice pub but on our visit the food was not great and had to be taken back and the landlady was very rude for some reason and that was before we even asked for the food to be taken back!

Tucked away in a small lane behind Old Heathfield church, The Star is now a reasonable pub with a reasonable menu rather than the "restaurant with a bar" that was it's reputation previously. A change of hands in the last year has brought a more spartan environment - no changes to the fabric of the pub, just that all of the clutter has been removed.
There are two smallish rooms served from the one bar, one predominantly used for dining and the other predominantly drinking. There is an additional upstairs dining room opened at weekends and for private parties. The garden is superb - beautifully kept and with views of the coast 15 miles away and out to sea.
The beer is good - Harveys and at least one guest. This week I enjoyed Sharp's Doombar from the Rock brewery which was excellent.
