I patronised this pub now and then throughout 2008 and found the beer well kept and , of course, cheap, being SS's. A few jack-the-lads in evidence now and again but no different from neighbouring establishments in that regard.

Stockton Scooters: Yep, the very same, now living in the good old US of A after a stint serving Queen and Country. Stockton used to be an excellent pub crawling night out back in the day. Rob Sanders is living in Wyoming now, about 1500 miles away from me so it's not like we can drop by and drink drink a few beers. Should be back over there in or around Feb 2008.

Not like it used to be in the good old days. Is that Mick the mod from billingham ex ICI ?

I'll stick up for the place. I like it. Its cheap (was 1.16 a pint a few years ago now 1.34), it has good beer (Sammy Smiths), it isn't pretentious and doesn't pretend to be anything its not. Its a good cheap drinking hole.
I don't know about the Jukebox but presumably thats on its way out under the new Sammy Smiths policy. The Ayingerbraus should be getting replaced by Pure Brew Lager as well.

Andy - Yeah, I did, and it was a bloody dump. It was such a shame that it had changed so much. I shouldn't even have went inside, but I did, and didn't even stay for a pint. I guess I should have let the memories stay as they were. I expected everythig to be the same and it wasn't even close. It was a lot smaller than I remembered. Funny thing though, when I was hitting it about four times a week in the early 80's there used to be three old blokes would come in and sit at the top end drinking a few beers then leaving before it got busy. That's exactly how I felt when I was in there. Bloody hell, it's a bugger to get old.

Great jukebox and that Ayingerbrau is lethal stuff. Fond memories of a drunken friend setting his hand on fire after too many Ayingerbraus then me throwing up outside. Essential place to visit on a tour of Stockton.

Superb place. Cheap beer that tastes ok. Place is dingy and better for it. Last time i was there i got to see someone get stabbed amongst a brawl at the bar - always comedy. Best time to go is during the Stockton Riverside Festival where the little yard plays host to bands and other cultured stuff. The place has loads of atmosphere and is packed (sometime in July) Recommend a few beers here before going to the mosher club next door later on.

There are some fantastic Sam Smiths pubs out there. This is not one of them.
Sharon and Eddie, are, I think, the current landlords - and while their kids run riot around the picnic tables in the Yard, scary pints of Old Brewery are vended from the lines that never get cleaned. Give one a sniff - it's fun, I promise. Brown is the staple colour, and everything in the place is painted in some shade of it or another. And, man, it gets smokey!
Having said all that, buy a pint of Sovereign, or an excellent Sam Smith bottled beer, and retire out into the Yard on a sunny day - or pick a quiet corner down at the bottom of the pub - and you'll soon be having a whale of a time picking fault with the place. Then go see a band at the Georgian next door.
