Phoenix Inn, Hookback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Stopped off here on Saturday evening after a day out, feeling hungry and thirsty. An attractive old inn sitting back off the A 30 behind a spacious car park it has a large bar, arranged into different areas, and a seperate resturant area.
The bar had a large tv showing the Ireland v England rugby, but nowhere near as obtrusively as down the road at the Crooked Billet. There is plenty of comfortable furniture, especially around a very welcoming open log fire. Ales on tap were Ringwood Best, Hobgoblin, Sharp's Doom Bar, an exceptional pint of Daleside Spring Frenzy and Old Rosie cider.
We dined in the resturant and had a cracking three course meal with a nice bottle of Aussie shiraz and glasses of port all round - 104 for the three of us. And the service was as good as the food.
Apparently the Ladies are exceptional although the Gents seemed bog standard (groan!)
All in all highly recommended and marked down for an early return.

Nice feel to the pub but alas in my last couple of visits the beer quality has been poor. Four hand pumps featuring the likes of Doom Bar,Ringwood 49er,Courage Best and Old Hookey recently. I applaud the idea of a choice of beer albeit the above selection not over adventurous, but four pumps is to many if your not shifting the quantity which i suspect to be the case. Of course i may have just been unlucky and caught end of barrels but three different beers over two visits all poor at best,i dont think so. If they sort the beer out this would be a good pub because everything else about it seems fine.

Went here recently and have returned a few times. (keep forgetting to write this review). Excellent beers and a simple wine list that covers all the bases without ripping you off. The food is simple but classic, great meat and fresh local ingredients. This is a traditional pub that will not disappoint. Lunch or dinner, and a great Sunday Lunch. I have tried them all as I am only 2 miles away.

Seems to be shut when I visited last night (19/2/09). Hopefully, but being ruined by changing the layout etc.

We had some excellent beer and food there today. New owners have done a great job doing it up (spot the classic Italian mopeds on the ceiling for example) and it continues to get the classic / modern car buffs there that it always has. Good atmosphere, plenty of space with friendly family owners. I remember this pub years ago as a rough and ready joint with dodgy everything. Not anymore. Keep it up chaps...
