On entering during early Saturday evening, first impressions of a busy, old local pub which is what it is rather than a restaurant. Lots of large, loud, middle aged men hogging the bar. Only one had the courtesy to step aside so that I could see the pumps and order a drink. Very prompt and engaging bar staff doing a good job. Very good pint of Good Old Boy. Lots of food available on various menus. We ate in the conservatory which is very nicely appointed and away from the bores (or is that boars) at the bar. Disorganised service where one person shows you to the table, another brings the menu several minutes later and then...nothing. We waited for 20 minutes then had to approach a different waiter to order the food. Once ordered everything was good. Very good quality fresh (not frozen) food, generous portions and very nicely cooked and presented. The chef (I don't know whether it's the old or new one) is doing very well. We asked one waiter for the bill, a different one brought it then after another ten minute wait, a different one took payment. The staff are very nice and are prompt once you ask them but really we wasted half an hour just waiting to order and to pay the bill. Isn't there one person in charge who allocates the staff to specific tables rather than the apparent free for all that it is now? That's my only criticism but one that the management would do well to consider as it's bound to get busier over the summer months. You'll have people walking out. Very good beer, very nice staff, very good food and considering that it is a pub and not a restaurant, that's as much as one should expect. That's part of the joy of country pubs. You never know what you'll find there.

Due to the recent change of chef and as we had not visited for eating at the Old Boot Inn for a month it was about time we checked out the experience. On arrival we were served drinks to the table by owner John Haley.
The bar and conservatory were both reassuringly busy for a Friday night.
Choice of weekly specials on the blackboard above the fireplace, an A La Carte menu and Bar menu. We opted for a mixture from the Specials and A La Carte and are pleased to confirm the experience was excellent like before. My venison from the specials was so tasty I just hope it stays available!
Thanks to the chef Simon Rudd, John, Ovi and Brian for another enjoyable experience.

The landlord is off to the royal wedding on 29th April, so something must have appealed to "someone".

Very good food indeed! Chef Rody has really started to make a name for himself! we've been living 5 miles away from the old boot inn for 19 years and never heard of this place! but we did heard about the new french chef So, a big well done to the kitchen! Mr Coulter

We visited on a Sunday and were told the same. My wife, who is vegetarian didn't want the single veggie item on the Sunday menu, so asked for a cheese roll off the main menu. No go, apparently the chef can't manage it on a Sunday. Very dissapointing will not return, especially given that there are many exallent pubs in this area.

Visited for Sunday lunch. A slightly odd menu policy - we were presented with a reduced menu (not unusual for pubs on a Sunday) but they proceeded to serve other items to different tables but refused to do the same for us. The nomimal excuse given was that they (e.g. fish and chips) were from the kids menu, although other adults were also being served this. All a slightly odd distraction really, because the food we did have was very nice indeed and the local West Berkshire Brewery ale I had was very nice and well kept. I'd still very happily go back if in the area again.

Mainly an eating establishment. Busy last night, Friday22/01/10. Excellent tasty and well presented food. Well kept ale. Just as important, excellent service despite it being busy.

Nice pub, nice people, good beer; agreeable conservatory with fine view and satisfactory food. Prices? The thick end of 13 for a couple of sausages, mash and gravy...

Friendly pub serving real ale from the West Berkshire Brewery
