Now a fish 'n' chip shop. Disheartening.

By Barnsley Brewery I meant Acorn Brewery (whoops).

A bit of a disappointment, given the write-up in the Good Beer Guide. The exterior, despite a couple of nice architectural (Art Deco?) features is actually quite tatty and dull. The modernised interior is loud and lairy (especially so I thought, given it was a Tuesday afternoon!). With loud music competing against a loud TV and then the punters bellowing over both to make themselves heard.
5 hand pumps at the bar but only two ales actually on - (Black Sheep and Old Peculiar) the other pumps didnt have any indication that they get used much. My OP was good and was quite cheap - 2.40. There's a sign outside advertising Barnsley Brewery beers - but not one was available inside!
Basically it's a town centre bar which happens to sell a couple of decent quality beers. I guess if youve got a few minutes to kill waiting for train its worthwhile but if youre in town for any length of time youd be better off heading for the Dove or Keel.

closed when I visited on Sunday evening. Shame, given the previous reviews

I understand this is changing owners next week so the beer was a bit run down from when I was last in here. Theakstons XB, Acorn Barnsley Bitter and Bradfield Farmers Blonde. Beer was ok, pub nice enough being a large one bar establishment. Will have to see what the new owners do.

Trying to find a decent pub with real ales in Barnsley is not easy. Visited the Gatehouse prior to the Barnsley v Norwich game and the beers were in good condition. However, decided to give the Adnams Broadside a miss as a matter of principle as it comes from Suffolk and it was match day!!
Bar staff were very friendly and I look forward to returning the next time we are playing in Barnsley.

An unpromising grey and red exterior belies a comfortable modern town pub. Several different drinking areas and seating styles- leather sofas v high stoools etc. OK it's not a 'traditional' pub,but a pared down, clean look doesn't necessarily make it 'characterless'. It was certainly not as bleak as I was expecting. Six real ales on my visit, all from micros. The quality of my Kelham Island 'Easy Rider' was excellent. The only real downside to my visit was the intrusive 'R&B lite' music in the background. The entrance to the new interchange is literally 20 yards away, which is great if you're not driving!

Ultra modernised establishment next to the under construction bus/rail interchange and featuring six real ales, predominantly from Yorkshire. Two large, characterless areas (one non-smoking) with semi wood panelled walls and photos of old Barnsley. Not exactly oozing atmosphere but the cask beer range (6) and quality is its main asset.
