user reviews of the Sussex, Hove

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub reminds of the rhyme about the little girl who was good when she was good she was very very good and when she was bad she was horrid. This is the Sussex, Hove - totally inconsistent. I thought I could rely on the chicken and bacon salad which is usually delicious. Today the crisp cos lettuce and cherry tomatoes turned up as just a mess of limp soggy leaves and pale, elderly tomato. The "crunch garlic croutons" were bits of damp bread cut into squares. Maybe some of it had been "lightly toasted," but very lightly, most was just plain bread. No excuse, Sussex, you can buy croutons ready-made!

Previously, I've enjoyed beautiful, crisp chips, but last time I had their battered fish and chips, it really didn't taste good. Also, their bowls of chips generally vary in quality. Last time I sent some back, the barmaid said, "Well, sometimes the oil needs changing." What?

Such a shame. I should stop eating there but it's my local and even though sometimes the food is dreadful, at other times, it's great. Perhaps the great chef who turns out the great food should be put in charge of training the others.

I like the place. It has always been the same for the past 30 years or so. A good place to meet and chat. It has always been popular. Well worth a visit.

Have to say I agree with the consensus of the last four comments.

- it does feel like a Travel Lodge [thats a bad thing]
- it does feel like a Weatherspoons [a very bad thing]
- service can be a bit ropey/surly

Last time myself and friends went in there it was coming towards the end of the night so the bar staff switched off the half of the lights. This would have been okay if 2 men and 2 women weren't using the toilets at that point. When the bar staff were questioned as to what they were doing they poorly feigned surprise. Im surprised it stays open to be honest.

a bit like a wetherspoons - but not as clean and with less ale selection. However it is cheap, and you can actually see the sea from some points. ok if you're desperate/skint. Oh, nice garden/orangerie out back.

Went in here today for some lunch (1pmish)

Plate stone cold, chips and peas obviously re-cooked (at this time of day?), pie almost acceptable (hint, guys: re-heating pies in a microwave generally buggers up the pastry)

For almost 7, not very good vfm.

Pleasant beer garden though

However, could be so much better

like a (rather grand) travel inn lobby.

DON'T GO TO THIS PUB!!! I couldn't believe it - I've been going here on and off for the past ten years. Tonight was the final of the cricket world cup - we WERE looking forward to it. Other half (South African) moved a newspaper out the way when I was ordering drinks and the next thing I know we are not to be served. Ridiculous. We had already been chatting to people at the bar about the cricket score. Oddly enough, the land lord we had never set eyes on before was with some "friends"...........who knows...........who cares..............We wont be returning,,,,,,,,,,up to you.............

Has THE best beer garden!! From 12:00 until about 3:00pm it's a complete suntrap. Good for watching cricket and rugby as Chaz is a big fan.
