Visited in December 2011. Nice, clean rooms with modern amenities. Better standard than most B&B's I've stayed in. The pub has a great atmosphere and the food is superb. Debbie and Brian are as down to earth and friendly as your own family. Would definately stay again.

the clifton is now under new management since 17th january 2011 , and the food and atmosphere of the clifton hotel is vastly improved . so please give the new landlord/landlady a visit and try for yourselves which is what i did and was not dissappointed at all .sunday dinner is a must , but best to book.looking forward to my next meal there .

The Clifton marketing campaign seems to be to put shoddy hand written signs all over the island........just about sums up the place really!

from the time we got here we were seated an waited half hour to be told we had to order at the bar. we ordered 3 large 1 medium and 2 small roast sunday lunches, when they arrived we had been given 2 large and 4 small meal(there was very little difference in sizes)when we took them back we were told that they didn't serve medium size meals and that they would cook some more potatoes for us,they throw some FROZEN roasts into a deep fat fryer and then they put on the table 2 roasts and 2 new potatoes, when we cut into them they were still frozen in the centre. the "fresh vegetables" were still cold, the "well done" beef was still pink in the middle, the yorkshire puddings were still doughy and the gravy was lumpy. after much complaining the management offered us compensation of 1 meal and a round of drinks, which we refused as this is an insult. i have never had such appalling service. as we are locals and keep the pubs and restaurants going through the winter months. needless to say we would not recommend the clifton and would not go back again.

Very impressed that it has 4 traditional ciders on draught. Stowford Press, New Forest, Westons and the lethal Cheddar Valley. Also does a cider festival some time in the summer which I found out about from a friendly local. Plenty of mid range food on offer.

With regard to the comment by Steve45 re inclusion in the CAMRA guide....It has now been dropped for the very reasons he cites. Due, it seems to a change of landlord

the clifton has been taken over by a great couple the food is absolutly fantastic, fresh and hot loads of specials,we stayed there for a night we had a great time, they had live music on the hosts were very good, they got up and cooked a beautiful english breakfast.we would rewcommend it to anyone

Food is OK but the place lacks atmosphere. Take away serviceis a good idea but doesn't seem to cover their main menu

Stayed here for one night B&B. Large room at the front with an interesting panoramic view. Three uninspiring ales and a cloudy cider on offer in the bar. The menu is extensive including a specials board. I had overcooked sea bass and my colleague had a bland Cock & Bull concoction. Breakfast was of the Greasy Joe standard - a full English swimming in fat and a mug of coffee on an unlaid table. This was cooked by the same "chef" from the previous evening. The TV dominates the bar. The landlady turned it up really loud in the evening and was watching it again early in the morning. She never smiles. A disappointing stay in a cheerless hostelry.

We visited this pub as it is the only pub in Portland in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Don't know why as both beers we tried were very cloudy and certainly not up to GBG standard. The first one we drank as it tasted ok, but the second had to be replaced it was so bad. The food was poor too I'm afraid.
