After becoming The Fairfield Tavern at the start of 2010, this pub closed its doors again recently and is now boarded and for sale.

Dropped by tonight with the intention of supporting a new venture in a reopened pub. I have to confess to being a little disappointed, the pub is marketed as a free house but just Courage Best, Badger Sussex Best and Pickled Partridge. The Partridge may well be pickled but having a vinegary tang was I thought taking the description a little far. The entrance leads into a room with the bar opposite, a side door leads to another space with a serving hatch, but mind the step down, easily missed as its on the line of the door. A strange ambience, the lighting is quite bright, and I found the clientele a little unsettling if not threatening, and the constant moving in and out and shouting between the bar and outdoor smoking gazebo rather irritating. I'm glad its reopened and provides a service but not to my taste sadly.

I'm a Pub Quiz fan and came accross this pub now called the Fairfield Arms. Joined some friends in a team on a Thursday - what a fantastic night. Entertaining Quiz Master great selection of beers and lagers and the management supply cheese and crisps as nibbles. Highly recommended.

roger b obviously has not been to the pub on thurs nights when there is a cracking good music session hosted by maria and paul... the place was packed, the standard was surprising and the behaviour was remarkably civilised... you can have the best beer in the world marred by v bad behaviour so the quality of the beer is not the be-all-and-end-all of everything

Not been here for many years but was attracted by recent reports of improvements although I dont recall having any bad impressions about the place from when I lived in the area. It is obvious as soon as you walk in that it has undergone a recent makeover but, to be honest, the interior displays very little character as a result. There is an odd mix of battered stripped back floors with fresh exposed modern brickwork and token pictures and nick nacks which really dont look at home. It all looks very contrived and nondescript with no real focus or wow factor. Given that it was previously a Badgers pub, the beers nowadays are pretty run of the mill Courage Best and Deuchers (another clip was reversed but possibly Directers) with prices reasonable. The beer garden is one of the better features but not such an attraction heading into the winter months. Overall a disappointing pub but there are far worse around and, given that it was previously closed and boarded up, we should at least be thankful that it has survived and will hopefully continue to do so.

new pub... not sure... needs some live music... nice interior and absolutely love the litte room behind the bar... very cosy
Great to see it open again (new name is the Fairfield Tavern). Good place to go and read the paper or chat with friends over a decent real ale.
Some local beers, e.g. Surrey Hills or Wandle, would be a good idea.
Getting better as the Fairfield as it gets into its stride. The kitchens are due to open up again next week which will be even better. Deuchars and usually one other bitter on. There is still no sign up (unless it went up today)! More people than just the regulars turning up now which is good and broadens its appeal.

My old local. Didn't go much previously, haven't been since refurb...
pub has now reopened under " The Fairfield Tavern ", that needs to be updated, looks busy !!

Sorry that should say "Fairfield Tavern"

Yes I believe mictechnic is correct, there has been a lot of activity around the pub lately, the shutters are off and a sign proclaims "Opening soon as the Fairfield Arms" Good news.

I've heard that interest is being expressed in the place at the moment so it may open again in the near future. "No one cried"? Yes, they did. But there were all too few of them, as there were all too few people going there. Some of the nearby pubs, quite honestly, aren't all that, yet they keep trading somehow.
Now closed and boarded. Please flag as such. Apparently it can't be knocked down as it's listed. No-one cried when it closed as several other pubs (Honest Cabbage, Cricketers, Duke of Bucks, Albion) within 5 mins walking distance.
Now closed down. Future uncertain.

A cut above the average for local pubs, this place has good and friendly atmosphere and an interesting and comfortable (though by no means traditional) interior. A large garden out the back for smoking in. Stays open later on Friday nights (karaoke every second week). Worth a try.
Up there with the Grove for nice pubs in the area (though do clean up the dogs mess bearing in mind little kids go in there)
I like this place. It's not too busy, it's got a few ales, the food is excellent and it's got a pub dog. Depends what you're after in a pub, but this ticks the boxes for me. It's also got a large outside (undercover and sheltered) area for anyone who now needs to sit outside for a smoke.

Foun this great pub by chance. Not doing food yet but saw the new menu. Think if you look below the surface you will see a young couple struggling to run new business and bring up 3 kids. Give them a chance. Found them friendly and warm. When asked about their one bitter the response was satisfactory. As any true ale drinker knows the barrel should only be on for 3 days. They simply don't have the volume for a range a bitters and would rather have one quality beer then a selection of rubbish. Yes the staff do need a kick up the proverbial but if the last few weeks are anything to go by then this will be dealt with sooner rather then later so do give them a chance!

Oh dear... looks like I spoke too soon. I fear the Marlborough is already living on borrowed time. What looked so promising 3 months ago has rapidly gone downhill. Last couple of times I've been in the staff have frankly been pretty hopeless. Friendly enough, but seemingly unable to fulfill simple simple orders for beer or coffee without some sort of problem or a ridiculous wait (despite the fact there are no other customers!). They need to get their act together to save what could be a really decent business and a good local pub. What happened to the selection of ales, decent food menu and having live music? Now they only have one ale, just Sunday roasts (no veggie option) and the staff entertain themselves with karaoke on a Friday night.

Live jazz? Badger ales? Despite appearances, avoid!!

If it was 'just like any pub in Fairfield' it would sell Greene King IPA and possibly Courage Best. The Marlborough (that's its name, not 'M') breaks the local GK monopoly and sells Badger beers. Now whether you like those or not is up to you, but I say give the Marlborough a chance.
Now M nothing special just like any pub in fairfield .Food average much beeter in cricketers with thai . Only few people in on fri night sad atmosphere !

This is a quality pub, the new landlords have changed the name to The Malborough, but the main changes are inside: good beer, good food, good service and best of all a comfortable and quality atmosphere. Well done and keep up the great work.
Big improvements here. Under new management now and a totally different pub. No more scenes from 'Booze-Britain' outside of a Friday night, no fruit machine and although there is still a big screen, its rarely used. Good selection of drinks (including 3 real ales) and a decent roast on Sundays. Nice atmosphere last time I went in: chilled out music and a mixed of couples and small groups having a quiet pint. Decor is quirky but comfortable. The new manager says he is hoping to have live jazz on some nights.
this pub has changed names again . it is now called the "marlborough" or as signed outside " M ". POSH LOOKING INSIDE

Has now reopened as the Marlborough, decor is sort of colonial (and more comfortable than the Canbury Arms for a start), only one ale on at present (Badger) but there are three pumps so this may bode well for the future.
