please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Revisited yesterday still very busy due to the theatre and Victoria station, was surprised at the amount of beggers wandering in and out on the scrounge, got approached three times in less than 5 mins, even while standing at the bar, when I mentioned it to a member of staff I just got a blank look.

Now reopening as a Sam Smiths faux gin palace,
, very similar to the Windsor Castle, except a lot busier when the theatre next door s open, haven't said that one few places you can find a Stingo on draught in London
58Londoner - 30 Dec 2019 22:04
Very closed and boarded up - presumably because of the major works at what is known as Victoria Circle, a large scale development by Land Securities and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Standard central London pub... the beers kept ok but it doesn't really try hard to do anything that well.... probably doesn't need to.
terenced - 13 Dec 2010 11:37
Horrible place with no potential at all. Landlords never last 5 minutes here. The only plus point is that it stays open until midnight. However overpriced and very poor service. I'll only go if i'm desperate

Watch your bags - I just had my wallet stolen in here.

looked friendly from the outside.
we were seated very quickly, but had to ask for drinks. Staff took ages to come and take food order (40 mins). When food finally came out it was stone cold. Staff took the food back, bought it back out to me 15 mins later. By which time my mate had already finished her food. I was advised that the meal was a fresh meal though when I investigated under the chips it was the exact same meal i had sent back and it had been microwaved. While sitting waiting to be served I noticed at least 50% of meals were being taken back into the kitchen. We were offered tea/coffee 'on the house'. a small token but not enough to either make me recommend or re-visit this pub. If it weren't for the fact that they are next to 2 theatres and 95% of food trade is passing trade they would not have enough trade to warrant needing a restaurant. Absolutely awful!!!

Went in last night with some Romanian friends, when one was given his change, instead of 3 1 coins he was given two 1 penny coins sandwiched between two pound coins. When I questioned this the look of shock on the barmans face was a picture as I have an English accent. It is absolutely disgraceful what he was doing and to think of the amount of foreign visitors this pub must get, they must make a lot by ripping people off. If what other reviewers have said about serving slops is true as well then the place needs to be avoided although sadly as it is in a prime position the management will not bother doing anything if they are making a lot of money.

Just when I'm adjusting to paying around 3 for a pint it was a pleasant surprise to be charged 2.50 for a reasonable pint of Pride. It was early evening so it was the pre theatre and post work crowd. I liked the traditional decor so, all in all, no complaints.
gdm - 30 Sep 2009 21:37
I didnt notice if the barman served me slops, but like most of the other customers I was so pissed that I wouldnt have noticed anyway. A slaughtered German bird tried to give me her purse so that I could go to the bar and order as she couldnt stand up, let alone speak English. Obviously I made my excuses and left (without the purse), but I got the feeling that the transient nature of this pub allows people to let their hair down a little too much as they, like me, will probably never return.

Pride, Old Speckled Hen, IPA and Bombardier were all available along with standard and premium lagers.

I actually found the barman to be very pleasant, but if I had caught him fobbing me off with some slops I would have gone ballistic. Next time I am down I will pop in to see this for myself.

WARNING THIS PUB SERVES THE DREGS FROM THE DRIP MATS!

Went here last night for a quick drink with a few friends. I thought it was handy being close to the station. However, waiting at the bar I observed the barman emptying the dripmats (which were full of beer slops) into empty pint glasses. He had 3 pint glasses quarter full of dregs which he topped up with beer and served to customers. I could not believe my eyes. He was not discreet either as if it was the most normal thing to do.

Everything else about the pub was ok i suppose but I think you are taking a big risk with your health if you drink or eat here.

Somewhat surprised at some of the negative reviews. Dropped in here on the way home during the week and was pleasantly surprised particularly given the pub's proximity to Victoria. Pub was reasonably busy but not unpleasantly so. The interior was warm and welcoming helped by the leather benches around some of the walls and the orange lightshades.

Given the some of the dreadful places around and inside Victoria I have to say the Duke of York is a pretty decent place to meet someone for a few drinks before getting on the train.
murgatroyd - 7 Feb 2009 11:11
I went in here last night (waiting for the train from Victoria)
I ordered pint of speckled hen in front of the pumps , took it to a spot that was free at the SIDE of the pumps and witnessed every beer drinkers nightmare .....
Selling SLOPS to the public , I ordered an IPA , didnt get the slops , but witnessed at first hand the glasses of slops filling up and being served to the unlucky punters

PLEASE be AWARE of this pub.........go to the side and order your ales and BEWARE of half filled glasses behind beer pumps !!!!!
cossy52 - 11 Dec 2008 10:56
Worst meal of my life, ordered couscous with roasted vegetables topped with goats cheese, what arrived was half a tea cup of plain couscous without even salt with 1 floret of boiled cauliflower, a small spoon of peas and a couple of thin slices of goats cheese all separate on the side, the funniest plate of food I've ever seen, Was almost worth 9 for the story. Having said all that its ok if you just want a quick beer.
junipersa0 - 20 Aug 2008 10:23
I went to this pub in the early evening with a friend and it took us a while to get served. That said the staff were fairly pleasant. There was a reasonable range of beers on tap including Greene King IPA and Charles Wells Bombardier. Not an unpleasant experience, but if I was in the area again I would most likely try a different pub.
Fakenham - 29 Jun 2008 17:57
Busy, traditional pub with friendly, fast service and comfortable seating. Well worth a visit.
Dave_Home - 2 Jun 2008 09:08
Fairly ordinary central London pub - nothing particularly wrong with it, but won't be rushing back...
rpadam - 26 May 2008 23:14
DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. I went there last night and ordered a steak for 9. What they brought me was a small lump of meat. No veg. No chips. Underneath the meat was a small square which - on further inspection - was a SLICE OF BROWN BREAD with the crusts cut off. An absolute joke. They think they can get away with serving that and charging people for it? That was it - tiny steak, slice of bread, a dribble of sauce and two burnt mushrooms. The terrible thing was that it was so busy, the waiter didn't understand what we were saying, so we couldn't complain.
sirhumphreyappleby - 1 May 2008 12:18
Absolutely terrible. The bar staff seemed more interested in talking to each other and throwing ice around than serving beer. Stood at the bar for 20 minutes and still hadn't been served. Left in order to find a drink elsewhere.
awful - 11 Apr 2008 20:14
The problem with Moaney is that he's contradicting himself.Grown men in football shirts and quiet Sunday afternoon drinks,in my experience, don't go together.
Applaud the licensee on this one.Looking after the majority and not the whingeing minority.
gydave - 31 Mar 2008 16:23
The place is okay for a quiet Sunday afternoon drink, but won't be getting my custom again.
I have no problem with pubs refusing entry to those people wearing football shirts, but I do have an issue with being told to put my jacket on after being served my THIRD pint.

It's a pity the manager is too arrogant to see that it makes sense to put a poster by the entrance dictating dress code rather than imposing rules when you feel like it. It works for other pubs, maybe you're in the wrong line of work buddy!
moaneytony - 31 Mar 2008 10:38
Dont know where to start really... the (unecessary) music is too loud, making conversation and ordering drinks difficult, the staff are at the best indifferent and do not realise that there are 20 fliud ounces in a pint...not 18, still, getting a short pint is not that bad really as the beer was mostly a bit rank.

Aviod like the plague, there is a much better pub across the road (Stage door)
Phoebe_the_Dog - 12 Mar 2008 16:46
Went there for lunch yesterday. They had sectioned off 90% of the bar with red and white hazard tape for no apparent reason. Everyone wanting a drink was forced to queue at the LHS of the bar, and the barman was slow and sour. I ordered chicken salsa on a baked potato. It was the smallest baked potato I've ever been served, and the salsa was so drenched in corriander I couldn't taste anything else. My girlfriend ordered the Sheperd's Pie and it looked as if it had been sitting in the freezer for a month before being bunged into the microwave. I ordered a pint of stella and they charged me 3.40.

I'm never going back.
andydog - 30 Jan 2008 10:22
Currently closed for refurb, looks very shiny and nearly ready. Good timing to re-open after the smoking ban has kicked in.
zappomatic - 3 Jul 2007 14:24
Went upstairs here for food, was the best steak pie we've had in a long time. service was good, attentive but not all over you and everything was reasonably priced considering location. all in all a great night would recommend it to anyone looking to avoid overcrowded chain pubs.
stegwe - 17 Apr 2007 21:05
Having worked in the are for over 20 years, I went in here for the first time on 12 April. It was very disappointing. The customers were transient or tourists, the decor made even the shoddiest whetherspoons look like a palace and there wasn't enough room to swing the proverbial cat. On the plus side, the beer (IPA) was okay, but only just.

Oh, and the sign to the lounge bar should be removed as it points you up stairs to the restaurant - and no bar !
blueallover - 16 Apr 2007 13:59
Situated just opposite the main entrance/exit to Victoria train station, I found The Duke Of York to be a rather tiered, run-down and altogether, uninspiring place to have drink. I paid a visit after work last Friday evening (30th March) and whilst it obviously suits many, it just didn't quite work for me. With Fosters priced at an extortionate 2.91 (yes, that right, the beer I and many others like to dub kangaroo piss), I have to wonder why anyone bothers. If you can live without the background music, you may as well go to the perfectly adequate Wetherspoon (The Willow Walk) situated close by. Perhaps I am being a little unfair, this certainly is a terrible pub, its just not a very good pub either.
HTM69 - 2 Apr 2007 18:33
Got slowly drunk in here on Saturday night. Very smoky. Bit on the chavvy side actually but not too offensive. Doubt I'll go in again tho. Beer selection was rubbish for a start.
Cleversaz - 18 Oct 2006 14:03
I came here for work drinks on Friday night (18 August) as a couple of lads were leaving our Department. For a Friday night and given the local Civil Servant/plc worker population, it was not too busy and we did not need to wait too long to get a drink. It is not that big, but there is a restaurant upstairs. It was a decent night, though I would not come here any other time bar work drinks, e.g. a Saturday night. It lacked atmosphere, female talent and character. It also seemed pointless having a doorman on one entrance opposite the station, but not anyone on the entrance opposite The Stage Door pub! While the men's toilets were not well maintained and stunk all night. Forget the great H-Files search in this part of the World.
Searching_for_H_Files - 21 Aug 2006 13:35
It is now open again (as of Friday 11 August) - looked fairly empty as i wandered past - but the cheese on the bar was a nice touch !!
WhoFlungDung - 13 Aug 2006 16:06
The Duke has been closed since Friday (4 August) - they are infested with mice so I'm told !!

Watch this space - Squeek Squeek !!

WhoFlungDung - 10 Aug 2006 12:59
This watering hole is a piece of heaven on earth. Good food, the nicest staff in the world and a cool smell.

It's friendly and fun and Mr Lucas (manager) is a real sexy god for the ladies.

Happiest place in Victoria and even better than the Burleigh
bobster - 22 Jun 2006 11:17
A nice pub, worth a visit if you're in the area. If you're planning to go to The Shakespeare around the corner, don't, and come here instead. I was in on a Saturday afternoon before moving on into the evening but there was a nice atmosphere throughout and it wasn't too crowded at that time.
C.B - 11 May 2006 17:21
Absolutely miles better than the nearby Shakespeare (but then again so is a public toilet), decent pub, bit pricey but then that's to be expected in a pub next door to a theatre in London.
CLFINAL2005 - 3 May 2006 09:54
OOOOOOOOOOO the Grand Ol' Duke of York.... well this is what I was singing when I left.

bubbles83 - 1 Apr 2006 11:39
if i were to collapse and die in one of the 'toria pubs i'd probably choose the york... got a bit of everything this one, and can get lively - doormen friday and saturday which takes some doing if you consider victoria is predominantly government and plc company workers
shw500 - 16 Nov 2005 13:25
Nice bar and service but can get crowded.
makavelli - 23 Apr 2005 22:07
A nice clean pub with good beer and friendly bar staff.
lennie384 - 11 Apr 2005 12:10
Best pub in the area that i've been to and far better than the nearby Shakespeare
ddsn - 7 Dec 2004 11:06
This pub has the best fish and chips I have tasted in London. The food and drinks here are excellent.
Frank - 8 Aug 2004 22:05

Evette - 16 Jun 2003 14:51
the service is excellent, good music great atmosphere and the sexiest bar tenders I have ever seen. In particular the one with the mullet.
Jessica Monfries - 26 May 2003 15:06
FANTASTIC PLACE - COOL MUSIC AND REALLY FUN PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR ELLIOTT (DOWNSTAIRS BAR). HE'S SO SWEET AND REALLY DESERVED MY 5 POUND TIP! MAKE SURE YOU GO THERE!
sara - 18 May 2003 16:36
Just a restaurant. Bar is too small and dingy, but the food is excellent upstairs.
Frank Huges - 9 Apr 2003 22:47
A fantastic pub, the pub is lively and the resturant serves great food.
Staff are fantastic as well.
Sergi - 2 Mar 2003 00:03
Excellent food with good prices in the restaurant upstairs -- good service and ambience also. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary there on our recent trip to London. Would definitely go back.
