This is now the GBG listed Hungerford Arms. One harassed member of staff on a busy Saturday afternoon with at least a dozen waiting to get served meant I gave up on this place. Definitely worth walking past.

I think the reason why this doesn't seem to be a place for drinkers is that the bar to the left as you walk in just isn't designed to sit in. It's all just too narrow with slippery, black leather sofas that aren't conducive to comfortable sitting. The 3.9% "Plume Ale" was £3.40 and not too bad; other handpulls were Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Old Speckled Hen. The room to the right is a restaurant which we didn't venture into. MarlingSnallard got this correct - perfectly friendly welcome but a pub to have one in and then move on.

In Hungerford for a soccer match on a Bank Holiday. Slightly disappointed that this establishment seems to be edging towards being a restaurant that sells beer. Quite a few diners in at lunchtime and the food looked good. Only two drinkers inside and another ten in the beer garden, most of whom were visiting Merthyr soccer fans. They had a laptop on a barside table for free Internet access. Barmaids quite attractive and not especially aloof, despite previous reviews to the contrary. I stuck with a pint of Ruddles County for three pounds and ten shillings. Very good pint. They also had Greene King Caritas, not something I'm familiar with. The "landlord's choice" pump wasn't on. Had Stowford Press cider on draught as well. This is a Weston's cider, but more your standard apple drink than a connoisseur's tipple and not in the same potency league as their infamous Old Rosie. Fair enough pub, but I was on a bit of a crawl and had just the one pint.

Nice pub, good food and beer but the service is a bit hit and miss and at lunchtimes it can be a bit slow.

I moved to Hungerford 5 months ago and found the place to be warm and pleasant. However, staff only seem to engage with established local clientele and despite visiting regularly, there is rarely a welcome conversation.
Ate there this evening and staff moved the chair at my table causing me to have to move my table for her while I was eating without so much as an excuse me. No further offers of desert menu or drink re-fills so paid bill and had a drink elsewhere. There was also no "please", "thank you" or "goodbye" when paying/leaving.
Real shame as this could be a really good pub for regulars and visitors alike and the food was actually quite good.

Living locally, we come in here fairly often. We have always received a very warm welcome and enjoy the convivial atmosphere. Ruddles County is very well kept and the wines are varied enough to offer a good choice by the glass.
A short food menu is evidently prepared on site and is always good.
You don't have to be a local to feel welcome - It's a good pub to just walk in to, but beware that it is closed on Sunday evenings.
It was recommended to us, and I would recommend it to others.

It's not often we go into a pub and turn around again without even sampling the beer. Sadly, this is precisely what happened last weekend at The Plume of Feathers, Hungerford. Pleasant enough interior, fair selection of beer, but the 'welcome' was dreadful. Four hungry adults and one hungry child wanting to sample some old fashioned pub grub. We were told we could not sit at a large table because it was reserved....not for another customer....but "in case a larger party of people come in"! We were subsequently told that we could order food but would have to move if the table was required!! The woman at the bar (apparently in charge - although a steward's enquiry is pending) clearly needs to learn about customer service. Unfortunately in these uncertain times, pubs will need to work much harder for our well earned cash. Disappointing.

Visited sporadically over the last 25 years or so and always found it a bit disappointing - especially the food. Summer 2008, however, and I was hugely impressed; beautifully done up and a great menu. Unfortunately, I went down with severe indigestion shortly after my visit - but - to be fair - I don't really think it raeally had anything to do with my pub lunch!

Good beer, good food. Service can be a bit slow when it gets busy at lunchtimes.
