The wife and I had 2 nights in Whitby having had a flying visit here last September.
5 pubs to tick so we start with the one nearest our apartment which was the Granby Hotel.
We come in around 7.30 on a Wednesday night and the pub mainly consists of diners, we didn't eat but the food was certainly popular and looked blinking good.
2 separate rooms with a split bar running between the 2.
4 ales on cask which were Camerons Strongarm, Hobgoblin, Marston's Pedigree and my choice which was Jennings Sneck lifter. A decent pint though the young barman didn't show much interest in serving the drinks...he's phone was more important!
A decent start to my Whitby ticking trip.

Don't be put off by the worn exterior. Called in on Friday afternoon, and sat in the 'downstairs' room (to the left) 4 cask ales Camerons Strongarm, Marstons Pedegree, Jennings Lakeland Bitter, Jenning Snecklifter. JLB was acceptable, but needed a top up. Visited again Sat night and went 'upstairs' uncomfortably warm. Had Pedegree - poor pint this time

Stayed just round the corner from this pub t'other week. Excellent find - a couple of Jennings beers on tap as well as Strongarm.

Smashing pub. Camerons Strongarm and Jennings Sneck Lifter on offer. Well kept beers, excellent.

A decent pub, popular with bed and breakfast holiday people. New landlord has improved it more beer choice, and you can still get a good pint of Camerons strongarm! Food is good and reasonebly priced, for Whitby. Toilets are its weak point, cramped and tiny near the kitchen, but the kitchen looks clean and tidy. Staff friendly and seem happy enough. Recommended. Off the tourist track!

We visited this pub in July 2009 & thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was lovely and the portions huge - very good value. The only negative point was that as a cider drinker, there wasn't much choice. But apart from this, The Granby was a decent pub, with lovely food!

After over a year of not popping in to the Granby, I popped in over the Easter holidays. What a smashing pub this is now. Beer choice was wider, but not vast, but well kept and not massively expensive. Food was delicious and portions were very generous. Went in a few times. Highly recommended.

Great food, good atmosphere, and the beer was served at the right temperature!

The food is said to be very good here and the beer is definitely acceptable.
As a stopoff on the way into or out of town it is worth a visit.

Staff seem inexperienced but are very friendly and helpful despite the crush at the bar. Had a very good roast dinner in the evening which was huge and inexpensive. The beer was in good condition but an unadventurous choice on offer.

I agree that the real ales are served too cold. Very good food and very good value. Hopefully the guy in charge will sort the beer temp out.
|
Cameron's Strongarm and Wychwood Hobgoblin served too cold to taste. Not the best pub in Whitby but needs patronage. Visit it!

Under new management Lager, cider and bitter all below par.
|
A traditional two-bar local pub with reasonable food and three ales on tap - Marstons Pedigree and two guest ales. A bit of a smell of food but perhaps this is to be expected in these post-smoking ban times. Has karaoke on Mondays. The Granby is a dog-friendly pub which is not that common even in dog-liking Whitby.

A nice little pub that edges on being "for locals" but actually you get a mix of tourists in also. Very friendly. A very interesting layout with a central bar split on two levels. Wise to check the bottled beer is cold as I keep getting wrm ones. They also keep up a quaint tradition of handing out free sandwiches form time to time..
