Popped in today for a lunchtime pint - everything fine! Welcoming log fire, welcoming landlady, selection of three cask ales (1 Fullers, 2 local). I chose Handley Best, and was invited to sample it, as there wasn't much left in the cask. It was lovely, and the attention to service shown by the landlady admirable. Other posters have commented on prices - this is prime gastro-pub territory, and I didn't pay over the top for the area. Can't comment on food (not that this is a food site, though many users treat it as such), as I didn't eat here.

Superb. One of the two best places in Dorset to eat. Excllenet menus, food, drinks, service, surroundings. John and Helena

Popped in last autumn. The barman looked at us contemptuously as if to say " you can't afford to come in here" and he was right. This is the most expensive pint I've ever paid for. It was a good pint of Jurasic right enough but 3.40? A bowl of chips would have blown the budget for the week so cycled down to the Drovers at Gussage: much better.

Food as improved dramtically recently, since head chef Paddy took over. Love this place, always assured to have the best meal, with good wine and good beer.

However service is slack and front of house dont seem to know what they are doing half the time.

all in all worth a visit for the food, but nothing else.

I do agree with the points that tootall made, though I couldn't comment on the young south african bloke. We always find that the food is very good despite being expensive and we always go in the pub bit not the restaurant. Since the tall older bloke who used to run the bar has gone, the staff aren't quite as on the ball and the beer is not quite as good. However, overall it's still one of the best foodie/gastro pubs for absolutely miles.

Hmmm, where shall I start? This place used to be fantastic, but since the new owners have taken over it, I am struggling to continue to want to go there... The service has gone downhill, with not very intuitive staff, that all seem to have other agenda's, especially the young south african guy... The food has lost it's edge, which is a shame, because when it was good, it was very good! The pub itself is great, the bar always has a good vibe, and is friendly. They have a bit out the back, called the 'barn restaurant' or something like that, but I wouldn't recommend booking a table out there, as it has no atmosphere whatsoever, (it needs music), and you can hear the conversations of every table! not good for a romantic evening! Choose the bar area instead! We keep going back, hoping that things will change, but we are still waiting!!! Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but it needs to get back to it's usual standard, to warrant the prices... 7/10

Still good food and drink. Was in there 14th of March 09 and the place was packed.

Excellent couple of pints of Ringwood.

I took my cherished other here for Valentine's a couple of years back and found it to be excellent. We were in the shed out back, perhaps it was called The Barn, but I didn't think it was expensive for the quality of the food.

The only trouble in the Barn was everyone within ten feet could hear our intimate conversation, which I suppose is like verbal swinging, but I would have preferred a bit more confidentiality on our night for lovers. The Landlord beer was indeed excellent, nearly as good as that at The Coventry Arms down at Corfe.

Just realised I'm reviewing this as a restaurant, so no rating given.

Great ambience, great food and good beer and wine. Never had a duff time here. My girlfriend did once, on a girly night out earlier this year, when the place was packed and service was slow.

Well used by locals and not-so-locals alike (13 miles away for me)

Parking isn't plentiful, it's off the beaten track, it's expensive - it's a fantastic place to go, so I do, a lot.
