Ma Boyles is another pub I haven't been in for several years. It has closed and re-opened under new ownership in that time. Whilst it now has even more of a bistro feel and there is clearly a focus on food, it was much busier than I remember it last time. 3 ales were on - Weetwood Cheshire Cat & Mad Hatter & Box Steam Piston Broke. The Mad Hatter was ok, but perhaps not the ideal ale for me.

Have walked past several times over the past 6 months and it's always been closed.
I don't think it's closed down - they just have very strange opening hours.

Visited on a Thursday about 5.00. Empty but bar staff friendly. Only one handpull upstairs which tasted pretty poor. Sign up saying 5 or 6 beers downstairs but I just know even if they were down there the bar would not be staffed so whats the point? The downstairs room is tiny so why not put more beers on upstairs for when people walk in the place? Bizzare!

Went in a few weeks ago and paid 1.95 for a pint of Strongbow.
Went in last week and was asked for 2.40 for a pint of Strongbow. I handed over a five pound note and the barmaid said "have you got the right money? I haven't got enough change!"
Strange place! Was showing kids TV programmes with the volume turned down on a widescreen tele!

Called in on a saturday evening. Barmaid was saying that she was going to close it early....pity she didn't do that before we went in. A very average Doombar!!

Visited here last week - wasn't tempted by the ales. In fact, it only looked like they had Doom Bar on, so got a pint of Strongbow instead - served in a dirty glass!!!
Considering it's almost a year since my last visit here - I think I'll give it another year before I return. Somehow, I can't see it improving!

We visited here last Sunday lunchtime. It was quiet with only two other people at the bar. Two real ales were on - Hanby Golden Honey and Sharps Doom Bar. The former was very cloudy and we were offered a Doom Bar instead. The bar area itself was fine. No sign of the aforementioned scallys. Although they did have the football on the big screens.

I think I must have gone here on the same day as happytyskie!
I heard lots of good things about this place but found it to be totally the opposite.
As happytyskie says - (very loud) drunk scallys watching the football, (mothers with prams) and small kids running around. The pub was dirty and in general and didn't enjoy my visit.
In fact I drank my pint as quickly as possible and left as soon as I could. I can't even remember what I had to drink!!

Nice little place hidden away not far from the Liverbirds & many hotels. Helpful staff, guest ale at 1.95 a pint & generous sized, well priced grub. Recommended

Just average: average ale quality, average atmosphere (better in the downstairs bar) and average service.

This pub is in a lovely location near St Nicholas church. Small bar on the ground floor with with food served downstairs. We went in on a Saturday afternoon to find it full of drunk scallys watching football & small kids running round. The floor was filthy & the bar full of stale sticky beer. Very expensive & poor quality beer. Certainly wouldn't be tempted to eat here! Couldn't wait to leave. Won't be back again.

A traditional city centre bar tucked away in a side street and down a staircase. Known for its' food as well as cask beers. Full of businessmen during lunchtime. Well worth visiting.

Ma Boyles is a real discovery. They are currently serving the most exquisite pint of Hanby All Seasons or Hanby Fruit Beer you are likely to taste for many a long while.
Get down there whilst its still on. Their beer puts other pub's offerings completely in the shade, specifically the Black Ship in the Cross Keys is truly vile.
Get to Ma Boyles before they sell out!

Ma Boyles is not only the closest decent restaurant and pub to the Pier Head Isle of Man port but also a good price, good food and good beer establishment. Walking up Chapel St towards Moorfields Station (or just behind James St Station), the restaurant is just over the flat gravestones of St Nicholas's churchyard. I found this pub/restaurnat whilst waiting once for a froce 11 to abate to a force 10 when sailing home to the Isle of Man.
Good good, good beer, good people
