Lovely traditional pub that is worth braving the steep roads of Robin Hood's Bay for as long as you can keep your footing. The main bar is a gorgeous cramped affair decorated with bric-a-brac that will serve you a world class pint of Adnam's Ghost Ship (or at least it did when I visited!) in a convivial atmosphere enhanced by a nice real fire (which to be fair was overkill on a balmy October day when I called in). The other smaller bar is sparsely decorated but has comfortable seating carved directly out of logs and was mercifully a few degrees cooler. The only downside was of all things the gents toilets, which are outside the pub and consisted of a cramped and grotty room with a single urinal and a barely functioning sink. This is however a minor gripe. An excellent place to stop off for a few jars.

Nice night in here. The Copper Dragon Black Gold was exceptional, one the best pints I've had for a long time. Friendly staff and customers. Can't say locals as I'm now a local myself!

Theakstons Old Peculiar was top notch - don't mind paying a bit extra for well kept beer (not that you should have to).

Beer is very expensive, but Old Peculiar was the best pint I've had in a long time. They obviously really know how to look after it.
Nice and quiet when I was in middle of last week. Cosy rooms. Friendly staff, without being too friendly.

just visited. Beer average and expensive. typical tourist trap I suppose. Not unfriendly but not very welcoming either. Would avoid and try the other 2 pubs nearby. The dolphin was cheaper and better beer despite undergoing work. bay hotel was friendlier and ale was good. Food seemed to be going down well though I didnt eat there.

Disappointing. Very flat atmosphere when we went in and the beer wasn't up to much. There's better pubs in Robin Hoods Bay.

Excellent pub. One room unchanged cosy friendly drinkers bar with real fire. Another room off the entrance with electric fire and gents up the road, ladies upstairs. Yes, Old peculiar excellent but should be at 3.50 a pint

Busy, friendly pub with three well looked after beers. Old Peculier particularly good.

For many years, I should say from the mid-seventies until the late eighties at least - there was a notice on the door saying: "No Hikers". So even when not actually hiking, I made a point of NOT visiting on principle. However, I am delighted to see that this is no longer the case (change of ownership I suppose) and when I called in last year I enjoyed a very good lunch before walking back to Whitby along the cliff path.
(Apologies if I've got the wrong pub here ... I'm talking about the white one halfway down the steep slope on the left as you approach the sea. Pretty sure it's the Laurel!)

Excellent pub, friendly landlord, recently visited on a very cold December night welcoming fire

yes it is. like stepping back in time. great pub.
|
Great stuff. Never had the food, but the beer is marvellous. Is this the pub where the gents look is about 50 yards further up the hill?
|
I agree the best Peculier in the world. Sit outside and watch people struggle up the hill with their kids.Great entertainment.

Gorgeous setting, lovely beer but some of the weekenders - solicitors and such from Leeds and Sheffield who own most of the local cottages-can be a real pain in the arse.
